The brick is uneven and unsightly in the area where we removed the hearth. We are looking for ideas on how to cover it - matching tile from hearth or other ideas? We plan to paint the entire fireplace (it extends into the room about eight inches) a medium grey. Thinking either complimenting or matching tile color. It is wood burning but we don’t plan to use it. What do you all think about how best we can modernize the fireplace, heart and surround area. Thanks. Visuals always help us help you. **Q: What to do with outside stairs to front door?** *(in Paint)* Hello, had our house painted and can’t decide what to do with the front stairs but they need to be re stained or painted. What would be the best color scheme? I don’t have any way to remove the stairs or redo them at the moment. Lots of people always comment about how many stairs we have which does bother me so I can either try and make them blend in or just embrace that they are there and make them nice. Ideas please!! Thank you so much! A: Hi David, you have a beautiful landscape and home. I realize right now you want to fix the stair color but the moment I looked at the picture, I saw stepped landings at different levels to take you to the front door. It would meld into the existing terrain, a gradual few steps, then a landing continuing with additional steps all the way up to the front door area. Absolutely leave the tree and continue up to the front door. Then, remove the railing and incorporate a clear exterior glass or plexi-glass in place of the spindles. It will totally open the approach area. It would take a bit of grading and a couple of additional retaining walls (small and short) to accommodate the landing but oh my, when you are finished, it would be a show stopper. And then I would paint the front door some bold color; i.e. cherry red, turquoise. About the existing staircase, leave the stair treads natural stain (easier to navigate) and paint the handles or railings the dark gray. Good luck. **Q: wallpaper with sloped ceiling?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just moved into a new home and I'm dying to put wallpaper on the wall behind our bed. See inspirational image. The problem is that the wall behind our bed has a slightly slanted ceiling. Everything I've read about decorating a room with slanted ceilings says if you put a strong color on a wall with a slanted ceiling it will make the room feel smaller. The wall across from where the bed is currently located doesn't have a slanted ceiling. I suppose I could put the wallpaper on that wall across from the bed (where the entrance to the room exists) but part of me wishes I could see the wallpaper right away when I walk into the room. There's also a master bath in the room and I thought I could put the same wallpaper in there. Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? P.S. Please disregard the random furniture. We're planning to change all of it. A: Wallpaper on slanted walls is wonderful. And doing a coordinating paper in the bath will be perfect. Watch your match drop measurements, especially if using very expensive paper. For example, a 27" match would waste a lot of your precious paper. Send us a picture when you finish. Have fun. **Q: refinish with chalk paint or not?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I would like to keep this console but it needs refinishing. My dining room is my desired Asian inspired room. I like the room. What about using chalk paint. And if so, what color? I have included other parts of dining room so u can get my taste. A: Sherry, I quite like the bit of imperfection on this console table. Your Asian room is so regal, I personally think it does not detract. And in any impeccable room, a little imperfection helps your guests relax. I would not paint this table black or red. With Chinese traditional red, it would become a focal point in your room and you would need to change your flower arrangement in the corner. With the darker wood on your dining table and chairs, the black would just be another dark piece of furniture. Leave the console as is, then find a couple of silk slide in cubes or poofs to fit under the console in either a brighter hue or perhaps a bitter gold similar to the background color in your wall pictures. Try moving your blue hurricane candles to the console, they are too predictable in your beautiful room; elevate one hurricane on one or two glass blocks so that it is taller than the other. A third slender glass or brass vessel lined with moss and filled with some wispy, tall oriental grass could make a great arrangement with the candles. Place all three together, to one side. The art work above the console is intricate and busy so any arrangement needs to stay simple. You could add an off-white textured/nubby runner to cover the top of the console if you really cannot stand the finish. I also thought you could add a piece of glass, mercury glass, gray smoke glass, black or mirror glass cut to fit the top. I think you have quite a few options to maintain the integrity of the piece and still update to get the look you want. You might also call Henredon's customer service and ask their advice. Good luck. **Q: 8 ft pantry door in 9 ft kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* I think a 6'8" door would look too short and fat, but my builder thinks the 8 footer would look too tall and skinny. What are you thoughts? The rest of the doors in the house are 6'8" but the kitchen cabinets go to the ceiling. It's a corner pantry like the one in this photo. A: I have a corner pantry, walk-in and I love it. There is a 6 raised panel door with two raised panels above, like a transom and all mill work surrounds both door and decorative panel, as one unit. This treatment makes the whole door/panel much taller to match the cabinet height. **Q: door wall** *(in Photo Questions)* Fabulous unique bath - can you please give the resource for the industrial window wall w/door.
