Mark A Silva Architect creates place as a direct reflection of you and your site. As an award winning architect, Mark makes your project a fusion of your dreams, the personality of the site, and the authenticity of architecture.

Raised in a William Krisel-designed post and beam midcentury modern home in San Diego, the vernacular’s devotion to open spaces, expanses of glass, and seamless indoor-outdoor living has resonated with Silva from the outset of his career and is a visible thread throughout his portfolio.

“Post and beam midcentury modern architecture shaped my understanding of design from a young age, so it definitely influences my work, but I bring several different things to the table. The architectural language of midcentury modern is just one of those factors,” Silva says. “At the end of the day, every design is a unique creative work that comes from my head and hands to provide a beautiful, functional, and correct solution to a project’s unique needs.”

A veteran architect who has designed a stunning array of award-winning homes over his 40 year career, he views his work as ever-evolving creatively and, while rooted in an affinity for the philosophies of architectural luminaries like Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, and Oscar Niemeyer, his process is a constantly adaptive approach to realizing authentic architecture.

“My clients are interested in building not just a house, but a home and a work of art that expresses who they are,” Silva says. “That requires more than a rote representation of iconic ideas, and that’s the kind of meaningful architectural experience I strive to provide them. That, to me, is success.”

> Our family hit the jackpot with Mark!
>
> After years of living in a 1960s style Spanish farmhouse, we embarked on building a new, contemporary home. It was a sweeping transformation for us - the process was thrilling, demanding, at times overwhelming, especially amid a pandemic. Throughout it all, Mark was our North Star, steady, visionary and patient.
>
> Working with him was such a great experience. My husband and I absolutely love the home he designed for us. It’s modern, artistic, and totally one-of-a-kind, yet still warm, cozy, and perfect for our family. Mark has this ability to blend clean, contemporary lines with thoughtful details that make a space feel personal, inviting, and completely tailored to your lifestyle, needs, and (yes) even your wants and wishes.
>
> As first-time home builders, we were flying blind, and Mark guided us through every step. From the design phase to the endless county forms and permits (so many!), and even through the full year of construction. He was on-site for everything, talking to the trades, making sure every last detail was right. Not one brick or tile went unnoticed. He communicated clearly and often, both with the contractors and with me — and his attention to detail never wavered. Mark takes a lot of photos too! So ever stage of the project is very well preserved.
>
> Mark is creative, professional, and just awesome to work with. He had great suggestions on all the little (and big!) things that can feel like a lot. My brain would often go into decision making fatigue. I consulted with him on things like lighting, paint colors, even furniture choices. I really appreciated that.
>
> Five years later, Mark is still a part of our lives, our family considers him a friend. We couldn’t be happier with our home, or with the experience of working with him.
>
> Highly recommend!

> I met Mark by accident. 20 years ago we met on a snowy mountain road. Through a short conversation I knew I had met a creative and open artist. I had decided to be the general contractor on our new home even though I had no building experience. Mark was there with me step by step. He was open to answering questions, making adjustments and walking through the process with me. He was certain to create a house that we wanted, not just one to show off his capabilities as an architect. He was excited about the concept of using materials in unique ways. We would discuss function and design and he was open to compromise both ways. He always made me feel like I was part of the design process. Together, we built a home for my family that will always remain a special place in our lives. Hundreds of people have visited and are in awe of his beautiful piece of art that my family was privileged to live in.
> Mark will always be "my architect".

> Markitect/ Mark Silva is an impressive intuitive architecture. We went through two costly architectures before we stumble upon a house that Mark design. We couldn’t resist but to knock on this stranger’s house and ask for the Architecture’s name. We never regret the day we did that. The moment Mark step foot onto our property, he speaks as though he has been in my mind and could hear what I am thinking. The first thing he tells me that there should be curvature in the design of the home, I knew he is the one who knows of we want and our wishes. He is hands on with you and your builder from the very beginning of your dream home till the very end of its completion phase. If you think building a home is like having a baby, he cares for your baby to its perfection existence. We are so grateful for him and will never stop thanking him to have created us a dream home. I didn’t think I have a dream home until this piece of special property has landed in the hands of one talented architecture and that is Mark Silva. I know there are many architecture out there, but how many architecture will care about your home as much as you care? If you have asked this question, then I would tell you Mark Silva is your perfect architecture. Thank you for your time and good luck with building your dream home. MJ

> We hired Mark to design a new house for us. I chose Mark as one of the architects to interview because he was amenable to designing a contemporary structure using steel framing. In the process it was clear that Mark was the best choice. He listened well and was enthusiastic about all the environmentally friendly things we wanted to do. I enjoyed the whole process.

