Established in 1983, Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel has been transforming homes for more than 43 years. As a true design/build firm, we build what we design with our clients, whether it's an aging-in-place bathroom, an open-concept kitchen, a 3- or 4-season porch, a mudroom, a basement, a whole-house renovation, or a custom new home. We also have a residential painting division and a Home Services Division for past clients.

Our purpose is to improve the lives of our clients.

We make things better, not just different. We treat every design as unique, not as a “copy & paste.” Anyone can do “different.” Few can do “better.“ And with our proprietary design process, remodels always end in success.

We treat homeowners like we want to be treated. Golden rule? Pretty much, but a bit more than that. It’s about empathy. We’ve done our own remodels. We know the stress and anxiety. We’ve walked in your shoes.

We have deep and accountable talent. Most design/build firms have a few skilled people and sub out the rest. We do the opposite because we have more than 50 full-time employees—our own carpenters, project managers, designers, draftspeople, and painters.

Trust is everything. Without it, nothing of lasting value can be accomplished. And that is why one of our four values is “Uncommon Integrity”. It means doing the right thing, whether it is profitable or not, whether someone is watching or not, whether it is popular or not.

We are one of a handful of companies that have won the BBB’s Torch Award for Ethics in Business twice. Our GuildQuality™ client satisfaction rating in 2025 reached 95%. And yes, we measure that every single day.

We specialize in custom homes, architecturally appropriate additions, accessible bathroom retreats, entertaining kitchens, dramatic wine cellars, and fine finishes that help clients upgrade their lifestyles without leaving home.

> We are totally in love with our kitchen. We never knew we could have this much space. I would recommend Murphy Bros for all your remodel needs. Very professional. They take your ideas and mesh them with theirs to make a beautiful room. They have you involved every step of the way. Do not do anything without your approval They start out as your contractor and end up your friends

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> Thank you Barb for your kind comments. We think of you now as our friends too! Enjoy your new kitchen. it is very impressive.

> Pretty rough experience for our kitchen remodel.
>
> Professional staff, solid reputation and we were excited about the idea of an in-house cabinet maker. These were all of the elements that brought us to Murphy Bros originally. They worked well in helping with an insurance claim we were navigating. But poor communication throughout our engagement, complicated deliverable quality for the limited work they completed, and enough missed deadlines that we went another direction mid-project and would not recommend.

**★★★★★ — Eileen Ploussard, April 2025**

> We cannot express our appreciation for Murphy Bros. enough! We had an addition and kitchen remodel to our home that was designed and built by Murphy Bros. Our designer Elly, Project Manager Shane and Lead Carpenter Shawn were amazing. The customer service, attention to detail, professionalism, and overall quality of the work is fantastic. They really cared about the project and walked us through each step of the way! Our new added space and kitchen is beautiful! We have more space for entertaining our family and friends, and a beautiful functioning kitchen. We admire and appreciate all the work Murphy Bros did for us, thank you so much!

**★★★★★ — Chris Murphy, April 2025**

> Quality work. Outstanding customer service, communication and execution. We had Murphy Bros create a bigger screen porch and some other tie ins off of that project and we could not be happier. If you take anything from this review, know this, they care. There was never any confusion on timeline. If there was any issues, they addressed it or saw it coming and prepared for it. All around good people.

> So happy with our new kitchen! Done timely, with great care and meeting our expectations! Great team to work with

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> Thanks for sharing your satisfaction with the greater Houzz world Maria! You were so great to work with on this project! And I gotta say, my new favorite color is now blue!

**★★★★★ — Jennifer Floyd, Feb. 2023**

> We did a large kitchen renovation summer of 2022 and are so happy we worked with Murphy Brothers. Our lead carpenter treated our project like it was his own home - he was so thorough and an excellent carpenter. We did not feel like we needed to micromanage the project because the MBros team stayed on top of it. We absolutely love how our kitchen turned out and would highly recommend working with them!

**★ — Scott, Feb. 2023**

> I struggle to find where in my project Murphy Brothers was worth the money spent. As soon as the actual work began, there was one problem after another. Trust is mentioned a lot in their literature and sales pitch, and that couldn't be further from the truth. The initial materials used were wrongly sized, sloppily finished, or outright wrong. Requiring varying levels of correction or complete tear out and redoing. The concreate mess up was especially "fun", during their tear out and corrective work, damaging the brick on my home too.
> The people hired and work performed were not supervised. If I didn't find any of the problems, Murphy Brothers would have just cashed the checks and went on their way. No follow-up inspections were done on the work performed by their hires for correctness. So again, what expert, industry knowledge/value is provided? It is expected a homeowner to catch everything? That's impossible, it's not our skillset/job.
> With all the extra time and hassle this project was for me, I could have done just as good of job hiring random tradesman and saved myself the Murphy overhead cost.
> Recently a window on a new door has began to leak, so this project still isn't done.
> During this project they did not put any yard signs or advertisements that this was their project, or send me a finishing survey like they said they would during the consulting process. That would indicate an effort to inflate their reviews.
> My advice is, if you are not one of their few big projects, they will not give yours adequate attention.

