> Felipe's have done 3 kitchens for us. We have been extremely satisfied. They go over and beyond to make it perfect.

**★★★★★ — Joseph Guagenti, July 2018**

> Going through a Kitchen & Bath renovation can be very stressful, but Filipe and his team were there with us every step of the way.
>
> From the first day my wife and I stepped into his showroom and sat down with Paola who spent hours with us designing our kitchen and main bathroom, to picking out the color scheme and style that we were looking for, Paola’s expertise and skills far exceeded our expectations.
>
> Filipe and his team of craftsmen were on the jobsite everyday easing any concerns we had and bringing our dream kitchen & bath to reality. They addressed issues that unexpectedly came up and put our fears to rest. This is a reflection, in my opinion, to the many years’ experience they have in the business and the pride they have in their workmanship.
>
> His prices are reasonable for the quality of work he delivers and I would recommend him in a heartbeat for any renovation that you may have.

**★★★★★ — Theresa Malavarca, July 2017**

> Filipe made everything so easy from the beginning!! He personally came and took measurements right away, requested my Kitchen "Wish List", came up with a few designs in a couple days and we were ready to make decisions right away. Selected materials right in the show room. After demo, Kitchen cabinets & countertop installed in ONE week!! No days off in between. Exquisite craftsmanship, attention to detail and customer service. Always answers every question and solves every problem, no questions asked. Supplied sink with grill & extra moldings in no time. Couldn't be happier. WOULD DEFINITELY RECCOMMEND to any friend. Thank you Fil & Paola! 4 weeks from demo to install was a DREAM!

**★★★★★ — Leslie Schneider, Dec. 2016**

> Filipe and his team did an outstanding job! They helped us design our kitchens and bathrooms, and then guided us in selecting beautiful and practical tiles, fixtures, countertops and cabinets. His prices for fair and reasonable, and he helped us pick beautiful things that were within our budget. The workmanship was top notch. When there were some minor problems well after the job was completed (for example, a cabinet door not aligned), Filipe came back promptly and fixed everything perfectly.

**★★★★★ — Valerie Mazur, Dec. 2016**

> I would highly recommend Filipe Custom Woodwork, they were very professional, very courteous always on time, cleaned up after themselves at the end of the day, The work was to perfection right down to every detail, they were very helpful with unique ideas! I would hire them again, I absolutely love my Kitchen!

**★★★★★ — Denise Bailey, Nov. 2016**

> Filipe and his team have done several projects for us, from crown moulding and painting to renovating two large scale fireplace design projects. The first project which involved demolishing an 80's white painted brick fireplace and replacing with a tudor style stone fireplace and two story white oak stained mantle. It is the centerpiece of our house and we are complimented by everyone who sees it. Years later when we needed to add floor to ceiling bookcases and to design a second fireplace overmantel we of course called Filipe Custom Woodwork. Filipe's team is professional, meticulous with details and leave the job site each day as clean as they found it. Highly recommended!

> Filipe Custom Woodworking provided everything they said they would. They were knowledgeable and professional. Designer Paola was a tremendous asset. Renovating a kitchen is a very expensive project and I was nervous about choosing all the right products and design. She walked me through the entire design process, from the cabinets, to the floor and backsplash as well as the appliances. I am thrilled with the results. The installers did a fabulous job.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Does Helmsley quartz counter top go with kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi I am remodeling our kitchen and have picked out the floor cabinets and countertop but I am having second thoughts on the countertop. Can you tell me if these colors will go together OK? The floor is from Lowe’s it is ceramic tile, Piedmont blanco. .cabinets are kraftmaid cottage color. Quartz is Helmsley.

A: They look great!!

