> Mary was amazing to work with. I'm in the interior design business but was struggling with my exterior colors. She was so well versed in colors and asked all the right questions to make it easy. I showed her an inspo picture and she was able to take all the things I loved about it and applied it to my new home. I would recommend her to anyone and I will!

**★★★★★ — Craig Ligman, June 2025**

> I didn’t know where to begin in finding someone to help me pick paint colors for my walls and to blend with my decor. Thank goodness when I was doing my search I found Mary. She helped with my choices for colors that compliments my home and what I want my home to feel like for me and my family and friends . She made it so much easier! Thank you Mary!

> My husband and I were really struggling to select a white color for our living room and kitchen. Like many, we have dark and light areas in those rooms. Mary was terrific in helping us select the right color of white for our home. Mary talked through the various light aspects and tones of the colors for our rooms and clearly understood our overall design. She is professional, patient and detailed which made the selection process easy. We are so pleased with the result and highly recommend Kaleidoscope Color Consulting.

> I recently hired Mary to assist with paint colors. She is extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. Mary offered many suggestions that were truly appreciated. I will recommend Mary to my family and friends. Why waste money trying to figure it out yourself. It is well worth the expense.

**★★★★★ — Maggie, Aug. 2023**

> Mary is terrific (and then some)! I was facing a move to a much smaller home and knew I needed assistance in making things work. Not only did Mary create a stunning living room, bedroom, and bath that have elicited more compliments than I can count. In addition, my new home reflects precisely what I would have chosen for myself if I had Mary’s skill and vision.
> I found myself asking how Mary was able to bring all this about. In my view, a number of factors were at play above and beyond her formidable designing talents – namely, her ability to ask incisive questions that elicited what I liked (and what I didn’t); her gift for listening; her imagination and intuitiveness; her resourcefulness; and her diligence.
> Working with Mary was a great experience. She is the consummate professional, someone who returns calls and emails promptly and does what she says she will do when she tells you she will do it. She is also a fine human being with a lovely sense of humor. The whole thing was FUN!

**★★★★★ — HU-217994458, April 2023**

> In 2021-2022, I was able to start some long-needed home maintenance and improvements, including full interior painting, window coverings, flooring, etc. I confess I was nearly paralyzed about what colors to use throughout the house. Ever since I moved in, it had been a single color beige-off-white in every room. I really wanted to do something to spark it up, but my tastes are very conservative. From previous experience, I knew I would probably make some wrong choices and be disappointed in the outcome if I did it myself. A friend recommended Mary to me and I am delighted by the way things turned out. She was very attentive to my tastes and the limits of my “comfort zone.” She helped me pick a palette of compatible colors that provides variety throughout the house. The old carpet had already been removed and new floors laid in the living areas, kitchen, and baths. Even though I hired her to help with paint colors, she also helped me select some fabulous window coverings for the whole house. They are beautiful “woven grass” Roman shades and really tie the look of the whole house together. Some of the blinds are translucent and some are room darkening. I also purchased a large rug for the living room that she recommended. She made the whole process smooth and stress free. She is extremely flexible in helping the customer find what they like, without imposing her own tastes on the project. I would highly recommend her services.

**Comment from Kaleidoscope Color Consulting:**

> Lisa,
> Thank you for your lovely review.
> I know that the 1st step to starting a project can be the hardest. It was a true pleasure working with you. Nothing pleases me more than helping you achieve a home where you can finally feel comfortable in and proud of.

> I had no idea what I was doing until I met Mary. I envisioned what I wanted in my family and living room. I like the coastal feel. I met Mary randomly and took her offer to help me. Thank goodness! She truly knows her stuff. She is reasonable, honest, patient, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend her consulting services. I recently used her assistance with my kitchen remodel. She consulted me on color tiles, cabinet colors, and countertops. I get compliments from guests all the time. Ask her to show you pictures since we took plenty.

**Comment from Kaleidoscope Color Consulting:**

> Jeanette...thank you for sharing your thoughts about the experiences of working with me on your projects. I am so happy that you and your family are enjoying your family room and the kitchen too!
> Random meetings are serendipitus and I am grateful we met and work together...Now I need to get to work posting pictures :)
> I'm wishing you a brightly colored day...Mary

> What a terrific experience I had with Kaleidoscope Color Consulting's Mary Nolte as my design consultant! A good listener and a talented designer, Mary offered ideas and coordinated my redesign of three rooms. I'm thrilled with the color combinations that are so well-coordianted of the draperies, carpet, furniture, and wall paint. Mary listened to my ideas and vision and explained how to pull it altogether. As I wanted to be very involved, Mary took me to showrooms to see rugs and drapes. She showed me how to make sure my choices worked together. I am delighted with the final result and would recommend Mary Nolte to everyone who is looking for a design consultant on Long Island.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Remodel** *(in Photo Questions)*

