Hired him to design a residential elevator for my home. We met him, liked him, wrote him a check for $6,000 which was half of his original fee. We signed his contract and he toured our home, inside and out including the garage. He came back the next day with his girlfriend to measure all areas. He had recommended an alternate design and I asked that he draw it up so I could visualize it. After several calls in December and one meeting that had to be cancelled due to a scheduling conflict we tried to contact him to no avail. Plans were delivered to the house with sketches for his alternate location, a sketch for a location which we never asked for which would have been impossible to accomplish, and no sketch for what we asked for. My husband reached him one time on his cell phone and he said he couldn't discuss our project and didn't know when he could. Our island is huge, but the lights feel gigantic. I think something smaller may get lost, but am looking to get other opinions! Thanks so much for any insight! The first two pics are from my home. I definitely need to get lower wattage bulbs. The third pic is the inspiration pic with the same lights. A: Nice lights, like the stepped cabinets, too, given the ceiling height. I believe the dimmer is a nice idea. Do you have under cabinet strip fixtures? Just a thought that a valance with a cable light above the upper cabinets would be a nice accent, if you so choose. Happy Houzzing. **Q: Deck before patio?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Which should come first, the deck or the patio? The deck will be about 5 feet off the ground and must wrap around the morning room (from the fireplace bump out). The space underneath will not be usable, however the entire area, to include additional footage, will be paved or cemented. I want to create a patio space next to the deck which will be right infront of the basement walk up. The space is kind of tight and the backyard begins to slope downward about 20 feet from the house. From the fireplace bump out on to the walk up, I want to utilize as part of the patio somehow. The deck stairs will rest on the patio. A: Gracia, Agree with above advice--design at the same time, perhaps you can implement them separately. Plan view and additional pics would help understand the entire context better. Happy Houzzing. **Q: Kitchen Design Dilemna** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have a 1980's galley-style kitchen that I want to remodel. I need more countertop space and I don't have enough storage. Any suggestions? A: Diane, I believe that your counterspace could be increased substantially by (partially) removing the half wall and the raised counter, and creating a 1' overhang on the other side of the modified half wall. which would allow the counter in that area to be as deep as 40" when not serving others--the eating bar portion may need to be sloped to the opening for the adjacent room. There are some other nice ideas, like removing the soffit above the cabs although that is largely cosmetic, unless you like dust bunnies, are taller than I so you can dust easily, or want additional storage and can afford it. If you can live with the rest of the kitchen functionally, this would be as simple as rebuilding the counter in one area, and replacing the counter surface in the adjacent areas. If the area allows, you could also extend the counter overhang 12" in the direction of the table, which would give you one additional placesetting, if not too crowded. Allow yourself 4' min. btw. the extended counter and the table edge--tight but workable. Happy Houzzing. **Q: Undermount sink with butcher block???** *(in Design Dilemma)* We would like to put butcher block countertops in our kitchen but are puzzling over the sink. Pros & cons for installing an undermount sink with butcher block??? A: The nature of wood being near a sink would require frequent re-sealing to avoid mildew/staining. Different species are heartier than others, but represent limitations in terms of species choice, and will still require frequent maintenance. Please consider implementing a design that will enable using stone in the sink area, while incorporating butcher block elsewhere. Happy Houzzing. **Q: Can we make changes to give this front porch/entry a better look witho** *(in Design Dilemma)* It's time to redo the front deck but I would like to make it look more inviting and appealing. Was thinking of added faux stacking stone. Any suggestions or pics of ideas are welcomed. Any ideas of how to make this happen without costing a fortune? A: I suggest that your first step should be a stop by the local building dept. Describe the project in general terms and learn about the zoning and bldg reqs. specific to your site. (i.e. how far forward of the existing structure are you allowed to build, what are the maximum structural coverage allowances for a parcel of your size. The project scope described above makes general sense, as the entry stair, columns and roof appear too tall and skinny for this facade. Stone can be a nice accent to a properly proportioned structure, but will over emphasize existing elements which aren't to scale with the rest of the facade. If you need help with some design ideas, plans and permitting, do not hesitate to work with a designer/architect. To quote an old axiom, "good work ain't cheap, and cheap work ain't good."
