What are the floor dimensions for this shed?

Can you tell me what species and also what stain is used for the siding?

A: Pacific Northwest Douglas Fir treated with Nelsonite clear large dimension lumber stabilizer "rocket fuel from Chicago".

**Q: Style** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm not 100% sure what style of house mine actually is.  I was told that it was an italianate style home.  It was built in 1885.  If I could get some more information on the style and also some exterior design ideas that would be much appreciated.  Thanks

A: This looks like an American Four Square, though interestingly, it doesn't have the front-facing dormer characteristic of these homes. Typically, Four Squares have two or more evenly spaced windows on the front elevation of the second floor. The first floor front elevation door and windows are also fairly evenly spaced, but not necessarily matching the placement of the second story. It appears that the front elevation of your home was altered at some point, replacing the front elevation second floor windows with a single centered one. It's possible the first floor was changed too, but I can't tell for sure. A good place to start with your exterior design would be to re-establish a more typical window pattern on the second floor. Even better if you can find evidence of their location by pulling back some of the siding. Here's a good resource for photos of Four Squares across the US:

A: The Secretary of the Interior has a published set of guidelines regarding the preservation and rehabilitation of historic property. Our company utilizes these to guide our work on historic properties. The guidelines call for compatible additions and a differentiation of new from old. We interpret this to mean something as small as a differentiation in materials or something as big as a modern addition. Both of the above options are equally interesting.
