Maher & Greenwald is a Landscape Design and Garden Architecture company.  We are designers of private residences, public gardens and commercial properties throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties as well as the Hudson Valley.  

Design & Maintenance
We specialize in overall site planning and hands-on garden design, installation and restoration.  We also offer expert Maintenance Services on gardens we've designed as well as existing gardens and landscapes.  Our specially-trained crews are gardeners who know plants, shrubs and trees and how to properly care for them.

Landscape & Hardscape
As a Design-Build firm we work closely with our Clients, Architects and Engineers in siting houses and installing and developing all aspects of Landscape and Hardscape.  Our hardscape work includes everything from drive and tennis courts, to pools, patios and ponds.  

Gardens

> There was nothing fine about the experience with MaherGreenwald!

> With the beautiful photos and pleasant discussion we were promised quality, however the result and experience was the opposite. They landscaped an uneven lumpy lawn with a dip in the middle then tried to put in a drain to fix it. That did not work and we were left with a soggy uneven lawn and rotting grass. Still the architect kept saying everything was fine but it was clearly not, unless we had wanted a swampy bath instead of a lawn. The admin was also slow and frustrating, with long delays, hand written invoices with mistakes. After we asked for no more time to be incurred without our approval, this was ignored. They also did not obtain the proper permits in advance which we later found out and caused much stress.

> Carrie and Mark are both incredibly creative and thoughtful -- the design and layout reflected our more casual lifestyle ( kitchen and cutting garden, a patio transitioning from kitchen/family room to an expansive lawn with pool and pond) yet the unique and thoughtful plantings in each area of the property have an understated elegance - beautiful gardens that flower in stages during the summer and include unusual plantings. Equally important is that they stay with you over the years and tend your yard and gardens and they continue to evolve with the same thoughtfulness and care. They not only designed the original landscape but have been following up on the property for about 25 years! I especially like that if they do not like the stock quality at the nursery of their initial choices, they will suggest plantings which are in good health.

## Community Q&A

**Q: How do you get rid the weeds and keep them out?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I have a lot of briars, ivy, and bamboo..

A: 1\) Good, rich soil for planting
2\) It's in the shade, not too many weeds
3\) By hand, every 3 or 4 weeks
\[no chemicals, no fabrics\]

Would love a list of flowers used

A: Hello Ellen,

This pot contains Caladium (center), Sweet Alyssum (small white flowers), Diascia (pink flowers), Violas (lavender flowers), and I think I added Nemesia, and used a delicate Bird's Foot Ivy.

**Q: What are the two main plants in the front row (on the left)?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I'm especially interested in the plant closest to the bottom of the picture with the broad green/white leaves.

A: Hello Ham913! Thanks for stopping by.
The plants in the foreground right, are a species Hosta which means an old original. It's name is Hosta undulata var. undulata. This one would be hard to find as thousands of Hostas have been hybridized since this one's glory days. What made it so attractive, as you can see, are the twisted leaves and the large central white to cream zone in the leaves.
If you were to find it, the somewhat updated versions might be called:
Hosta 'Argentia Variegata'
H. "Mediovariegata'
H. "Variegata'.
I don't see these around but if you'd be interested in a newer green and white that would be easy to find, may I make some suggestions?
H. 'Loyalist'
H. 'Revolution'
Also ask you nursery for somethng similar to these that you might look at.
