> We had a fantastic experience with New York Plantings Garden Designers. While we didn't have the largest outdoor space to work with, there was a lot of detail in the design and New York Plantings Garden Designers team took a lot of care to make sure the build reflected the specifications. Thank you for delivering us a fantastic outdoor space. Can't wait to enjoy it this summer!

**★★★★★ — 127 East 92 LLC, Sept. 2019**

> Did a great job on short notice whilst taking great care, for a Developer based in Manhattan. Far superior plantings when compared to most New York plant stores at a very competitive price. Todd is very easy to deal with and punctual, his workers are professional and methodical in their installation. Would recommend them to any architect, developer or home owner.

**Comment from New York Plantings Garden Design:**

> Thank you very much for your business and we always look forward to working with you! Find us on newyorkplantings.com and don't forget to water this warm Winter while the irrigation system is shut down.

> New York Plantings Garden Design is one of the most trusted and reliable garden and landscape design company in New York City. I have worked with the owner, Todd Nappi, a very professional and with outstanding knowledge in Asian garden design, landscape design and lighting, as well as irrigation system installation, since 2014. Todd Nappi communicates effectively with his customers making sure that he provides quality work and a great satisfaction.

> Thank you for the kind words, Yenda! It has been a pleasure working with you as well in the design trade.

> I wanted to describe my negative experience of working with Todd Nappi and New York Plantings. Me and my girlfriend, a practicing landscape architect, hired Todd’s firm to install a green roof designed by my girlfriend, on a house I recently purchased in Brooklyn. We found Todd’s firm online. It has a very nice website, regularly updated blog and Todd was very responsive to our initial inquires. When we first met him, he was really friendly, professional and presented us with a good bid, so we decided to hire him. As soon as the 50% deposit was paid ($19k), his behavior changed. First he cancelled a planned weekend trip to a nursery, saying he was busy. Although annoyed, we didn’t complain, because it was a weekend after all. Next problem occurred when Todd’s team came to bring green roof materials. They didn’t secure them properly and on the same day the materials were flying all over our street blown by the wind. As a result, we had police called on us. Todd, when notified, wouldn’t even show up to the site. Then it turned out that contrary to his claims he wasn’t insured properly (he didn’t have workers comp). We didn’t let him work on the job till he would get proper insurance. Todd said it would take him a few days to get the policy but weeks later, and countless excuses later, it started seeming to us as he was deceiving us. So we demanded delivery of rest of the pre-purchased materials (soil) and were going to cancel the job. Todd kept telling my girlfriend he was too busy to deliver the soil and that he was working on scheduling a truck. According to our calculations, confirmed by multiple conversations with material suppliers, and generously accounting for the little delivery labor he did, we think NY Plantings still owes us $7k. Todd claims that his firm owes us nothing and justified it with prices much higher than his bid and completely outside the range quoted to us by suppliers. When we asked him to provide receipts he stopped responding to our calls and emails. It has been almost two months since we have heard from him, despite our repeated attempts to communicate with him.
>
> Working with Todd has been the worst professional experience I’ve ever had, and this review does not come close to reflecting how bad this experience was. As I said, he has a nice website and is online savvy. Truth is we were extremely patient with him and willing to accommodate him. Their business street address is a post office, so good luck finding Todd if you need to see him in person. Contrary to what he told us first, he later said he lives somewhere in PA. Please for your own sake do not work with Todd Nappi’s firm. I believe people like him should not be allowed to practice this profession in New York City.

> Dear Ms. Janet,
> Hello, and thank you for your comments and the compliments. We do post our daily work online since this is the work we specialize in...all day, everyday, year round.
> The work that we love and it comes through in our Landscape designs and, with hardscapes and gardens. Please feel free to contact u directly and ask or a manager so that we may try to resolve any issues you may be experiencing. I do not see any activity from someone matching your name since 2013 but perhaps you recently worked with us under a different name. Would you happen to have an image of the work you describe so that we may discuss more in depth?
> Have a great day and God Bless!

> Houzz recommends that "reviews are answered" we can try. More to let our long time, current and new clients know that all is well here with us at NewYorkPlantings. We are not going anywhere and will be doing the work we love for years to come.
>
> We are more concerned with our family and friends, especially our children who may read this. This has nothing to do with our quality of work or NY Plantings outdoor space improvement abilities.
> This "Houzz.com" is a great website and one of our favorite but what Houzz allows to be posted is disturbing.
>
> In attempt to avoid this sort of issue We now make make sure that throughout the entire work process we check in and ask that the client is happy, if we can improve anything and make sure that we will have a good referral when the work is completed.
>
> 3 (three) years ago (approx) records show that this client's girlfriend did contact us and eventually did receive a soil delivery from us and a van full of materials but did not work with us in any other way. There was a contract that was broken solely by the client.
> The soil delivery was very large at nearly 40,000 Lbs and we were forced to store the product for months since the "landscape architect" managing the project insisted upon ordering much too early with no place to accept delivery of 14 pallets of soil. We took this soil to our yard in PA, since our NYC location (jan...a po box is not an office, perhaps in your country:)) this was as courtesy, but not free of charge.
>
> I think Emily (the " practicing architect girlfriend" in the opening statement, in her 20's with no experience whatsoever in managing a large landscape project) may have "mal- practiced" not "practiced" and now understands the soil is delivered and then 'goes in' later. Not first. Later. In fact, if the soil hadnt been ordered too early, the entire project may have gone well. That Winter was the worst on record for several years and delivery was made very difficult. We also require lead time for this.
> I didnt want to order the soil...the "girlfriend" did. I even suggested against it. Now, with 20 years experience I would not bring a tractor trailer load of soil to a jobsite with nowhere to keep it, especially before any other work was started.
> The deposit funds were depleted in the price of the soil, the redundant transportation, truck rentals, machine hiring, loading/unloading crews, redundant site meetings, consult, assistants, helpers, drivers, workers, emails, phone calls, sketches, materials research, ordering pickup/delivery and other cost items related directly or indirectly to the project.

