40+ years experience in custom home design. Many styles and alternative building methods, off-the- grid homesteads, churches, temples, remodels and ADU's.

My name is Timothy Clark. I am the owner and principal designer at Home and Temple Design. Actually, I’m the only designer. I like to work closely with my clients and I find that the design yields the best results when I concentrate on it personally. I work with engineers, when necessary, to provide a complete architectural and environmental building design service.

My roots are in the coastal mountains of Northern California but I’ve designed customs homes, temples and retreat centers in many places including Nepal, India, Taiwan, Myanmar, Hawaii and Costa Rica. I have 15 years of experience in home construction and I’ve designed more than 300 buildings over the 40 years of my career.

> I highly recommend Timothy Clark at Home and Temple Design. Timothy is an excellent and very knowledgeable architect, and it is extremely hard to find someone like him.
>
> He is very familiar with building codes, rules, regulations, and the entire permitting and construction process. He is responsible, honest, kind, and very easy to communicate with. Whenever I had questions by email, text, or phone, he was always quick to respond and very helpful.
>
> His fees are also very reasonable, especially considering the quality of his work and level of professional service.
>
> I am extremely happy with the design and results of our new addition, porch, and living room. It was a pleasure working with Timothy, and I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, reliable, and honest architect.
>
> Thank you, Timothy, for all your great work!

> We live in a home designed and built by Home & Temple Design that has survived many a rainy nite and blazing hot days. The house is built on a hill and the design follows the changes in elevations with multiple rooms and a cement slab kitchen. The size of the home, with its many windows and views, gives it a much larger feel.
> A wonderful wood built home .

**★★★★★ — User, Aug. 2017**

> My wife and I had a great experience working with Tim from Home & Temple Design on our home studio project. Tim met with us several times to talk about ideas and different design options. Tim gave us good advise and was very patient.

**★★★★★ — Nikole Neidlinger, Aug. 2017**

> Tim did a fabulous job for us, in a tight time frame. We just purchased a new home, and knew what we wanted with the space it provided. Within just two weeks, Tim was able to create drawings and a site plan that got approved by the city for permit. HIs work was top notch, and efficient. He was within a totally reasonable budget, and less than other bids. He was easy to work with and quickly responded to us and made the changes we wanted on the drawings.

**★★★★ — Ted Kogon, Aug. 2017**

> Tim Clark has been very helpful and effective in designing for me a house, a cabin, and two Japanese fences. His fees were reasonable, often consulting without charge, and the results were very effective and aesthetic. He is an honest and intelligent man, very worth hiring.

**★★★★★ — Mehmet Cuhadaroglu, Aug. 2017**

> Your ideas have been coming to life nicely as we slowly re-built this 77 year Sunset District House. We are completely pleased with the outcome with natural lighting in each room, openness, columns, arches, kalwalls (skylights), the new bath and office, etc., turned out to be great.

**★★★★★ — Marilyn Drath, Feb. 2017**

> Tim Clark is very creative, artistic and has a good knowledge of building, carpentry and also engineering. He gets work done on time and is responsive. He has designed two of my projects. The first was a major remodel of a house in San Rafael, CA. The entire living room was torn down and a new living room and a huge master bedroom was added above the living room. The kitchen was completely remodeled as well. The remodel occurred in 2004-2005. The next project was the replacement of a carport and deck of a beach house in Inverness, CA. This project was completed around 2011. The cost of the first was around $350,000 with the second being about $60,000, including the permit.

  - Location: San Rafael, CA
  - Photos: 34
  - Description: I designed and hand-drew this house before the advent of computer drafting. All 28 sheets were hand drawn; over half of them construction details. It took me over a year to do the drawings. I also worked on the construction, from the 500' of retaining walls in the terraced foundation to the furniture quality roof. The design was the feature house for an issue of Fine Homebuilding Magazine and later was chosen for the “cover house” of Fine Homebuilding’s Great Houses hard cover edition on “Energy…
- [Mountain Top ICF](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mountain-top-icf-pj-vj~2631664)
  - Location: Napa, CA

  - Description: This 3 bedroom, 2 bath hilltop house has a 360 degree view with a lot of exposure to the weather. The walls are made using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF). The semi-attached garage/ shop and entry greenhouse define an entry garden. A large Kalwall skylight above the central stairway floods the center of the lower floor with natural light. The house is heated passively and with radiant floor heating in the lower floor concrete slab. There are trellises over the patios on the southwest side of the…

  - Location: Napa, CA

  - Description: This 2,200 sq. ft., 5 bedroom residence rests on a north-facing hillside. It was designed for a family of 7: a couple with 5 children. The clients had already leveled a building a site on a nearby hillside but I rejected that site because it appeared unstable. Sure enough, a large section of that hillside slid down the hill the first winter after the catwork was done. I much prefer designing the building before any grading is done. Even though the access was problematic. We chose the north facin…

  - Location: San Rafael, CA

  - Description: This house is situated on the edge of a flat to take advantage of the slope in order to put another story below the main floor. The client requested an octagon shaped house with a cupola at the top. The roof of the top floor and cupola are framed with rafters radiating from the center whereas the larger main floor has rectangular shed roofs on four sides alternating with triangular roofs in between. All of the ceilings have exposed, highly finished wood beams. There is hardwood or marble floorin…

  - Description: This home is off the grid, way out in the hills. Besides preparing the drawings for this post and beam hillside home, I ran the construction crew and worked as a carpenter. Except for the entry doors, all the wood used in the house was felled, milled and prepared on the site. The original house, shown in the photos, was 1,200 sf. The homestead was sold several years later and the new owners hired me to design a two story addition on the uphill side (see the last 3 drawings). Sorry, I never got a…

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: You can tell by the hand rendered drawings that this is one of my older projects. The hillside site, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was tricky. The street access was from the top and the usual way to handle the parking would be to put it "up in the air" with a bridge from the street. We wanted the whole house to be low profile - built into the side of the hill. Getting a driveway and turn around was a challenge. There are 3 levels to the house, all on ground level. This was accomplished by terra…