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> Scott, just like you, we are frustrated when things don’t go as planned despite detailed plans and directions. And even when it isn’t our staff making the error but a trusted trade partner who passed on the work to an unproven new hire, as in this case, we are still responsible. That is why we replaced both of your stoops as soon as our project manager learned of the slope error. We also offered to tear out and replace your entire driveway. Against our advice, you declined. Instead, as directed, we poured additional concrete to successfully meet the original specifications that were not followed by the concrete company in the first place. Believing you were satisfied, we wrapped things up with a mutual handshake and a smile. A few days later, much to our surprise, you complained to our owner, wanting additional compensation, but when he offered to meet with you and discuss other alternatives, you declined to do so.
>
> Regarding your “leak”, we did inspect your entry door as part of our 2-10 limited warranty commitment. Our expert on such matters, who has more than 30 years of experience, concluded the single bead of moister on the sill he noted was normal window condensation, a common occurrence in our extreme climate. This is especially apparent when new more efficient products are introduced into existing environments, which we have no control over.
>
> Scott, we completed all the work in our building agreement and did so according to codes and industry standards for best practices, which we shared with you at the outset. There is only so much we can reasonably do to make clients happy Scott. I’m sorry you are still angry, but we are at a loss to know what else we might do to fulfill an obligation we have already met.

**★★★★ — HU-38639301, Nov. 2022**

> Overall happy with the results of our remodel. The carpenters and cabinet maker did a wonderful job. The company was responsive to fix issues when we hit some snags.

**★★★★★ — Brenda, June 2019**

> We had Murphy Brothers do a complete remodel of our kitchen, laundry room and powder room, as well as installing new floors in our family room. From initial contact, design to execution, we found them professional, tuned into what we wanted and trustworthy. The attention to detail and craftmanship is outstanding. We love our new bright, clean and functional space!!

**★★ — Emily Therneau, Dec. 2016**

> We are still so confused about our poor experience with this company. We consulted with the owner a few years back on a kitchen remodel which we ended up shelving. We really liked him though, so when we bought a new house this year that needed a complete bathroom remodel, we were excited to contact Murphy Bros again. They have obviously expanded and are doing well, as this time we were assigned a consultant & project manager and never interacted with the owner. Despite our consultant being extremely late for our first appointment, we were impressed with their process and felt we'd be in good hands. It ended up being a long, drawn-out mess of a project. In our first meeting, we told our consultant we had multiple projects that we wanted completed over the next few years, and we were looking for a contractor we can trust to hire over and over again. I even asked her to work on a quote for another small project I wanted to do right away. I never heard back from her regarding that, and they never followed up with us after the project was finished to get feedback. They never seemed interested in our experience. I can't express how frustrated we were with their complete inability to effectively communicate with us throughout the job. The calendar feature which was a big selling point for us was pointless as it didn't work to begin with and then they would change it at the last minute with no explanation to us anyway. My guess is they treat their larger-paying clients better. The sub-contractors were great, but the actual representatives from the company were very disappointing. The finished product was beautiful, but the process was not worth it.

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> Emily, I am sorry that our design/build consultant failed to meet your expectations and deliver the level of attention all our clients deserve. I think you should know that during your project she had personal issues that were likely distracting, eventually resulting in her resignation in October. I am not sharing that as an excuse but only to let you know that I think she is a better and more competent person than how she performed for you. Even so, the response you gave online was justified and I would really rather be informed than to wrongly think that we satisfactorily weathered a tough patch or two with you.
>
> If you think that we might ever have a second chance to earn your trust in the future, I would be grateful. However, I completely understand if that is not the case. For what it’s worth, I want you to know that we have instituted a series of mini “satisfaction” surveys at key milestones in each project so we can monitor and respond to issues while they can still be addressed and the “experience” put back on track if needed. We’ve also added a new Communications Checklist to set shared and realistic expectations regarding communications with our key staff before projects begin. This is very important because an unmet expectation is the very definition of frustration—the last thing any of us wants!
>
> I believe every failure, every obstacle, is an opportunity to improve. And so, because we do care very much about the client experience, we are taking this opportunity to improve both responsiveness and communication.
>
> I can see that it would be easy to conclude that smaller projects, like yours, warrant less care and attention. While smaller projects may logically require fewer resources, they should never receive a lesser degree of care on our part. So, rest assured the size of your project had nothing to do with your experience.
>
> Fortunately, we do still garner mostly great experience ratings. Be that as it may, I am not happy at all about any that come up less than great, so again I apologize.
>
> Sincerely—John Murphy, owner.

