For the longest time I had a hard time not being "normal." I graduated from a small liberal arts college, got a desk job, and hated every minute of it. In 2007 my life changed dramatically after hiking the entirity of the Appalachian Trail. It was a gut check in life and I'm lucky it happened when I was 27 and not 67. My time in the woods gave me a perspective on the benefits of simplicity. It was in the woods that I promised myself that I wouldn't spend a lifetime doing a job I didn't enjoy.
Thirteen years after hiking the trail I am blessed to own my own business and have never been happier. To be able to pay the bills while doing something that I am passionate about is one of the greatest things I have found in life. I'm lucky to have my wife Kim by my side as well as my beautiful daughters Vera and Lucy.

### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Judy, Jan. 2020**

> We had a great experience working with Dave, Adam and their extended team on two bathroom renovations. Dave is highly professional with an upbeat, can-do approach. He was very interested in quality work and ensuring we were happy with the results. So pleased we are looking to hire Dave again soon for a new project! Would highly recommend.

**★★★★★ — sabrina foulke, Jan. 2020**

> My experience working with Dave was great. He was professional, concerned for his client and his work was the highest quality..

**★★★★★ — Theresa Dryfoos, Jan. 2020**

> I have used Dave and his team for a number of renovation projects as well as a significant outdoor fencing project that needed to be subtle. In every case, i found them to have excellent ideas which are well communicated. They are professional, respectful, responsive and do excellent work. I highly recommend them.

> I worked with Dave, Adam, and Gary on my kitchen, and it was a great experience...
>
> I live in an older home, and wanted a vintage look...inset doors, cut-out details on the cabinet doors, old-fashioned latches, all wood cabinets, an adapted, antique dresser as a sink base...not the usual...and no one batted an eyelash. Everything was done professionally, the cabinets are beautifully made, and installed safely and securely (and absolutely no drama).
>
> The guys were very knowledgeable about building codes and safety...so they will keep you on the right track there, as well. I believe their pricing was very good, especially considering my somewhat quirky requests...
>
> The house is old, there is more work to be done, so they will be back...

**★★★★★ — Caulfield & Ridgway Inc., Oct. 2017**

> I have worked with Herrle Custom Carpentry on a number of projects.
> Dave has always gone above and beyond on any project, large or small. His attention to detail, creativity and professionalism is impeccable. It is clear he is doing what he loves to do.
> I would recommend him to anyone.

**★★★★★ — TJ Hollman, Nov. 2016**

> Its not often you can give 5 stars without even a hesitation. This is one of those cases. Dave completed 3 beautiful pieces for a project of ours including a beautiful bookcase that has been described by one friend as "that is just OMG". Working with contractors isnt always the easiest thing in the world but with Dave it definitely was. Great group to work with and talk thru projects and always concerned with making sure we were completely satisfied. Couldnt be happier with this partnership. Thanks Dave!

**★★★★★ — Kirsten Mckamy, Nov. 2016**

> From start to finish on this project, Dave Herrle was an absolute pleasure to work with. A great sense of humor and enthusiasm in an artisan are not requirements for a successful working relationship, but it certainly helped the whole process be infused with joy, Dave worked to bring my vision of a kitchen island (made entirely from spectacular reclaimed chestnut) to life (and exactly in timeframe he committed to). The scale and design are perfect. There is only one problem with it - it is so beautiful, I have a hard time leaving its side. In this age of homogeneity in all things,I also love that it is a one-of-a-kind piece that you won't find at Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware. Cannot not wait to work with Dave again on our next project. This man has PASSION and TALENT in spades!

**★★★★★ — onguig2000, Feb. 2016**

> Dave did an excellent job. His craftsmanship is superb. He and his partner are very professional and courteous and following the consultation and estimate, the job was completed in a timely fashion. I would highly recommend Dave. We are very pleased with his work.

**★★★★★ — Studio Paradis, Dec. 2015**

> I'm an interior designer, and brought Dave and Adam on to one of my residential projects. I was so impressed by their professionalism, attention to detail, and knowledge. When they said they'd get something done by a certain date, they delivered, and perfectly. Big bonus: They know how to work with design professionals. They will be my go-to team from now on.

