A: Mike is correct, it would need steel and concrete. I usually recommend 12" at minimum. If you're putting lounge chairs on the shelf measure them and put the water 1-2" below that. If it were my house I'd do 12-15" of water. **Q: Water pools in driveway** *(in Design Dilemma)* What is the best way to tackle this? Does the existing asphalt have to be broken up and a new base put in, or can we just top it up over the low spots? A: Is this your driveway? If it is and if you have enough slope going from the lowest puddle point to the street then you can cut a 12" band in the the asphalt leading to the street and stub the drain at the street. This will take the water from the puddle to the street. **Q: Precast coping vs poured in place concrete for pool coping?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Not sure which way to go, pros and cons? A: Pro to precast: it is a strong material but limited in colors and finishes. Con to precast: Sometimes the measurements they take are wrong and the coping doesn't end up looking professional. Pro to poured in place: 2 options to the coping edge (bullnose or square edge). Many more color and finish options. If you do banding throughout the yard you can pour the same color to match everything. We always install poured in place coping unless the customer wants Travertine or Limestone coping. I hope this helps. Here is a poured in place pool picture in Malibu, CA. NOTE: if you install a salt system then precast is probably better. Salt eats away the cement in poured in place much faster and exposes the aggregates. **Q: Pool wall and landscaping suggestions** *(in Design Dilemma)* Here is the pool design so far. I am leaning towards a stacked stone veneer or glass tile for the 12in pool wall. The spa and bar/grill will be in stacked stone veneer. I'm feeling like I could do something a little bit more to the wall though make it really pop. Open to changing the wall completely so would like some suggestions. In addition, would like some landscaping ideas more on the modern side. I really like the cement squares with grass in between like the ones in the pictures...any idea where I should lay this out? We have a small yard... A: I agree with both Everything beautiful designs and Redbern. You can send the plan to anyone and they can design it for you. Redberns idea about the stepping pad along the deep end of the pool where the bubblers and pool eq area is good. You can install grass or artificial turf there for less maintenance. I would install a stone facing to the back raised all for more pop. There are many different styles and colors to choose from that will look great! 1 minute ago **Q: Need suggestions for feature tree behind our pool wall** *(in Design Dilemma)* Area behind wall of our pool is bare. There is a crape myrtle on the left and arbutus marina on the right side. In between behind wall are ceonothus bush. I feel like there should be some trees behind the wall or something with height. We live in Zone 9 central valley northern California. Any suggestions would be helpful. The area between pool and fence is only 5 feet. thanks! A: There are many different varities of Arborvitrae. If you can find the Holmstrup version that would be best. I would'nt go with the tallest growing one because it may 1) look too big and 2) look funny if you top it; unless you want to grow it into a hedge.