**★★★★★ — jenio12, Aug. 2016**

> After interviewing multiple contractors for our screened in porch project, we choose Murphy Bros. Our initial visit was with Cherie. Cherie was extremely knowledgeable and a very good listener. If we had any questions, she took the time to explain thoroughly and at times re-explained :) Everyone we dealt with were professional and more than eager to make us happy. Sean's craftsmanship was suburb!! Our supervisor, Drew, was thoughtful and efficient and always making himself available to us. Working with Murphy Bros felt like working with family. We LOVE our new outdoor space and could not be happier. I highly recommend checking Murphy Bros. out for your next remodel!

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> Thanks for that great review. We are more than pleased to add your screen porch remodel to our Houzz list of great projects!

**★★★★★ — pparish1003, June 2016**

> We found Murphy Brothers at a trade show and set up a date for Cherie to meet at our home. Our project consisted of two full bathrooms to be remodeled and a partial remodel of a powder room. From the first meeting, we were impressed with the detail and professionalism of the company. Going into the project, every step and cost along the way was outlined. The quality of work was impressive and Drew kept in contact on a regular basis. Most everything was completed as scheduled.
> We enjoyed all of the crew; plumbing, electrical, tile, and of course, Shawn. Our finished product is beautiful, functional and we are so pleased. Thanks, Murphy Brothers!

**★★★★★ — John Schumacher, April 2016**

> I met a representative with Murphy Bros at a home show a couple years ago and was very pleased on how he focused on listening to my perspective and providing feedback rather than the singular focus of getting a customer in the system. I made a note that the company's approach was compatible with what I wanted to get out of my projects.
>
> Later the following year, I contacted Murphy Bros to help remodel my main floor, which includes kitchen, dining, family and living rooms. We focused on the kitchen and put in new cabinets, backsplash, sinks, and appliances. They got in touch with the right designer that was very capable and still open to my perspectives. The designer did some free consultation afterwards to help come up with a concept for the living room. They used sub-contractors which were very capable and open to my hectic work schedule. As an example of their flexibility - I wanted to put in the floor myself, and they respected this and gave me helpful tips that I used. Jamie was my project lead, and did a great job helping coordinate everything.
>
> In all, I'm very happy with everything that was done. The kitchen looks and operates great, and the rest of the house is (slowly) coming into form. There were a few minor hiccups along the way, but it was all handled professionally, so I can't complain. I would definitely recommend them for projects.

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> Thanks for the positive feedback John. Staying customer focused is a big, big deal to us. And yes, you are so right about having a dedicated project manager to handle all the details, especially the ones that present challenges. Jamie is one of our best.

**★★★★★ — blsh52, April 2016**

> We have used Murphy Bros. twice, most recently this past year - 2015. We bought and moved into an older home in St. Paul and remodeled a master bath (complete tear down to the studs and re-build), a kitchen floor with in-floor heating, complete remodel of main floor powder room, complete finishing of a basement, and converting a back 2nd floor roof to a functional deck.
>
> Spectacular! From design to execution and build, every detail was given attention. Estimates and costs were provided up front, and budget was maintained - no surprises!
> I would recommend Murphy Bros. in a heartbeat and welcome visits to review their handiwork.

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> That's fantastic! We are so glad your remodeling experience with us was so positive. We love it when our clients use the words "no surprises". That means we did everything right! Looking forward to our next project with you.

**★★★★★ — danlynne, Feb. 2016**

> Our downstairs family room, bathroom, hallway and one bedroom had to be renovated after a water overflow. I found Murphy Bros on Google after searching renovation/remodeling companies. I left them a message and got a return call promptly. Each professional I met with was very knowledgeable and personable. I was very impressed with the ease of getting the project organized and how they made sure I understood each step by giving detail and easy to understand explanations. Any calls I made were returned promptly. Throughout the project everyone worked well together and they all seemed like they genuinely cared about the work they were completing. I even received followup phone calls throughout the project to see if I had any questions or comments! We love the look of our newly remodeled rooms and would highly recommend Murphy Bros!

