We would like to open it up but are having trouble figuring out how to open up while still keeping function as an entertaining space (e.g. TV and not totally weirdly placed furniture). I don't know if you were also planning to open up that room or retain that structure for some usable wall space. Natural lighting is great -- but the windows do limit usage of the walls. So many tricky considerations to this project! **Q: Wall cutouts!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have three wall cutouts in my foyer that I have no idea how to decorate. I am considering adding a whitewash bench with some antique pillows below the middle one. My house has a rustic farmhouse feel. Help! A: A completely different idea from those listed above -- if you have a collection of anything, use these insets as display cases! These can hold small shelves with miniature figurines, framed coins, travel memorabilia, or even Lego minifigures. (Had to throw in an idea for any grown up boys who still love the plastic bricks!) **Q: Country or City??** *(in Polls)* Which do you prefer? country or city? Are cities just places for commerce, or do you really like them? Country living is really expensive. If you can achieve that dream, you never have to worry about the neighbors ugly place, rotten kids, or bad taste in exteriors and landscaping. A: Cities are terrific -- so much to do and explore -- many diverse settings -- tons of people so we can learn from others -- plus, cities are influential on surrounding areas! **Q: What To Do With Niches** *(in Design Dilemma)* This is our "new" winter home in Arizona. We are remodeling now. Kitchen cabinets have been painted ( they were honey oak). New Quartz and backsplash going in and new flooring. ANY suggestions on what to do with the large niches above cabinets? I am not a knick-knack person at all. I like clean, uncluttered look. These niches must stay. Ideas most welcome! Thank you! A: Oooooh...FUN! Adding drywall is wasted space. (I'm an organizer!) Adding doors provides lots of storage & nothing to dust. Open niches create space for showcasing your individuality -- Arizona history, antique cookbooks, family teapot collection, pottery, large floral arrangements, wine bottles, art, or simply "random" pieces that add fun splashes of an accent color. Here are a few examples for an inspirational springboard **Q: Hide shoes!!!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Any ideas of what I can put near the door to hide all the shoes A: My personal favorite is to hang a shoe rack inside the door; however, there is often a family member (or three!) who feel that it's just waaaaaay too much work to open the door to find or return shoes. Another option may be to place a mid-height, narrow accent shelf to the left of the closet. You'd lose the lower half of your window, but you'd have a simple place for shoes to land where they aren't the first thing guests (or YOU!) see as the door opens. Place a unique, fun piece of pottery or vase on the top, and voila! Note: Be sure to have a small dish for coins, keys, etc. As soon as a surface appears, it's bound to gather "stuff" as people are on the go. **Q: Need help for my kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* I need advice on the kitchen counter top color for our farm house kitchen. The backsplash is a bright yellow hand made tile. Need to know which color will look good with this yellow tile for kitchen counter? Note- its an open kitchen and breakfast counter is between living room and kitchen. Please advice. Thanks, Smit A: Bet your farmhouse kitchen is cheerful and delightful! I'm curious what colors you have in the adjacent living room. Are there any fabrics or unique accent items you'd like to have more attention? Feel free to bring a pillow or quilt or pottery piece from the living room to your yellow tile to get a feel for what color might capture your heart. Will it be a mellow, blend-in kind of look?
