For 23 years and more than 300 projects, we have designed and built homes across Toronto and the countryside beyond it.

We are a design-build studio, which means one team carries a project from the first conversation to the last site visit. There is no handoff between the person who designed it and the people who build it — and so no gap for a project to fall into. When something needs solving on site, the people who drew it are the people solving it.

You work directly with us throughout. Not with a project manager assigned after you sign.

We provide comprehensive design and construction management services. Our designers collaborate on every project and work closely with our build team to ensure that the design intent is maintained at each stage. We treat construction as a natural extension of the design process.

We have established relationships with engineers, architects, and planners that we regularly consult with. This enables us to provide our clients with the infrastructure necessary for their projects, while maintaining the personal contact and versatility of the small studio.

Roundabout’s principals come from diverse professional backgrounds in the fields of carpentry, finance, science, animal care, and software development. The collection of these varied experiences brings a broader perspective to the studio’s practice. We understand design as not just a decorative layer, but an intrinsic element of landscapes, objects, rooms, and structures.

Our design style is process-based, and we create projects based on the relationships we have with our clients. Each project is rooted in an understanding of our clients, which informs the intentions of that particular design. We design for people, creating visually interesting spaces that also function to improve the way those spaces are lived in.

### Featured Review

**★★★★★ — David Jonas, Nov. 2020**

> My wife and I really enjoyed working with Roundabout Studio. We not only found the owners and staff to be very responsive when we had questions, but their creative design solutions were excellent.
> Our project objective was to reimagine our existing 50 year old home. Tear it down or renovate?
> The first thing Roundabout suggested was to create a master redesign plan of our existing home. From that point Roundabout produced design drawings for every part of our home, including the exterior. The process was quite seamless, but when a problem developed, the design team came up with a solution. Usually the problem was solved without causing any additional monies. While this was not always the case, it has to be expected when you're renovating a 50 year old home.
> To this day, people still stop and comment on how beautiful our home is.
> We have recommended Roundabout to many friends and clients.

> There may have been thousands of semi-detached homes in Toronto like ours tucked into a corner of the Upper Beach, but after our project with Roundabout, it's now one-of-a-kind. We brought Roundabout in to completely renovate our main and upper floors, desiring better flow and function where our current home lacked. From layout conception to the entire construction journey, Roundabout was a welcomed partner. They creatively help us solve the unique design challenges of our 110 year-old home, provided sound guidance and direction as we discovered our own aesthetic preferences, and problem-solved exactly how we needed them to when the ills of previous renovations showed themselves. We couldn't recommend the team at Roundabout Studio enough!!

**★★★★★ — Traditional Hardwood Flooring Ltd., Dec. 2020**

> We have been working with Roundabout Studio for the past ten years. The firm is well known for its extraordinary, high-quality projects. They think outside of the box, which gives us new opportunities to improve our skills and sail uncharted territories in our trade.
>
> They provide excellent service to their clients and make us proud to be a part of their team. Along with great work, they are well organized, very clean, will meet or exceed your expectation, are loyal and create long-lasting relationships.
>
> As a subcontractor, it is my pleasure to work with Roundabout Studio and look forward to continuing to provide our services to a professional and respected company such as theirs.

> It's a pleasure for us to work with you. Looking forward to our next project!

**★★★★★ — caroline\_robbie, Nov. 2020**

> We were delighted with the integrated design and construction services offered by Roundabout Studio. They provided a variety of phased options for us to do renovations that would fit our schedule and budget. The renovation of our kitchen has made it our preferred location in our house. The construction crew was knowledgeable and punctual. Things happened when they were promised and the workmanship was of the highest quality. I have recommended them to many of my friends and colleagues.

**★★★★★ — HU-527017994, Nov. 2020**

> I've worked with Roundabout Studios for a number of years on many different projects. Always very professional and pleasant to work with. They have a special knack for providing clients with stunning spaces while maintaining excellent customer relations. I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