**★★★★★ — Michael Schneider, Dec. 2015**

> This past winter I was looking for a wine rack for my kitchen. I contacted Dave about what I was looking for and we discussed the options. I was able to choose the type of wood (dark walnut) and I gave him an idea of what I was looking for with the design. When discussing the rack he was very energetic and made me feel like he was looking forward to the rack as much as I was. When I received the wine rack it was perfect. It was exactly what I envisioned and it looked great in my kitchen!
>
> Dave was great to work with and was professional throughout the process. He was able to take my idea and turn if into exactly what I was looking for. I would recommend Herrle Custom Carpentry for any projects you may have in your home and I look forward to contacting Dave regarding my next home project!

**★★★★★ — The Builder LLC, Dec. 2015**

> Herrle Custom Carpentry is one of the best construction companies on the Connecticut shore line. You find HCC to be extremely organized and talented!

> When looking for carpenters to design and install custom built-ins, a friend who owns a lumber company sent me a list of local carpenters. Dave and Adam were listed, and after phoning a few, Dave phoned within 24 hours, and from there on we knew we were going to hire them. They stayed within budget, met deadlines, and build us beautiful shelves surrounding our new gas fireplace. Awesome job!!!! Very professional, and better still, easy to reach via email when we have questions or concerns. Loved them, would definitely hire them again.

