**Q: help pick out a mirror!!! PLEASE** *(in Design Dilemma)*

helping a friend w a bathroom. single bowl, 60” long vanity. bought a 4 bulb light for above future mirror. similar to pic. any suggestions? 2 people use bathroom

A: Hello! It is so nice of you to help out a friend. My first thought would be to do a large rectangular mirror, whether it be a framed mirror or just a plate mirror that is custom cut and installed by a glass and mirror company. That way, if both people are using the bathroom at the same time they could both use the mirror. I also love the way mirrors make a room look bigger and would make the most of having room for a large one. Luckily, pretty much any mirror could look great there, depending what your friend's style preferences are. Good luck!

**Q: bar stools for basement?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Type of bar stools for this space?

A: There are so many options! It's nice you have such a neutral space to work with. I like all of the options below for different reasons, it is probably best to pick something that also coordinates well with the other furniture in the room. Good luck!

**Q: Furniture Layout Suggestion for Living Room** *(in Furniture)*

Hi
I'm trying to figure out the best way to layout a couch and TV in the great room (see floor plan and pictures). The main issue I have is that the room depth (12'8") is a little limited as the fireplace and counter overhang eats up some of the room (aprox 2 feat) . This area will be the main area that we will be spending most of our time in as well as entertaining guests.
Additional Notes
\- The Fireplace has a hidden outlet so it wont be an issue to mount a TV  if you think that would be the best place to mount put it.
\- If possible we would also like to make the counter overhang usable by putting thin stools that can tuck away under the overhang.

A: Hello! I can see how this would feel like a somewhat tricky space. I don't know how many people you're hoping to seat or how you'll use the space, so this may not be the best suggestion for your needs. Have you thought about doing two sofas facing each other with a coffee table in the middle? On the fireplace you could install an adjustable TV mount to tip it in whichever direction you needed for watching. Along one of the walls you could put a console table with decor if you like! Just a thought!

**Q: Living room looks off .. :( help me figure out why??** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi, I moved into an older house and have been renovating it slowly. the living room has a teal accent wall, gray couch and a chair/rug. I have Large floor to roof north facing window and plenty of direct sunlight, curtains will be hard due to the slanted ceiling. however, for some reason, it looks off, (not put together, and i cant figure out why) Any suggestions welcome , regarding any additions and new colors. thanks
(PS: the dining table and chairs near the window / red chair will be going and i can use the rug in my dining room, but the couch,table and chair will have to stay as they are new. same with the wall color)

A: Hello Jay, It looks like you have a great start. From your pictures, it just looks like there is a lot going on in the space right now. When you remove the table/chairs and red chair, that should definitely help open up the space. Having that chair in the middle of the walkway may be sort of stopping up the flow and moving to be next to the couch may help. 

I would probably choose new art and a different rug. The way the art is hung is not very pleasing to the eye because the balance is off. I don't know if you would be willing to replace the gallery wall with a large piece of art or not, but that might make it feel more cohesive and contemporary. The current rug looks a little like camo, so something modern but also more "clean" looking would tie the space together more. Good luck!

**Q: kitchen hardwood or tile?** *(in Remodeling)*

We started installing our floating engineered hardwood (white oak 3 mm wear layer) and we started double guessing our decision to install it in the kitchen. We would love how it looks, but we are concerned of scratching (especially when changing the appliances) and how to keep it clean considering we cook a lot. Photos are from the kitchen and our installed living room.

A: Hello Oana, It looks like the remodel is coming along nicely! We wrote an article about this very topic: How to Select the Best Flooring for Your Kitchen
We talk about different benefits of each type of flooring for the kitchen. From a design perspective, I would go ahead and install the wood flooring in the kitchen as well. We often put hardwood flooring in kitchens. Oak is hard so it generally holds up well and when you run the same flooring throughout a space, it tends to look bigger. Of course, it is completely up to you, if you know you'll be pretty hard on your floors and need a more durable option, tile could be a great choice!
