I am writing after living in our amazing house for over a week, moving in two days after work was done on 12/21 ....ON TIME and On Budget! If someone else told me my story I might have trouble believing it: that Quality By Design started work the day after we closed and finished on the date in the contract; that the work was of the highest quality; that Joe and Carl gave excellent design and budget advice throughout; and that we had a positive relationship throughout. Over a 5 month renovation we found Joe and Carl to be two of the best people I've had the pleasure of working with in any setting. They were unbelievably hard working, smart, kind, respectful, patient, and skilled. Two signs of their work that were very important to us were 1) Joe and/or Carl were on site every day and 2) all of the subs they brought in were the best of the best and had a ton of respect for Joe and Carl. They have been immediately available for any questions or minor issues we've had since the work was finished. Joe documented the work on his site and I urge you to look at it. The cliche "I can not recommend them enough" is too true. We were so lucky to find Quality By Design. (It's the kitchen is featured in his project book.) Our previous kitchen was outdated, cramped and barely functional. A full bath and a peninsula took up most of the floor space in the kitchen, and a "window" overlooking the adjoining family room took up valuable wall space. Joe worked with us to design a functioning kitchen that fit our lifestyle with the limited space we had. After seeing our options on paper, we ended up reducing our bathroom to a half bath, filling in the window, and pushing a wall over a few inches to achieve our dream kitchen - in fact, its the picture for his website. > > I was very impressed with his skill and timeliness. Joe completely reshaped and renovated the bathroom, gutted the kitchen, ran all new electrical, installed new flooring, installed a new ceiling, built us a new wall, installed all the appliances and custom cabinets, installed a beautiful tile back-splash and did all the finishing touches (crown molding, painting, etc.) all within our predefined schedule. This was my first experience with a major renovation project, but I've heard horror stories from others of delays and hiccups along the way - we had none of that with Joe! Everything came together perfectly. I first met him doing a photo shoot of a bathroom project that he had built. I was completely impressed by the design and the quality of the workmanship. I thought that his prices would be totally inaccessible for us, but he agreed to come over to look at the space. The shoji doors are hiding a washer/dryer combo and a kitchenette. The toilet is in it's own separate room. A: Congrats!!! **Q: Kitchen cabinet closings** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just paid a fair amount of money for a kitchen . They gave us two different kinds of cabinet closings in one kitchen. Some close flush and some have the center panel . I believe one is called full face . Anyway we are disturbed. Have never seen two different styles in one kitchen and we were not consulted. We asked for full face closing. They said it is because the bigger cabinet might sag unless it has a centre upright and the one above the range hood or microwave is always with a center panel. Is this true? I cannot find a photo of a kitchen with two different cabinet closures, help. We haven't made the last payment yet...... A: Can you post some pictures? **Q: Bought a 750 sq ft 1BR in Manhattan that needs renovating...HELP!** *(in Before & After)* This is quickly becoming a gut renovation, though that was not the original intention when I purchased the apartment. My best recommendation would be to initially hire someone to help sort the pricing out. This is not a small endeavor on your part, and small % missteps can translate into some serious pricing issues later. Good professional advice will actually save you money at the end. On this I have no doubt. One of the people you should be talking to is Agnese Purvinska . She is listed here as Aggie Designs. I've done business with her and found her to be extremely open, friendly, and reasonable ($) I think she would be invaluable in working out your project issues. Good Luck! **Q: Spacing of light and mirrors over vanity in master bath** *(in Design Dilemma)* So here's my dilemma … during the planning phase of my master bath renovation, I planned on two mirrors centered over the sinks and three sconces spaced evenly over my 66" vanity. The vanity was designed two separate 33" cabinets with three equal stacked drawers. Unfortunately, when the vanity was installed today, I realized a little too late that I would not be able to have the sconces and mirrors spaced as planned if the sinks were in fact centered in the cabinets. Instead, there will be a lot more space surrounding the center sconce that the ones on either end. Is this okay? Any other suggestions? A: The exact same dilemma occurred on one of my projects recently, and going with a full mirror worked perfectly. If the budget allows for the sconce -in -mirror, go for it!.