## Selected projects

- [Joshua Lane](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/joshua-lane-pj-vj~6025304)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 56
  - Description: This is an ongoing project for us. We completed the main house for Thanksgiving 2019 and are currently working on a pool, pool house, wine cellar, and barn. An unbelievable spot along the CT River that we are so fortunate enough to enjoy every day at work. Many more pics to come as this project develops!
- [Modern Industrial Kitchen](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/modern-industrial-kitchen-pj-vj~2737146)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Fully custom design build kitchen for some really awesome clients. Truly a one of a kind kitchen mixing raw steel elements, reclaimed oak, and top of the line modern appliances. Not to mention the terrarium on top of the breakfast nook...that turtle is living large!!
- [Custom Modern Bathroom](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/custom-modern-bathroom-pj-vj~1326088)
  - Location: East Haddam, CT
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: This bathroom was a huge challenge! This historic 1750's house had to be completely reworked to accommodate the second floor built in washer dryer and the curbless shower with hidden line drain. We built the teak vanity to accept the vessel sink and added a custom transom window with wave glass above the pocket door for extra character. The floating toilet with built in cubby above really adds to the modern feel of this once old house!
- [Custom In Law Apartment](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/custom-in-law-apartment-pj-vj~912022)
  - Location: Chester, CT
  - Photos: 26
  - Description: We took a three bay garage and gave it some love...a lot of love! We used all three bays upstairs and created a space that you might want to move into rather than giving it to your in laws! Full marble bathroom and a balcony, but the kicker is the hidden rotating bookshelf wall that divides the bedroom from the living space. Unbelievable project that kept us challenged throughout!
- [Joshua Lane Kitchen](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/joshua-lane-kitchen-pj-vj~6025272)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Open concept kitchen with a massive island! Walnut table at the end of the island serves as a baker's table. The countertop becomes the backsplash as the leathered granite countertops turn up the wall. Integrated sub zero fridge, miele dishwasher, miele wine fridge and Thermador range
- [Ct River Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/ct-river-addition-pj-vj~6003953)
  - Location: East Haddam, CT
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: This was a fun one! Our clients love their boat so we built a nautical themed sunroom addition complete with custom built teak couches. A huge slider provides great views of the river and the exterior is finished with a masonry patio and a rain chain rather than a traditional gutter.
- [Country Kitchen Renovation/Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/country-kitchen-renovation-addition-pj-vj~882930)
  - Location: Chester, CT
  - Photos: 23
  - Description: We completely gutted the existing kitchen and bumped out the kitchen by eight feet. We moved around a few interior walls to provide an open floor plan as well as make room for a 9ft walk in pantry! The concrete countertops came out great and they accent the farm sink and pendant light perfectly. Shaker style custom cabinets are mixed in with store bought units to add a nice touch without blowing the budget. By far my favorite part of the build was the walk in pantry with the cookbook built ins.…
- [Walnut game room](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/walnut-game-room-pj-vj~6025187)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 4
  - Description: We took an unfinished basement and turned it into an awesome game room complete with wet bar and custom ping pong table. Integrated into the cabinetry is a 24" sub zero fridge and a miele dishwasher.
- [Yale Barn](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/yale-barn-pj-vj~1430651)
  - Location: West Haven, CT
  - Photos: 26
  - Description: Right before my daughter was born in 2015 we were lucky enough to land a barn build for the Yale Agricultural Department on their West Campus. The 18x24 structure serves as an outdoor classroom and a facility for their urban farm. Can't believe we were chosen for such an amazing project! Inspiration at every turn during this once in a lifetime build :)
- [Recording Studio Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/recording-studio-renovation-pj-vj~883212)
  - Location: Chester, CT
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: We took a run down California style ranch in Chester and completed the renovations for the infamous Dirt Floor Studio! Reclaimed beams now support the ridge and provide an open floor plan. Custom steel work, cabinetry, and concrete counters all provide great accents to the amazing music that comes from this space!
- [A few recent bathrooms](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/a-few-recent-bathrooms-pj-vj~6025203)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 4
  - Description: As part of a much large project we got to remodel all of the existing bathrooms in the house. It's tough to pick a favorite but I love the basement bath that sports a bluestone floor that runs seamlessly into the shower with a hidden line drain.
- [Dining room wet bar](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/dining-room-wet-bar-pj-vj~6025237)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 2
  - Description: We took out a center chimney and made better use of the space with this new built in wet bar. Hand blown glass uppers courtesy of Jeff P'an studios in Mystic CT.
- [Sunroom addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/sunroom-addition-pj-vj~1511024)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 4
  - Description: You could live in this four season sun room! Copper Mendota fire place, stone floors, vaulted quad hipped ceiling with reclaimed beams...grab a book, an irish coffee, and relax!
- [Edwards Kitchen](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/edwards-kitchen-pj-vj~1639371)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 3
  - Description: We took this kitchen down to the studs and gave it a total facelift. The custom hutch on the end of the cabinet run might be my favorite part as it gives the space a distinct personality. The reclaimed chestnut island top provides another great contrast to the off white inset cabinetry. Speakers in the ceiling let you crank your tunes or listen to the under cabinet corner tv. Another fun project and fantastic clients!!
- [Wee House Tree House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/wee-house-tree-house-pj-vj~882818)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 23
  - Description: After a few too many glasses of wine on New Year's Eve, I promised my soon to be wife that I would build her a tree house on our property. We woke up the next morning and got to work. We had all the lumber milled locally...all the doors and windows came from salvage yards, and after six weeks of construction we had a house! It isn't our full time residence as we have another house on the property but it is the ultimate getaway that fuels our creativity. "Today is life, tomorrow never comes."
- [Reclaimed Chestnut Cabinetry](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/reclaimed-chestnut-cabinetry-pj-vj~883037)
  - Location: Clinton, CT
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: We outfitted this recreational room with a wormy chestnut bar and built in Miele Fridge. The chestnut made a long trip from South Carolina but now has a new home in Clinton. Inset doors and drawers all with top of the line soft close hardware. Time for a whiskey!
- [Dream closet](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/dream-closet-pj-vj~2746105)
  - Location: East Haddam, CT
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: If only I had a closet this cool! Each door has it's own LED light that is connected to a magnet switch so the light comes on as soon as the door is opened. Custom shoe rack and built in bench/laundry storage with a reclaimed walnut top.
- [Antiqued Walnut Tables](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/antiqued-walnut-tables-pj-vj~959657)
  - Location: Chester, CT
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: We put the finishing touches on an in law apartment that we remodeled by making custom black walnut tables to match the space. The main writing desk is a mix of the new and the old with the top made out of locally harvested walnut slabs while the framing and the legs are from an old resawn walnut beam. We antiqued the edges on the tops using a couple different techniques and finished all the tables with a furniture wax that gives it a satin luster. Happy client happy carpenter!
- [Tiny house](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tiny-house-pj-vj~883095)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 23
  - Description: We built this wee cabin for one of our clients who wanted a place to get away. We had all the wood milled locally and the simplicity of the structure allowed us to build it in just under six days. All of the windows and doors were salvaged from previous job sites...we hate throwing stuff away! The floor joists for the loft were all salvaged from an old barn on the property, it was great to find something so old and give it new life!
- [Timber Frame Horse Cover Barn](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/timber-frame-horse-cover-barn-pj-vj~883176)
  - Location: Lyme, CT
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: This simple timber frame in Lyme provides cover for the horses when the inclement weather rolls in. We had an absolute blast and perfect weather for this one. All of the timbers were milled locally...the siding was purchased at a local lumber yard and we fit nearly all of it on top of my Volvo 240!
