Cambium Construction is a residential design build team based in Middlebury, Vermont. We can build from your architect produced plans or design from your own ideas and produce a product that meets your needs and design aesthetic.

Chris Stackhouse -President of Cambium Construction has been in the building business for 40 years. In the early years of Chris’s building career he worked for several respected construction firms, but found that being self employed was much more fulfilling.
Designing and Building comes naturally for Chris and seems to be in his blood, as he comes from a long line of family architects, artists and builders. He is a master carpenter, artist, drafts person, energy conservationist as well as historic preservationist. Chris recognizes that a home is probably the largest and most important investment a person can make. He wants to insure that every project which he has involvement in is not only built to the clients design aesthetic, but also is practical and suits their personal lifestyle. Chris also believes that any project whether it is new construction or a renovation can be and should be energy efficient and built from high quality, low-maintenance materials. Our motto “Building quality for life” kind of says it all.

To date we have built or renovated 8 high performance homes. One of our highest performance homes has achieved an ACH 1.2 and HERS score of 40. We hope to find a customer who wishes to work together on a passive or net zero home.

> Over the course of the past 40 years, I have built or renovated 4 homes in Addison County. While there are many, quality builders in the area, my most recent experience renovating a condominium in Middlebury was, by far, the best. Cambium Construction, owned by Chris and Jill Stackhouse, was recommended again and again as I began my search for the right contractor. They did not disappoint!
>
> From the very start in February of this year, Chris and Jill hit the ground running with enthusiasm and skill. I told them of my hope of creating a more open, light-filled first floor. Working together, they designed just that. Walls came down, the dark kitchen was gutted, redesigned and masterfully completed, the bathroom was updated, new hardwood floors and lighting were installed. In addition, Chris and Jill coordinated efforts with Efficiency Vermont to maximize energy efficiency.
>
> Everyone who entered my condo over the course of the renovation was polite and hard-working. Even with the arrival of Covid 19, as challenges presented themselves, Chris and Jill were on top of the issues and were in constant communication. I couldn't be happier with the end result. I recommend them to you highly!

> Chris and Jill Stackhouse’s Cambium Construction Company deserves kudos, rave reviews and my highest recommendation. This past winter they renovated our kitchen. Chris and Jill met with us several times to discuss the work we wanted done. Chris then did meticulous plans for our approval and gave us an estimate. They offered excellent advice on where to purchase appliances and made terrific suggestions on cabinetry and lighting . Jill went with me and gave invaluable help in choosing counter-top materials and tile. EVERYONE , from the two carpenters/ painters who worked in our house almost every day, to electricians, to plumbers, to cabinet maker, to tiler did excellent work, arrived on time and cleaned up after themselves. The cost of the project matched the estimate and our beautiful kitchen was finished in a timely manner that matched that estimate as well. Finally, I must add that at the beginning of the project my husband became seriously ill; Jill and Chris were thoughtful, kind and compassionate, going above and beyond what they were hired to do.

**★★★★★ — Lucy, April 2019**

> We recently hired Cambium Construction to redo our kitchen and master bathroom and are extremely happy with the professionalism, quality, and appearance of the completed job. We have had two other construction firms complete projects on our house; the project by Cambium Construction was by far the most professional and least stressful, despite causing the most impact on our daily lives. Cambium gave us an estimated cost for the project which ended up being accurate to less than 1%. Throughout the job the owner and his wife, Chris and Jill Stackhouse, were in touch with us on nearly a daily basis and kept us up to date on progress and what to expect in the coming day and week. The subs they hired were all professional at the highest level in terms of craftsmanship, attention to detail and willingness to listen and explain what they were doing. On top of that they were friendly, thoughtful folks. When the inevitable snags in the project happened, the situation and a solution were presented to us promptly. We requested a couple of changes during the project (different vanity, different paint color) and these requests were accepted with no questions asked - except to be sure they understood what we wanted. We are glad the project is completed but we are sorry to have lost daily touch with these fine folks. We will definitely use their company again when we need more work.

> The remodeling of our two bathrooms was seamless and perfectly executed. The project progressed smoothly, and both Chris and Jill never failed to mention a detail or two of some bathroom feature that I had not considered and that needed tweaking. They planned every step of the remodel meticulously (i.e. drawing of the shower wall tiling). I never had to worry! We were also very impressed with the contractors who worked for Cambium, the plumbers, elctricians, carpenter, and the tiler.
> Both bathrooms are beautiful!

**★★★★★ — Marny Lichtenstein, Feb. 2018**

> On the advice of several neighbors we chose this company for an extensive renovation of our newly-purchased condo. We had never participated in a project this large and were so relieved to find people who could help us plan and understand the process from start to finish. Both Chris and Jill are highly competent professionals who listened to discover what we wanted (we weren't even sure) and turned the ideas into an achievable design concept. Throughout the process they were thoughtful, supportive, flexible and open about decisions and costs. If a problem arose it was solved; if we had a question it was immediately addressed; if we weren't sure how to choose they always gave us options and a professional opinion of the best choice. They are both hands-on, detail oriented and endlessly patient.
> The people they choose to work with are a reflection of their professional approach as the various crew members showed the same attention to detail and work ethic. We were living in the condo as the work was being done and always had questions and comments which were answered with patience and good information. They were also just fun to be around. After four months of work we felt lucky to have been able to get to know such skilled and friendly people.
> The work has been completed to our enormous satisfaction and we know that if a problem ever arises Chris and Jill will be there to help. This has been an exceptional experience.

