**Q: Please help with living room cohesion?** *(in Home Decorating)*

We recently had bookcases made for our living room - fulfilling a longstanding dream.  I love the bookcases and how the reading nook feels, but the new arrangement makes the living room space feel very disjointed.  These photos show our living room from many angles - open door leads to our bedroom, blue chair areas is dining, and can also see front door.  I am open to new rug, different chair than the green one, re-arranging anything, and will buy a new couch in 3-4 years (in case the solution is new couch).  Also, please excuse the holiday decor on the bookcase.  It has finally stopped snowing here, so I am ready to put it away.

We love the inside of our home but cannot look past the plain vanilla (I.e., boring & flat) exterior.

**Q: Brainstorming exterior options for a 120 year old home** *(in Landscape Design)*

I would love some ideas on taking the exterior of this home built in 1900 to the next level. I would like to stay away from ultra modern and stay a little more true to the homes integrity. We will be removing and rebuilding a new porch so the existing one is not much of a factor. We will also be adding a small single story addition along the back side that I would like to coordinate as much as possible. Please toss out any ideas you may have!

A: aviastar, I like your concepts. but I would do a straight, wide walkway, and enclose the yard with a hedge rather than line the walk.  And put the mailbox near the walk....

**Q: Help, what do we do to make the front more appealing** *(in Landscape Design)*

Hi, we are after ideas to make these arches and front more appealing. We do not want to render (the bricks are too textured to make it worth it). We will remove the garden at the front. Any and all ideas will be so appreciated as we are just stuck with no ideas. Photoshop would be amazing and maybe another story if we choose to extend (up).

A: Move the palms, keep the "poodle" trees, add a patio...This is a really rough sketch, but gives the idea...

**Q: Help please, what do you think of this garden plan?** *(in Landscape Design)*

I posted in hillside garden forum...sorry to repost, but I could use advice. 
Sloping garden faces west.  25 ft across the top, with 4 ft drop, 9 ft on second wall then extends from upper corner about 32 ft. With a 5 ft drop. Retaining wall at the bottom. 
I had a designer make up this plan... but it seems very cramped.  I'm requesting low maintenance.

A: Plant the tree, and whichever 3 of the perennials you like.  Then fill in later if it seems too bare.

**Q: Stumped by 1970s Colonial. Help!** *(in Landscape Design)*

We had architectural plans for redoing the entire house, including adding reverse gables & a portico, but it turned out to be cost prohibitive. Now we are stumped as to what to do to the house to make it more attractive. The budget is healthy, just not limitless. We think we should do a new roof, windows, siding, trim, front door, gutters, soffits, column wraps to beef them up, porch (the brick is buckled up), new driveway w/belgian block edging, garage door, stair case to side door, & landscaping. If we plopped everything where it is now it'll look better, but probably not great. What bothers us most: the excessively linear nature of the house denoted by the pent roof, the way the front door/1st fl is buried under the large header, and the placement of the 2nd fl windows. We'd like the house to have more dimension/interest. I'm also not in love w/the shutters. Our style is transitional/modern farmhouse. Would black/bronze fiberglass windows (Marvin Integrity) paired w/red cedar polymer shake (Cedar Impressions) be out of place? Are there cost effective ways to improve the curb appeal and break up the long line of the house? Also are there any good apps or online designers/architects who will do a mock up to show us the potential for a reasonable price? I've only seen apps for changing the color. Thank you!

A: The landscape is part of the issue, but I think your biggest problem is the size and placement of the second story windows.  Look at these farmhouse pics:  What if you got rid of the shutters and replaced the windows with more proportional ones:or