> I have had the pleasure of working with Mark Silva and his team on at least 7 new home or major remodel projects over the last few years; I cannot say enough about him! I own a medium-sized interior design firm in San Diego and we work with dozens of different architects each year. Mark is not only an incredibly talented architect, he is also one of the most collaborative and generous people I know. His designs are distinctively modern, meaningful, and above all, truly exceptional homes for his clients. Mark is definitely serious about his work, but he doesn’t take himself too seriously. He’s responsive to his clients’ requests, very hands on and is eager to work with the other design team members in order to realize the unique opportunities for each new home. If I were ever personally lucky enough to be able to hire Mark as my architect, I would do so in a heartbeat.

> Mark was the 9th architect interviewed and hired to restore a 1965 Mission Beach Mid Century Modern home to it's former glory as a jewel of the 21st century. He was a professional delight to work with!

> We originally hired Mark to design a new home for us but he convinced us that our 1960s era Mid Century Modern home had good "bones" and to remodel it instead. After seeing similar remodels that he had worked on, we changed our strategy and are very happy with the result, both in the value that was created and the functionality and aesthetic of our home.

> We hired Mark in 2013 to reimagine a modern house on Mount Soledad in La Jolla. The starting point was not easy. Busy street. Poor soil. Narrow lot with a steep slope. The brief was to conjour a a family house that may look modest from the front but opens into a grand "compound" with an Ibiza vibe, using stone, wood and concrete. We absolutely love it. Too boot, Mark was a pleasure and a true professional to work with. Btw I think we first found Mark on Houzz.

> I found Mark Silva online back in 2014 after the initial meeting at our house in San Diego California Pacific beach, I knew he was the man for the job. He took our 1950 ranch-style house and turned it into a mid century modern reinvented dream come true that without exaggeration is the nicest house on the street. Anyone who comes through is amazed at the use of space and materials mainly being concrete, steel glass and wood. I have always loved the houses view it's a over an 180° from downtown San Diego to La Jolla but now after working with Mark there's not a window or deck across the back that has not been some how enhanced. It's strange often times how friendships begin with Mark and I it was definitely forged through this major remodel through good old fashion hard work determination, ideas and dreams along with a lot of blood sweat and tears on both sides looking back it was quite possibly the biggest undertaking of my young life and wouldn't trade it for the world that being said I now consider Mark a very good friend and would highly recommend him to anyone thinking of not only upgrading but transforming their home. Feel free and reach out to me anytime for a referral

> We hired Mark to design our home after losing our home to a wildfire. In the beginning, Mark came to our lot and took the time to get a feel for where the house was going to sit. Views, wind, sun, etc. He took care when designing our home to make sure we benefited from as much view as possible. He designed our home using a Tridpanel system which essentially is a foam structure with a concrete covering. The structure is fully insulated and completely green. We did not realize the benefits to building this way til we started living in the home. Mark is professional and cared about our family. He was with us every step of the way. He is knowledgeable in traditional and non-traditional construction. I would highly recommend Silva Studios.

**★★★★★ — Jean Silva, Dec. 2015**

> Mark Silva did a complete home remodel in 2009. My husband and I were extremely happy with every aspect of his professionalism. He listened to our concerns and desires with respect. He was creative but also very aware of our financial constraints.
> We highly recommend Mark.

> We hired Mark to do our mid century modern remodel. We first spotted his work in San Diego magazine and instantly knew that he was the architect for us. Prior to seeing his work we had interviewed around 7 architects from Palm Springs, Los Angeles and even went as far as Arizona. For some reason these architects were not the perfect fit. We chose Mark for his creativity, his kindness and his vision. My husband passed away a month into the project and he has been there every step of the way to make sure our families vision comes to fruition. This is not our first build and I have never seen an architect stay with a project like Mark. He is very dedicated to his clients and makes sure that the quality, billing and structure is held to the highest standards. I would highly recommend Mark to all my friends if they were planning on building or remodeling.

**Q: one way view glass fence. Does a product like that exist?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello
Our house is located on the top of the hill so we want to preserve the view while we also want privacy so people walking by or neighbors
do not have direct view into our back yard and swimming pool
Presently there is a metal fence which is about 3 ft high.
I would like to replace that metal fence with a one way view glass fence.
Does a product like that exist?
If yes can you share the info where i can get it?
If not. Any idea how to solve our issue?
Thanks and have wonderful holidays