**Q: Crazy to apply for mortgages / house hunt during Covid-19?** *(in Buying and Selling Homes)*

First off: I'm at high risk so would be doing all of this work online, nothing in person at all for now. I take social distancing extremely seriously.
My husband and I have had a long term plan to move to NYC and have become more so eager over the last few months. We are in an incredibly lucky financial situation in that we can easily afford a small condo/co-op and have never had a problem getting mortgages from the bank that our family has used for generations.
I'm thinking about getting pre-approved for a mortgage and talking to some realtors on the phone so that when it seems safe to physically condo/co-op hunt we are ready to do so. We currently own a home that we would want to sell too, however, buying a new place in NYC is not contingent on selling our current home immediately.
Should we just put all of our plans on hold while we see over the next 6-months how the market unfolds? Or is there no harm in just taking steps to move ahead?
We are in our mid to late 40s, have no kids, and flexible jobs. We have both suffered a lot of extremely serious health crises, one very recently, which is admittedly fueling our carpe diem mentality. We have plenty of money for retirement to afford to make some risky financial decisions, but we don't want to be entirely crazy or flat out stupid!
Please advise.

A: Doesn't hurt to have Pre-Aprroval and look online but I would not plan to come for at least the next two months. They shut down the non-essential businesses and here in NJ we expect to be closed by the afternoon since we are close and usually NJ follows what NY does.
Honestly we really don't know how this is going to turn out for all of us financially. I would wait honestly.
NY will always be there, your health matters much more especially since you are high risk.
Hold off. It's a bit crazy here.
At least wait until we are further in terms of the testing etc. They are just getting them up and running as of this week.

**Q: I need help with backsplash color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are nearing the end of our entire kitchen reno. We had picked out a classic blue subway tile in the early plans. I am feeling hesitant now that the time is here. We have pure white shaker cabinets, a Calacatta gold quartz countertop and Smartcore Carrolton Walnut luxury vinyl plank flooring. My DH is still set on the darker blue. I am leaning towards the lighter blue. He thinks the light blue will make it look like a bathroom. I am afraid the darker tile is too dark. Thoughts? By the way, all of you on Houzz helped us get through so many situations through this process by reading all of the advice on here.

We love everything about our kitchen so far.

A: I am voting for the dark blue.

**Q: What to do with awkward corner in open concept kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I hate my weird open concept layout downstairs. There isn't actually enough room to put a table there - barely enough room for a 2 seater, and definitely not enough for a 4 seater. Both the pantry door and door to outside open into this area. It looks way too crowded and I can't open the pantry if I put a table there, but it looks weirdly empty if I have nothing there. I have kind of "created" a dining area in the other main area, so it feels kind of crowded in the living room and then kind of empty there. Any ideas for something to either put on the wall or something narrow in width to put on the floor so that the pantry still opens?

A: You can add shelving for display and storage..

**Q: Help my kitchen not look stupid!!** *(in Remodeling)*

So right now my countertop ends, then there is a window to the corner. The dining area is in this corner. we are getting new countertops and I can't help but think we could extend the countertop under the window, and put either cabinets underneath or leave it open as a great spot for homework or breakfast. I just can't decide if that makes the dining space too awkward? I had a big flat board I put in the space to show what I mean for the pictures. Please forgive the mess we are rearranging.

A: Agree with Kristin. I would add the storage. The window is big enough to still provide a great deal of natural lighting.
Homework etc can be done at the kitchen table. The countertop is a nice area for meal prep, entertaining, buffet use etc. The extra storage will help you keep the counter clear with minimal clutter. IMO

**Q: Opportunity for Change...Help Me Choose a New Hood PLEASE HELP ME** *(in Design Dilemma)*

So the 42" stainless steel hood I have sitting in my garage cannot be used in my kitchen (long story and late notice by kitchen designer. I know how the opportunity to make a change. You can see the space I have and the colors I have chosen. The space between the windows is 69". The cooktop is 36".

When I started the planning process, I definitely wanted a wood hood but the cost of the one that matched my cabinets was way too expensive. So I switched to stainless steel. Since I now have to shop for a new hood (and quickly order one), I am looking at all options including buying a hood kit and insert.

Here is the space I have:

And here is a closer shot of my island cabinet color:

Please give me your insights:

Should I stick with 42" or go to 36"?
If I switch to my first choice (wood), what shape do you like with my finishes?
What type of finish would you use? Shiplap? Drywall? Barn wood? Etc?

I need to decide with 24 hours so your quick feedback would be appreciated.

A: I agree with
Design Interior South
Flo Mangan
In my opinion, the stainless will break up all of the wood and will create a beautiful focal point in that area.
I would also go with the larger hood.