What color on the wall to the right of bedroom

A: Laura,
Thank you for your message.
All the walls are the same color - Benjamin Moore HC-173 Edgecomb Gray. It is not a truly a gary, it is a warm gray meaning it is taupe or some call greige. I feel it is very versetile where people want the current gray trend but with some warmth and to coordinate with existing, pre gray trend, furnishings.
This job was a gut job and Edgecomb Gray with the pale blue ceilings were perfect selections for this Montauk ocean vacation getaway.
Wishing you a brightly colored day,
Mary

**Q: Buying a House - should I paint the yellow interior, or leave it?** *(in Paint)*

The house is basically a flip so the paint is new. Yellow was not top of mind for me and I had no doubt I was going to change it, but my mom likes the yellow color.

What is the consensus?

A: Congratulations on your new home.
When you are moving into a new home you need to list your priorities.

Do you have many more expenses with limited funds? (If paint is in good condition, you don't hate it & you have other large expenses, wait to paint)
Do you have furniture that coordinates with the yellow? (if not, wait until you select your furnishings then paint the best color to suit the new decor...Pick paint color LAST)
Can you tolerate the yellow for a while? If you hate it, the answer is to paint it.
It only matters what you and fellow owners like. My advice is to listen to opinions (everyone has one) but don't ask for them...it causes second guessing and stress.

Good luck & happiness in your new home.
Wishing you a brightly colored day,
Mary Nolte

**Q: Drapery color?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Our condo living/dining room has a green distressed wood tv stand, mink/charcoal couch, tannish dining chairs, a glass table and painting pictured (which is currently hung too high!) ...area rug we have purchased is in colours and design attached . What color curtains do you suggest? Thanks

A: If you have pets or children, I'd suggest 1/4" Above Finished Floor (AFF).
Color - I'd suggest a deep color taken from the art (agree w/above advice) or your distressed green - I'd look at a greenish, blueish, charcoalish color fabric...sorry if that doesn't make sense when written but I can see it in my head. lol
Wishing you a brightly colored day! good Luck

**Q: Need help with designing window seat** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need help designing a window seat, hopefully wide enough for a nap, or guest. There is an air conditioner below the window. So, I would need 2 doors to open, to use in the hot months. The heating unit on the right does not operate, so, it can be covered.
window sill height 37"
top of A/C 23"
top of heating unit 24"
length of wall 10'
length of small wall 2'
width of window. 66"

Also, this is a rental apartment so, I don't want to go crazy with the costs.
i really appreciate your help.
Sharon Ratteree
314-724-5222

A: A window seat sounds like a good idea but keep in mind that 23" /24" plus the thickness of the wood plus the cushion is high for a window seat. I guess if it is for lounging and not sitting, you are okay. What budget do you have in mind? How long do you expect to stay in the rental?
You would need to have a carpenter come to take a look and advise you. Also, for ventilation, you can use some type of decorative panel with openings/perforations to allow AC cool air to escape. I advise you to ask the carpenter of electrician about putting a window seat over the AC (not my area of expertise)
It would be nice to build the seat to come to the edge of the 24" wall. You will need to have pillows or back cushions against the window wall in order to sit comfortably
on the seat. If no back cushion, make it about 18" deep. 4 doors along the front will work.
Search window seats on houzz and save them to an Ideabook. You will see a pattern developed of what you like. Using the saved Ideabook pictures as a guide, you will have an easy time designing the window seat. I usually like a seat cushion of at least 2" thick.
Wishing you a brightly colored day.

**Q: Front door and trim paint** *(in Paint)*

Oh no! Should the front door casing have been left white to match the window trim or does it look okay paint it all the same color? It looks better in person. To be exact, the color is SW sealskin.

A: It looks nice the way it is :)

**Q: carpeting help** *(in Home Decorating)*

Sure could use the great advice you all give. Our original carpet in the entire house (2 stories and 7 area's) needs to be replaced. Kids have grown and gone and we still have a few cats and dogs. We are considering cheap with Empire Carpet and A LOT more money with Costco but it looks like better carpet. HELP AND THANK YOU

A: Lukkiirish that is terrible. Recently I went did a color consultation where they used Empire. The installation looked lousy and I would have never recommended the particular carpet for the type of use and abuse it will get on the main staircase.
