That's why we decided to 'splurge' a little and hire Akke Woodworks. It's a decision we are so happy we made. Once again, Axel and his team were nothing short of amazing! As was our experience the first time, we feel as if we got a 2-for-1 deal by getting both woodworkers and interior designers. Not to mention that they completed the project ahead of schedule and within our budget -- no hidden extras! Not only did Axel guide us through the design process, but he advised us as to how to best distribute our budget; in other words, how to get the best bang for our buck. When my wife was having a hard time finding picture frames, Axel offered to make them out of the cut-offs of the molding we were using, as well as different styles that they had in their truck (at no additional material charge!) > He also had a great understanding of the practical needs we had; we were short on storage. The team designed and built open shelving cabinets, where we store our wine collection, integrated into a doorway that he suggested should be reduced to create more wall space and allowing enough room for an additional table; a perfect combination of form and function! They also solved our noise issue by designing and installing sound-absorbing ceiling panels that are positioned to look very geometric and stylized. We built the ceiling and did all of the woodwork but didn't specify the furniture. So, unfortunately, I don't know who built it. It's Black Walnut with a satin clear coat finish. **Q: What is w** *(in Photo Questions)* What are the dimensions for the entryway? A: Thanks for your interest in our work, Michelle. This image is from a job of outs that we did 9 years ago. I can't tell you the exact dimensions, but it's probably around 5' wide and 8' tall -- they're 10' ceilings. **Q: Could the MDF be stained?** *(in Photo Questions)* I am building a Craftsman-style home and am seriously thinking about wood panel walls with this style to them. Could the MDF that you used be stained or is there a better material to use for that purpose? A: Hi Jan. I apologize for the delay on this response. Thank you for your interest in our work! To answer your question, MDF is not a stainable material. If you would like to use it in place of a stain-grade wood -- for it's stability and cost savings -- you might want to consider having a decorative finish applied to it to appear to be wood. However, a decorative finish is significantly more expensive than a standard stain and poly -- which would cut into your savings. Personally, I would use MDF and have it spray finished. I like molding when it's monochromatic, rather than exposing the grain in wood; the shadow lines are more pronounced and there's no grain to distract from the profile. Good luck with your project! **Q: How to add the lovely demi-shelf?** *(in Photo Questions)* I love the beautiful demi-shelf that you've added above the second set of panels. Most curious is that there don't seem to be any brackets. How were you able to add it? A: Hi Jan. I'm not quite sure what you're referring to. That brown line above the second set of panels is a continuation of the oak floor nosing from the second floor. It only projects 1.5" from the panel frame -- 3/4" for the cove molding, 1/4" reveal, and 1/2" nosing radius.
