> Can't say enough about Patrick! My wife and I were looking for a contractor to replace our original fiberglass shower/tub combo and replace it with a large walk in shower. Patrick completed an estimate that we were happy with as it was very reasonable compared to other contractors. We showed him the layout/concept we were looking for and the end result was nothing short of awesome. This project was upstairs and care was taken to protect our flooring and stairs on the daily. Clean up was performed daily with minimal impact on daily living. Patrick was always courteous, returned phone calls in a timely manner, always answered questions and kept us updated on the status of the project. He handled any changes very well and listened to our ideas and made it happen. Our particular project from demo to completion was 3 weeks. Thanks again Patrick!

**Q: Giant windows dilemna** *(in Home Decorating)*

We have these giant windows in our family room - we love the view of the covered patio and yard. We don't like the view of the gutters and roof. We just moved into this house and are rehabbing - what do we do for these windows? Currently there are blinds top to bottom - probably original to this 1999 house.

**Q: Advice for pendant light over kitchen island** *(in Lighting)*

We are renovating our kitchen and I would like to ask some advice for the pendant light that I am thinking of installing over my new kitchen island.
The island dimensions are 9’ x 4’. I have vaulted ceilings with a support beam that we have had to work around. 
I would like a few pendant lights but due to the support beam, I think I can only put one. Since there are so many angles in the kitchen, I thought that an oversized dome light might be a good option to soften the angles. But what size?
Any other suggestions or insights would be appreciated.

A: It's so unfortunate that, you have that beam there. If a dome size light is what you're looking for I'd go with a 23-27 inch dome. Other than that, i would use something similar to this picture.

**Q: What should be in the bid?** *(in Remodeling)*

My husband and I have been working with a design build firm for 9 months. We told them staying in our (significant) budget was our \#1 priority.
When the bid came in, it was 128% over budget.
Ok. We regrouped. Removed a lot of big ticket items, as well as some medium and small things.
Went back today, we are still 50% over budget.
But they won't tell us what anything costs. So when we ask "how much are the kitchen cabinets" the answer is "about $100k". Why can't you tell me exactly how much? When we ask how much the room addition is, they can't (won't) tell us.
Listen, we know they mark things up. We're not asking "how much is that light fixture". But to make informed decisions we need information. We've cut everything we can cut without more info.
And the original set of cuts didn't have the impact I expected given the way they have spoken about some other pricing.
I am having a hard time with the idea that I'm supposed to spend this kind of money without insight into how it's being spent.
So the question is - are we out of line to expect some detail on the bid? Or are we out of luck? If we are out of luck, then how do we make sure we aren't being ripped off? Because most of the firms in our area that do whole home remodels seem to be design/ build only and getting competing quotes seems impossible.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

A: Does the designing firm provide a layout? I honestly would contact a contractor. we typically work with designers to get a better visual of what the customer is looking for. yes its longer to provide a detailed quote but many contractors are willing to do it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to know exactly where your money is being spent.

**Q: Kitchen flooring** *(in Flooring)*

Any ideas about what you think of our present vinyl kitchen floor and what we might replace it with? Type of flooring? Color? Will the present floor not work? When we remodeled the kitchen, we did not change the flooring.

A: Not sure what state you're in but here in California Vinyl Flooring has been having many issues with the clips, perhaps laminate would be a better choice. I think this color flooring would look amazing in your home.