**★★★★★ — Rich & Artley Wolfson, Nov. 2016**

> Cambium renovated our kitchen and three bathrooms, moved our laundry from first to second floor, re-designed our entryway, and strengthened floor supports under the kitchen. Chris is immensely creative when it comes to overall design as well as to details. He is a gentle, thoughtful listener, offering excellent suggestions and helpful perspectives during project planning. Our project involved lots of carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, tiling, drywall, and painting. Chris and office manager Jill have good relations with their subcontractors, which helped the work go smoothly. Chris’s crew were thoughtful, considerate, and efficient. In the end the project finished ahead of schedule and under budget. We’re very pleased!

**★★★★★ — Judith Fisher, Nov. 2016**

> My dream bathroom is now a reality, and it is perfect! There is not one thing that I would change. Cambium construction was wonderful to work with, reliable, on time, and with the highest quality workmanship. Their visualization for my somewhat small room was wonderful, I really didn't think it could turn out as well as it did. It looks twice as big!

**★★★★★ — Vickie Rinehart, June 2016**

> When we first found this condo, we realized it had significant potential, but we knew it would require magicians to bring it to its full potential. It required so much rehabilitation, incredible creative rebuilding, and unbiased thinking outside of the box to get it where it needed to be that we walked away twice not knowing where to turn.
>
> And then we found Chris and Jill Stackhouse! The rest is history. We have survived many construction projects in the past, each with its own set of horrors. But this experience was a joy from start to finish. Chris and Jill were always immediately available by phone or email to offer their cheerful support or innovative suggestions. The words, "we can't do that" simply weren't part of their vocabulary. If we wanted it, they found a way to make it happen. Their attention to detail was impeccable. They started on time and ended on time and all within budget. Their subs became part of the family - a joy to work with. All involved in the project were masters of their craft. They all demonstrated pride in their work creating a phenomenal end result.
>
> The condo required a total rebuild and we are now the proud owners of an extremely high end quality custom home that surpasses our wildest imaginations. If you want perfection, stress free construction, and to end up with a job done more than right, look no further than Cambium Construction.
> .

> Cabium's crew replaced a sliding glass door and built new outdoor steps for us. They are very to exacting, professional, dependable, and courteous. I trust Chris, Pat and the rest of the crew. No detail is too small-they want to make the customer happy by doing things the right way.

**★★★★★ — nancyewen, March 2016**

> We will miss seeing Chris and Jill frequently at our front door now that our 25 year old condo remodel is beautifully finished! Their team was professional, timely, pleasant and creative. The project evolved as our vision grew! Whenever new ideas popped up, both of them were actively listening and responded with excellent suggestions, solutions and follow through. Our email exchanges kept the project moving forward and us up to date on when certain issues had to be discussed. Cambium also took a thorough look at the inner workings not just the visible aspects of the project. They gave us some excellent advice on insulation, heating, cooling etc that we would not have thought through. Very pleased they had done their homework! Billing and budgets were well spelled out. We went well over budget, they did not!!!!! No bad surprises! Would happily use Cambium Construction again and highly recommend them!!!

> How many people regret the end of a construction project? That is how we felt when Chris and Jill Stackhouse moved on to their next job. What a pleasure it was working with then and their team! They insisted upon high quality work from everyone connected to our extensive renovation, listened to all the parties involved ,especially us the clients, the architect, the subs, and always brought a positive attitude to whatever challenges we faced.. We can't recommend this firm highly enough!

  - Description: This home was built in the 50's. The interior walls were cinder blocks with plaster. The so called insulation was simply an air gap between the interior block walls and the exterior brick walls. The original owners owned a local oil company...need I say more. The current owners were totally on board with bringing the house up to current energy standards and then some. Insulated and re-framed this beautiful "forever home" was the result of a close collaboration with the client who knew what they…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Brand and paint colour name** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could you please tell me the brand bd colour name of the paint used in this entryway?

A: It will seem like its dark when it first goes on. The room featured on houzz has lots of windows and it was a sunny morning when that picture was taken. I would suggest you get a sample can. But we also have used it in low light situations as well and it always looks great. Colour is all about the light.

**Q: Bathroom taps** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where did you source theses from? They're beautiful!

A: Oh boy that was many projects ago. I really don't remember would have to a lot of digging. I will see if I can find our tomorrow. Have to dig files out of the barn.

**Q: Apologies-** *(in Photo Questions)*

I overlooked that they are Western Red Cedar from Ecoshel, seeing that detail just now. However, please provide stain color if you have a moment, thank you!

A: We are away at the moment but I think the stain was called Cape Cod. The stain really soaks into the shingles so not a lot of color remians on the surface.

**Q: what color and brand are the roof shingles?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi..the roof shingles are are IKO Harvard Slate. These have been on the roof for 12 years. They are true asphalt shingles which I don't believe are made anymore. I think most shingles are fiberglass.
