I hired him around October 2013 as my architect for our 2nd home in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. This project was something I thought about for years. Financially, I could afford to build this second home but I definitely could not afford any major setbacks. I would simply not recover from that. I really don't think I could have hired a better architect. > > The property is unique- it is for a single residence but 60% of the lot drops down into a canyon (gradual 30% slope) and is unfit for construction. The set back requirements made this lot almost impossible to design on that fit my needs, budget, and building rules. Brad was the perfect architect to handle these difficult constraints. > > He placed the home far enough away from the canyon ledge and just inside the set back requirements such that it all fit exactly as it should. He captured the beauty of the canyon, kept it safe, and made the canyon feel like it's part of the house. My house is available for short term rentals and so far every single review emphasizes the simple beauty of the house and its canyon feel. He also angled the house so, should next door neighbors build, I will mainly see the canyon, not them. He also preserved large trees and framed one of the mountain peaks from a guest bedroom. These are but a few examples of the many details Brad captured in his design that make the house superb. His design is contemporary that likely will never go out of style. It's rugged and open. It's a textbook example of designing to fit the land, atmosphere, and client's preferences. I live in Texas, Brad in Colorado, so our design communication model was I sent Brad pictures of about how I wanted the house to feel and waited for his feedback. We did this several times and he quickly designed EXACTLY what I envisioned but with even better features. I don't think there's 1 square foot of wasted space. I heard that same comment from the builder, his sub contractors, inspectors, and most important, me and my friends. > > I was a bit nervous about this since I had never built from the ground up. Brad is very patient and thorough. I called him often, we talked through a lot of things. He also has a builder's background because his father is a very reputable builder. That helped in other building choices I needed to make later. He's also quick on his feet when he needs to be, as we made a few small last minute tweaks. > > Even when Brad was contractually done he took my calls, guided me through the process. He was both on time and on budget. To this day I talk with Brad on occasion. He is a thorough communicator. He's prompt. He's smart, logical, and will give you honest feedback so that you don't make bad choices.
