A: Those measurements ate a rise over run calculation. For every 12" of horizontal progression, the roof moves up 9" (for 9/12). If you want to know the angle of your roof, you can do several things. You can measure it from within by accessing the roof rafters from your attic (they'll have the same rise/run as the exterior), you can try to work with a photograph and manipulate it in photoshop to find the angle. You could measure the peak of your roof and the soffit to find the angle. There are more eccentric approaches; you could toss a ball up there and time how long it takes to roll back down, and use that time to determine acceleration, normal forces, and isolate the angle. You could also measure the shadow cast by your roof. If you measure an angle, 12\*tan(theta) will give you the rise. **Q: Need help identifying Architectural style!** *(in Design Dilemma)* A: I would place it before 1915 or so. The house adopts clear vernacular architecture from southern states and lacks evidence of being built with air conditioning in mind. A lot of vernacular styles in the south were abandoned when residential air conditioning was implemented. Additionally, I'd avoid taking on Greek to the described style because it seems to draw more from colonial Acadian architecture than consciously from any neoclassical source. I know I said otherwise earlier, but the morning brings new light to the pictures. **Q: Help with stair layout!** *(in Building a Home)* Hi Everyone-- We are designing an addition and don't have an architect--just draftsmen. They came back with a drawing that needs a little TLC. Our biggest issue is the stair placement. Does anyone have any suggestions on a better placement for the stairs? We don't need the master to be so big so we can reconfigure that. One thought was to have them going down next to the stairs going up (instead of the playroom storage) but we don't really know what we are doing! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Sara A: Get yourself an architect! They'll be able to provide design solutions based on your individual needs and style. On a first impression, it looks alright to me. It seems pretty long for a stairway between two storeys however. Also, is there a reason the addition isn't flush with the wall of the original house? **Q: Exterior paint scheme** *(in Paint)* Help choosing color for this spanish style house exterior, if you think we need to remove elements or add its greatly appreciated your advice, the tile roof color will be more orange than in the picture, thank you! A: I would stick with pastels, especially on stucco/adobe. If you're going to make the roof more orange, you can go for a desaturated exterior. You can also add shutters as colour accents on the exterior which might help. **Q: Help, too many windows and where to put bookshelves? New construction** *(in Home Decorating)* As you can see from attached images there's almost no wall space, so where can we put our hundreds of beloved books? Also might like some kind of cozy reading nook in LR, and we sort of forgot about that, too. This floor plan picture shows the LR (great room), which has a shed roof, which has taller end near bank of sliding doors (with windows above in yellow). That wall faces the view, but has no room for bookshelves. The ceiling has exposed wood beams and a big i-beam going the other way, as shown. The fireplace is 11 ft at base and slopes up and is stone. The wall at top of picture is a possible location but the barn door burns up 4' 6" of wall to the right. House is currently being framed so we have time to plan for built-in bookshelves or portable shelves. As you can see the kitchen is adjacent to LR and with no walls in-between. At lower right is a second main-level bedroom & powder. The DR has no wall, except about 3 feet. Ideas welcome!! Thanks A: You could try looking into furniture that has storage built into it. I've seen a few lounge chairs with spots below for books. But 100s of books might be hard! What about above the fire place? It seems to play into the cozy nook idea you mentioned. Plus in the event of an emergency, you have an abundance of firestarters! (Just Kidding!) **Q: La Cornue Color Options** *(in Appliances)* Hi all, we need to decide on a La Cornue 36" range color choice TODAY (okay, maybe we have until tomorrow but that's it!). I'm confused on the color options between Pure White, Blanc White, and Ivory. It seems like some websites (looking at you Williams Sonoma) use stock photos interchangeably between the three color options. We have very white cabinets, so thinking Pure White is our choice, but the interchangeable photos are confusing me. If anyone has experience with these colors in person, would love to hear from you! A: Hi Priya, It would be nice to get a picture of your cabinets. Looking over on Cornue's website, http://www.lacornueusa.com/build-your-own, you can see that the "pure white" is actually blue off white. From what I can see (even comparing the two side by side) Blanc and Ivory are the exact same (perhaps the finish texture is different). I would recommend maybe looking into something that contrasts?