> I usually don't write reviews but want to make sure all prospective clients are warned. The owner is a great sales guy but the client service stops after the 50% deposit is made. I would have saved myself a lot of headache and money if I had properly researched this company and urge others to learn from my mistake.

**Comment from New York Plantings Garden Design:**

> Dear mbr233.
> Thank you for your purchase and please feel free to give us a call directly to resolve any customer service issues. You will indeed see that we have made great improvements with more understanding and clear communication.
>
> This is the work I personally love to do and it is well known to any client that I am enthusiastic regarding the improvement of outdoor spaces.
>
> You have a very nice outdoor space as a garden terrace with a freshly sanded IPE deck and large modular built in IPE planter. A drip irrigation system should help to keep the plantings healthy and established.
> Please accept our (my) apologies for not providing more personalized and attentive service. If we truly care to improve and learn from our experiences then this is the best we can do moving forward.
> I hope that you did see an improvement to your garden terrace and view from indoors looking out.
> Sincerely,

> I hired this company for my landscape design and roof top renovation. All the guys of this company are very cooperative and experienced. They also did the irrigation part for my gardening. I am thinking to hire them again for my indoor plantings.

> I hired New York Plantings to install custom planter boxes and LED lighting for my outdoor garden, they were prompt and professional; I'm very satisfied with the outcome and would suggest their services again.
>
> At night I can walk through my garden and smoke a nice cigar, the lights are bright enough to walk confidently yet they do not distort the local skyline; I'm really proud of the outcome.

> NY Plantings re-built a rooftop terrace with custom planters, added plantings, and provided irrigation and lighting. Everything turned out beautifully. The deck looks great and there is a good mix of plants (trees, shrubs, flowers). It is all very tasteful and Todd paid attention to my description of what I wanted / did not want. Todd and his crew were professional and friendly. The work was completed on time and at a competitive price.
>
> I would certainly recommend NY Plantings and would re-hire them for future work.

**Comment from New York Plantings Garden Design:**

> Dear Eric, thanks so much for the good words. Your project was indeed enjoyable and rewarding. The IPE custom built deck and planter boxes should last for decades. The Drip irrigation system will also be a great help to support your Rooftop Garden trees and shrubs.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Plant pot** *(in Photo Questions)*

I would like to know how the wooden plant pot is isolated please? Thank you

A: Hi! these planters were first built from Marine grade plywood and stainless fasteners. Then clad with IPE wood.
Options include different liners however even with no liner the planters will last for decades.
This particular NYC hardscape is not built by us but we have been maintaining the garden, lighting, irrigation and improving the space consistently for several years.
This type of work is within our scope of services.
Thank you for your question!

**Q: TREES** *(in Photo Questions)*

what kind of trees?
thanks

A: Hi these are "American Hornbeam" used for the columnar growth habit,. Columnar describes a growth habit more compact and straight like a column. Theres pyramidal, spreading, irregular round,, others.
Columnar trees look great lining a path in a formal landscape, don't take up as much space as other trees too,. There are other varieties of columnar trees such as the popular "upright English oak" or Fagus verticulata.
thanks for the question.
Todd Nappi

**Q: Front yard idea** *(in Photo Questions)*

What kind of plant is it that is growing on the rocks?

A: Hi, Smith, Thanks for the question and sorry for the late reply. The green carpet like plants are both moss and spots of sedum. I dont expect the sedum to do well here and the moss will likely take over completely. You can buy "Moss Rocks" from professional nurseries that are actually farmed and will look great in your shady, moist garden areas. The moss can grow naturally but in this case we bought and planted heavily to establish effect. This is a great shady spot with dappled sunlight. I have found moss to grow well in dappled sunlight vs. shade only. The areas need to be moist, but not overly wet. We used one of our specialties, drip irrigation line with built in drip emitters to keep the areas moist from underneath. Moss can be lifted fairly easily and comes up like a tupee' when disturbed too often. It is tough and an be walked on without too much worry.
If you already see moss growing naturally in the area you want to plant it, then you should have excellent results.

**Q: West facing hot front yard with 2large mature lHackberry trees. Hot shade and hot west sun. Ideas for xeriscap** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Deep summer shade but very hot west afternoon sun. Sidewalk runs along front yard with south driveway. Pueblo, co zone 5 maybe stretch to zone 6. Can get to 100 + in depth of summer.

A: OH! I would love to get my hands on this! A hearty, softening landscape with little lawn if any, still utilizing grasses, drip irrigation with plantings that dont require much maintenance, still unique and special with year round color and interest. The goal to make the landscape look established for decades by using some mature specimens as the main plantings.
Good luck with this, I'm sure it will be beautiful.
