> Joyce helped me do all of the interior design work for my first home. I am a millennial, and I was on a budget. Joyce understood that and helped me find great deals. She also taught me how to paint my furniture to make it look brand new and do DIY projects. She went above and beyond in every way. **Q: Can't decide on flooring!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I bought  a 100 year old row house in Pittsburgh.  I've painted the walls gray and I'm exposing all the old brick fireplaces. help me choose a flooring color.

A: I would have a floor refinisher come give you an opinion on saving those floors.  Nothing you buy new will have the patina you get with an old floor.  That wood is an asset.  Love the exposed brick.

**Q: Really Boring Bathroom!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Can you help? What would you do with this bathroom? I've tossed the idea of painting and doing a board and batten wall, or maybe staining the vanity? Unfortunately a big upgrade isn't really an option at this point.

A: Nice lighting.  You need to punch up the walls.  If this is a powder room, a quick fix is a bold color on the walls.  Needs to be in the middle to lower third of a paint strip.  Pick a color you love, unless this is connected to a bedroom it can stand on its own.  I would also paint the mirror frame in a metallic to coordinate with the light fixture or the trim color.  If you have a taller chest, change it out for the wicker OR add a wall mounted shelf above.  Your art/wall decs are just to small.  Creative, inexpensive art suggestions...frame calendar art.  Make your own art by taking pictures of plants, architecture in your area, public fountains, etc.  Large pattern fabrics also make great art.  Visit thrift stores and pick up cheap frames, then paint them all the same color. Hope this helps.

**Q: Need help with kitchen counter and backsplash** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What color quartz counter is best with dominate grain of golden oak cabinets? Help?

A: You've got a lot of brown with the cabinets and floor tile.  Safe would be a solid off white;  subtle option Silestone Pulsar has a bit of the cabinet color included; Silestone Blue Sahara or Olive Green would add a touch of color;  Starlight (black)  would be dramatic.  I would recommend you do a coordinating backsplash rather than the quartz to match.

**Q: Family Room Fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)*

First time seeking advice on Houzz...please help.  Struggling to find something to compliment our large stone fireplace in our family room.  Room has lovely old timbers, stonewall on the opposite side of fireplace, lovely windows, etc...plus baby toys scattered around more often than we'd like.  We like the faux animal heads we've seen a lot lately, but think our current design might be too much "hunting lodge".  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated to compliment rustic luxury...not sure how else to describe what we are going for.  Thanks a lot.

A: Sorry, I was interrupted with a call.  Agree with JGrossman about light.  I also agree that the tv could be better placed, that is usually dictated by where the connection was installed.  You need to use larger, statement accessories in this space.  Small items get lost.  Resin fossils, old pieces of tools, building parts, framed articles.  You also need to add texture, maybe a wicker or rattan chest to house baby toys, if you are near a Hobby Lobby, they typically have large scale vases in twig or bamboo that are great with a dried grass or branch.   I think the secret to this room is a few thoughtful, well placed pieces.

**Q: Exterior paint color, soffits same color as trim/facia or siding** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are painting our 1920s house and the painter suggested we paint soffit the same color as the siding? This seems strange, I thought you should do soffits same color as trim?! Is he trying to save on labor? FYI, was thinking on doing main house a slate blue and trim/ facia white ...black door...any other suggestions?

A: @sawyer4444, the brass is a kick plate.  The purpose is to take the bumps and scuff marks and save your door finish.  They are usually attached with small screws and can easily be removed.  It will leave small wholes, but they can be filled with a paintable wood putty/filler (I have had great success with Zars, available at paint stores).  I left the paint colors out of my first post, so I will give them to you now, these are all Benjamin Moore Colors.  Siding 1541/London Fog; Trim PM-19/Dove White;  Door should be a deep, rich color...dark russet; rich navy or deep blue green.  This is a neutral palette, the door is your place to make your statement in a color you love.  Just make sure it is saturated and in the lower part of a paint strip.
