D3 Architects is a Seattle based architecture firm with design/build capabilities specializing in beauty on budget.  We have designed and built homes in Ravenna, Hawthorne Hills, Wedgewood, Ballard, Fremont, Greenlake, Phinney Ridge, Queen Anne, and Capitol Hill.

Daylight
We design for daylight, opening our buildings up to let in natural light from all directions.  From the south and west, we like the warmer light in more public, social parts of the home.  Northern light is great in bedrooms and bathrooms because it provides even, diffuse light.

Live the plan  
The floor plan is the main tool that an architect has to organize a building, and thus, organize the lives of the people in the building.  When we are designing the plan we imagine daily life at every scale, from how the siting and orientation impacts daylight and access to making space near the shower for towel hooks.  We create mock ups in the office, an important exercise that helps bring our drawings to life.  “Living the plan” becomes a chorus in every part of the design, ensuring that life in one of our projects is fully supported.

Coming up with ideas is easy, editing is the hard part.  Our job as architects is to assemble our ideas into projects that make sense, look and feel whole, that can be built on time and on budget, and literally become the support structure for your life.

**Q: kitchen cabinets** *(in Photo Questions)*

What a beautiful kitchen. May I know who was the cabinetry maker for this one? Thanks.

A: Thank you. We have a custom cabinet shop for our projects. We can create anything you desire.

**Q: Are the wardrobe and drawers custom or part of a system?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wondering if the wardrobe/drawers are custom or part of a standard system. Also what is their depth?  Thanks!

A: Hi Barbara, they are custom, although it wouldn't be hard to make this out of standard cabinets.  The depth is 25" from the back of the box to the front of the door, so its about 23.5" interior depth.  That is plenty of depth to get clothing hangers in there.

**Q: KITCHEN SINK DILEMMA** *(in Kitchens)*

My wife and I are building a new house and designing her dream kitchen.  We are having a dilemma about what we want in a kitchen sink.  We know we do not want a farmhouse sink, and we have room for a large sink.  Double bowl, single bowl, stainless or composite.  The single bowls with accessories look very functional.  We do however tend to hand wash a lot of things and use the second bowl we currently have for a drying rack.  I think I'd like to get out of the habit and use the high end dishwasher we will have though.  

Any advise would be appreciated.

A: A lot of our clients have loved the Kohler 45" Stages and all the bells and whistles it comes with. A very generous sink and everyone has appreciated the cutting board feature (or you could use the raised sink area under the cutting board as a drain board for hand washed dishes).

**Q: Tall friends, help us with our hood!** *(in Appliances)*

The hub is a 6’2 and up until this kitchen we have always had micro hoods.  We are getting a real chimney hood in this kitchen, and he’s afraid it’s going to be right in his face because we have 8 foot ceilings. If we put it 36 inches above the range top, it will be as tall as him, but that is the max distance from the range top, so I would prefer a few inches lower. But at 5’2” I don’t have the same issue.  Can anyone help us figure out if this is even an issue?

A: I am 6'3" and have no issues with lower hoods.  But like @acm is saying, make sure to read the specifications and installation instructions of your hood carefully.  Many are meant to be installed around 24" above the cooking surface to effectively exhaust grease laden vapors.

**Q: Exterior colors dilemma** *(in Paint)*

We have been in this house for a few years and now plan on reroofing, getting new gutters and painting the exterior. Currently, I feel the roof and paint colors do not go well with the fireplace stack. My husband likes the brick detailing and hasn’t been very receptive to the idea of painting the stack. I would like the fireplace, roof and paint to look more cohesive. The fireplace stack is visible from the street, we live on a corner lot.
Choosing colors has been difficult- the front of the house feels more “colonial” to me, but the fireplace is more in keeping with the craftsman style houses in our neighborhood.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A: The form and the details do not seem to be consistently any historical style, which is pretty common for mid 20th century homes .  The tall entry gable may feel tudor but the door trim looks like classical revival pilaster and pediment.  The window trim seems more craftsman.  The chimney feels a bit English, but not totally sure.  And raising the whole house up off the ground with a full height basement like that does not really have any deep historical precedent outside of farm structures.  

That said, I don't think you need to follow any historical period with your color palette.  I personally like the tan brick, and would take that cue to make the house paint and roof warmer colors: possibly cream or warm grey for the body, a brown or darker warm grey for the trim and roof.  Just some thoughts.

**Q: Picking counters...help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are painting our cabinets BM simply white, which is a creamy white and I would like to do a blue backsplash. Example below of what I plan to do with the backsplash, but I want a light counter. We are doing black hardware to tie into our dining room set which has black chairs and some raw edge shelving with iron supports.
Anyone have quartz or granite ideas that they love for creamy white cabinets?

A: I think the palette you have chosen feels welcoming.  It has subtle warmth and texture, not too busy, but enough going on to feel alive.  Well done.