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> What a great review! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and kudos. We always love (and need) to hear from clients that had a great experience. Thanks so much for sharing!

**★★★★★ — HU-2162100, Jan. 2016**

> Although my job was not very big, it was important to me to get it done quickly and with quality craftsmanship. I used their new cloud-based BuilderTrend app to monitor the job throughout the entire process. I uploaded photos of the area to be remodeled and conferred with their project manager and lead carpenter to schedule and complete the job in very, very quick fashion. I could not be happier with the responsiveness and the results!

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> It's great to hear the new BuilderTrend app is adding to the remodeling experience!

**★★★★★ — beverly\_m\_johnson, Nov. 2015**

> We can't recommend Murphy Brothers highly enough. Hiring a contractor is not an easy task, the integrity of every Murphy Brothers employee cannot be matched.
> The work they did on our addition and kitchen remdel is breathtaking. The quality of their construction is rivaled only by their design talent. We still can't believe this is our kitchen and the additional has transformed our home, we couldn't be happier!

**Comment from Murphy Bros. Design \| Build \| Remodel:**

> Hey Bev thanks so much for the kind words! You guys were so much fun to work with and I agree, your project(s) turned out fantastic!

**★★★★★ — mgower78, Aug. 2015**

> We had a great experience with Murphy Bros. We were lucky to have Jamie take the lead on our project. He was very on top of our project and extremely prompt on answering any questions or concerns we may have had. The "work crew" was also great, we are extremely happy with the quality. Shawn did a great job paying attention to all the little details.

**★★★★★ — gennert, May 2014**

> We hired Murphy Bros to help us renovate two bathrooms in our 1980s home, and they were wonderful to work with. We updated a shower, tile, floor, sinks, countertops, toilets, and refinished the cabinets. Our designer and project manager were always available to ask questions, and they were great to work with when getting started and choosing materials, concepts, and colors. They worked within our budget, and also accommodated time in the schedule for us to do a few things we wanted to tackle ourselves -- like wall and ceiling painting.
>
> I really appreciated that they were committed to doing quality work throughout the whole process, and that we could work together as partners. We were always kept informed about the project schedule, and overall we had an excellent experience. Once we kicked off, the project took ~5 weeks. We love the results!

**★★★★★ — cindyvavra, May 2014**

> We had an extremely difficult, large remodeling project at our home and I can't say enough about the professional and efficient manner in which this was handled by Murphy Bros. from the beginning design phase to the point of completion. They were brilliant in bringing thoughts and ideas to us throughout the project. By our choice we had moved out of our home during the remodel, and their constant communication with us throughout the project eased any concerns we may have had about not being there every day. The subcontractors they chose to do our project were extremely professional and used the highest quality materials. We would HIGHLY recommend Murphy Bros. for any home design or remodeling job, whether large or small!!!
> Attached is a picture of the magnificent wine room they created for us out of a former toy room in our downstairs which we no longer used. Every time we enjoy a glass of wine in there, we feel as if we've been transported on a mini-vacation to another country!

**★★★★★ — Tom Sweeney, May 2014**

> Content Craftsmen has worked with Murphy Bros. for the past year. We are repeatedly impressed by their creative design and flawless execution of the most demanding custom remodeling projects. Plus, John Murphy, Cherie Poissant, Aaron Lenz and Dan Flaherty are simply good people. Congratulations to them on winning the 2013 NARI Contractor of the Year Award for best kitchen over $120K in the Minneapolis market. Well deserved.

However, while the home was sound structurally, the layout and amenities were functionally lacking. The rooms were small, closed off, the appliances were inefficient, and the cabinetry was worn. What they envisioned was a space that honored the original character while offering modern c…

 - Description: In pursuit of more space and a refined layout, this family wanted us to expand their home with a thoughtfully designed upper-level addition. The new footprint made room for a spacious walk-in closet and a luxurious, modern primary bathroom—complete with a soaking tub, walk-in shower, and more storage than ever before. Two additional bedrooms, a hallway bathroom, and expanded hall storage round out the new layout, offering comfort, functionality, and expandability for years to come. Designing the…

 - Description: Once dark, closed off, and dysfunctional, this basement was nicknamed “The Cave”—a space the homeowners dreaded using except in emergencies. They knew their lower level could be so much more than a storm shelter and seasonal storage. Their vision? A functional, welcoming space to enjoy year-round. The result is a midcentury modern transformation with improved flow, generous storage, and vibrant character. Thoughtful touches of paint, wallpaper, and décor bring energy to the design, while the ope…

