I was inspired to modernize the house and make it a "Smart Home" > > DSI was amazing. They showed me so many options at their demo room. The sales representative was very knowledgeable and I appreciated that they did not try to sell me any gear I did not need. They introduced me to the phrase "cost engineering" which allowed them to get the job(s) done in a specified budget. > > They brought in an electrician to install power where it was needed. > They installed a 70" Sharp Elite over the mantle with a custom built James Loudspeaker Soundbar for the front/L/R speakers. They put in 8" James Loudspeaker surround and rear speakers in the room. The picture and sound are absolutely amazing. The PS3 and my computer are also connected to the main room TV. They also installed a small TV in the kitchen and one guest room. > > They ran over 10,000 feet of cable throughout the house and wired all the rooms for TV or to be TV ready. > > We had a Crestron System installed with about 40 Crestron dimmers throughout the house. Now all of the downstairs, outside, and all hallway lights are remotely controlled through my iPhone and touch-panels. The Air Conditioning and Heating are also integrated. They were also able to specially engineer a control unit to our garage door to remotely open and close it, as well as let us know the opened/closed status. (This was a particularly important issue as our garage is detached from the house and the door would be frequently left open). > > They put all of the gear in a closet with a beautiful rack system. They had a power conditioner, battery back-up, and a robust Ruckus WiFi system all put into the rack. We powered the speakers with my Denon 5308. All 3 DirecTV receivers are also in the rack. They vented the closet to keep it cool. > > We plan on putting in a distributive sound system to power the speakers throughout the house in the upcoming months and all the gear will also go in the rack. I also plan on installing a 70 to 90" TV upstairs with a 5.1 surround system. > > The install work was top-notch. I was amazed at how clean they were despite all work that was done (the installer would often cut the drywall with a vacuum in one hand to reduce dust and mess). > > There were a variety of issues throughout the project. One example was the kitchen TV (22" Samsung on a swivel rack) broke and they simply replaced it. There were HDMI handshaking issues with the PS3 that they were able to troubleshoot and provide a work-around. When we wanted features added or removed with the Crestron remote they re-programmed it. They set up my wireless network and made sure my multitude of devices worked on it. > > The project was large and broken up over several months. They spent 2-3 weeks on wiring, 1 week on setting up the AV system, and another week for the lights/AC/garage. Because the installers who did the wiring knew my house better than anyone alive, I wanted them on the project throughout, which meant that the project took longer due to scheduling conflicts. If I needed something done by the end of the week though, they always completed critical issues before going on hiatus. (They always made sure I had working TV and internet). > > The job was more expensive than I expected because once they started working I expanded the project greatly, which tripled the cost, but that was at my direction. > > One way I hoped they could improve was with payment. It would be nice if they had an "installment or payment" plan to help spread out the cost from a cash flow perspective.