 - Location: Excelsior, MN
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: These Excelsior homeowners bought this property primarily for the lakeshore view. All was well until they realized that the floor plan didn’t leave adequate room for a larger kitchen remodel and a dining room. Their first attempt to design a large enough dining addition with another remodeler failed. So, they lived in frustration without the dining room view for years. Fortunately, for all of us, their next-door neighbors had just finished a deck/sauna remodel with Murphy Bros. and gladly made t…

 - Description: The last thing this couple expected when they returned from vacation was a flood in their Bloomington kitchen. While they were gone the dishwasher sprung a leak leaving the homeowner with an all-to-common insurance claim. Dishwasher leaks, (loose fittings & bad seals), are among the most common reason for such claims. For many homeowners, such a disaster can actually be seen as a blessing in disguise. Well, perhaps a really big, stressful disguise, but an opportunity nonetheless to leverage thei…

 - Description: We first met this couple at the Minneapolis Home and Garden Show a few years ago. At the time, they envisioned an expansive remodel including a new kitchen and a large addition. But through our Phase 1 design conversations—where we dive into scope, feasibility, and cost—it became clear that their best path forward was to focus on a single, high-impact space: a 4-season sun porch addition. They loved to entertain and throw big family celebrations, so this year-round dedicated space was the best a…

 - Description: One minute, you're grilling food on your deck, and the next, you're evacuating because your grill is out of control. Then, as you watch from across the street, the grill explodes! Flames quickly engulf the back of your house causing so much water and smoke damage that the whole dwelling needs renovating. Emotionally such events are devastating. This isn't how dinner on the deck is supposed to go. But now this homeowner had the opportunity to restore what they lost and make some spaces even bette…

 - Description: Same kitchen layout, big transformation. The remodeling challenge was to create a timeless design with a very custom feel. Starting with all-new cabinet doors and drawer front, we upgraded the look to a shaker style and painted with a two-tone design. The addition of crown molding helped create more height and visual interest. Selecting a simple elongated subway tile paired with soft black hardware achieved the timeless look. This kitchen is a great example of how, with the right material update…

 - Description: What if the perfect home you've been looking for was the one you already had? Like so many these days, this family was torn between renovating and relocating. They thought about it for years. Do we give up what we love about this place in hopes of finding something as good or better somewhere else? Eventually, they made the decision and embarked on a journey to create the home they had been searching for—right where they lived. But this isn’t just a simple renovation; it’s a full-scale transform…

 - Description: This retired couple had finally had enough of this old, dark, remarkably inefficient kitchen. Having remodeled with us before, they trusted Murphy Bros. to help them solve a host of function and aesthetic issues. As with all our remodels, the main goal is to make life better for our clients, not just different. When asked that question in the video below, both had their own very personal story to tell in answer to that question. Hers was probably the most quotable: "For years and years I used to…

 - Description: When these retired homeowners decided to downsize, being closer to family was an important factor, in selecting the last home they would purchase. They also wanted to optimize their space for hosting. Unfortunately, the original bathrooms on both levels of the home they chose were unsuitable for long-term use. Changes had to be made. So, the main floor bathroom got a complete overhaul! Keeping the same craftsman's style as the rest of the home, these homeowners sought to keep the classic design…

 - Description: When a warranty job surfaced in their daughter’s ensuite bathroom, these homeowners decided to have some fun when updating this small but mighty bathroom design. With their daughter’s input, they decided to go with a colorful, bold, elongated subway tile in a peacock green color paired with oversized white penny rounds. Both tile designs offer a timeless feature but with a modern twist. With a smaller footprint to work with, storage needed to be a top priority, being a teenage girl would be usin…

 - Description: For years this family spent every day in a dysfunctional kitchen space that magically attracted clutter. Most of us can relate. To make matters worse, these homeowners cooked a lot and really cherished that family-oriented experience, and wanted it to be more convenient and much easier. They needed a highly functional space and as much of it as possible—especially countertops and accessory storage. The solution came in the form of an unusual island configuration, an added pantry, and a 2-toned d…

**Q: Love the small vanity. What is the brand? Where was it purchased.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Planning a small powder room and debating between small vanity and pedestal. 25” wide would be ideal

A: Hi Joanne,
This is a prefab 24" vanity from Wayfair. The original name was: Broadway 24” single bathroom vanity with ceramic top in the Color: Vintage Green.
Wayfair tends to change the names of their items often, and it now seems to be under the name: Cheriton 24'' Single Bathroom Vanity with Ceramic Top in Vintage Green.
This vanity offers the perfect amount of storage for a powder bathroom. Hope this helps and good luck with your own powder bathroom project!