**★★★★★ — K Vermond, April 2019**

> "Wow, I feel like I've walked onto the pages of a magazine."
>
> That's the comment we hear most often when friends and family come to visit our home, newly redesigned and renovated by Roundabout Studio. (That, and, "Do you have their card?")
>
> And no wonder. Daniel Harland, Nate Fisher and the Roundabout team have done a phenomenal job taking a typical, cramped, 90-year-old downtown home and turning it into a beautiful, light and airy living space that seems to shine even on cloudy days. We actually weren't sure what we wanted to do with our home in the beginning, but Nate spent time asking questions and reading between the lines to create renderings that combined creativity and functionality. Our home wasn't so much about building more square footage, but re-imagining the space we have. Roundabout excels at contemporary yet livable design. Gone is our cold, dark attic with its dangerous stairway. Now we have a bright, warm family room and home office. The first floor is ready for entertaining -- and the kids no longer fight about who has the bigger room. (They're both \*exactly\* equal.)
>
> After the design stage, Roundabout worked on hiring a great, experienced and friendly building crew, securing numerous building permits, recommending finishes and fixtures, consulting on colours, and problem-solving for all the challenges that are inherent to working on older homes. Many times we felt guilty when talking to so many friends with home reno horror stories because our home renovation just seemed so...easy. That was no doubt due to Roundabout's professionalism and customer service.
>
> Whether we were asking them to move a whole wood-burning fireplace 18 inches to the right, adding a hot tub to the upstairs deck off the master bedroom, or installing a kegerator in the kitchen for parties, Nate and Daniel said, "Sure, we can do that." And then they exceeded our expectations. Meanwhile Gary Westwood walked us through the contract point by point and checked in along the way if there were changes.
>
> Would we hire Roundabout Studio again? In a heartbeat. Do we recommend this design studio to others? Absolutely. Our home has changed -- and our lives have too. Wonderful job!

**★★★★★ — Cynthia Waldow, Sept. 2016**

> I hired Roundabout Studio to design a 3700 sq ft home for my family on a rural farm. They did a wonderful job of creating our modern farmhouse. They were available throughout the project and prompt and often knew the answers before I or the tradespeople asked the questions. I would highly recommend them.

**★★★★★ — Chris and Leslie Townsend, Aug. 2016**

> For most of the past year it’s been our turn to welcome the Roundabout Studio Inc.-Old Soul Carpentry Club team into our lives. We enjoyed the same experience (project details apart) described so thoroughly by sgayton below.
> Our tastes are modern and our house is old, full of quirks and character and, it turned out, structural deficiencies. Roundabout and Old Soul completely gutted our hundred-year-old semi and returned a solid, light-filled, airy house with its structural problems addressed. There is something to delight on every floor. The team understands both modern aesthetics and old houses. They knew where to splurge and where to save to deliver the brief and stay within our budget. They were the right team for our project. We’re thrilled with our “new” house.

**★★★★ — sgayton, March 2016**

> We welcomed Roundabout Studio Inc. and Old Soul Carpentry Club(OSCC) into our lives for many months. It is a bizarre experience to work with strangers so intimately and then to be abandoned never to be seen again. Fortunately before the team left, they had completed a renovation project that far exceed our expectations. The only tears that were shed during the project was those of joy when Jo Ann's mud room phase was completed. Those with young children can understand the importance of such a space.
>
> We hired Roundabout to design, budget and manage the build. The boys at OSCC renovated the house. Our renovation consisted of a new exterior look to the house including Cape Cod style Maibec siding, beautiful Eramosa stone masonry new windows and a porch. The interior renovation was a complete gut which included an open concept design in addition to a new bathroom, kitchen, dining room and stairs. We also added a new lighting scheme, paint, fixtures, shelving and some modifications to the bedrooms. Our strategy was to create a livable space for four in a bungalow where entertaining would never be an issue again. Roundabout handled all the details through a well constructed plan from start to finish while keeping us involved and educated on a weekly basis. They were always available for questions or concerns at any time. Professional, intelligent, patient and courteous to say the least. The bulk of the build(95%) was completed in four months. The rest of it was much longer, but understandable. Weather, scheduling, sub-trades and permit confusion were the main reasons. Roundabout designed and budgeted for the build before we even broke ground which curbed the surprises and anxiety levels. Aside from a few hiccups that was beyond our control, it was completed on time and within budget.
>
> The OSCC team are very skilled tradesmen with an artistic design focus to their work. They were also very respectful, tidy and we did not experience one complaint from the neighbours. Anyone that visits, admires the work that has been done. The two companies work very well together and I would highly recommend welcoming the entire group into your home to complete your dream renovation.
>
> Visit their website for pictures of the project and give them a call. It is hard to describe their work in a few paragraphs.

**★★★★★ — Kathleen McLachlan, May 2014**

> We worked with Roundabout Studio to renovate our home. When meeting with the principal Daniel, we felt most comfortable when he outlined his schematic plan for renovating in stages. We decided upon getting all of the work done at once, but appreciated that he was willing to work within our original budget and within time constraints.
>
> We achieved a home of which we were proud, in collaboration with Roundabout. We would not hesitate to work with Roundabout in the future, and have referred them to friends and family.
>
> Kathy McLachlan

**★★★★★ — howardbarr, May 2014**

> We've used Roundabout on several major projects in our Victorian house. All the trades people they utilized were professional, pleasant and tidy. The more specialized craftsman were true artists and showed genuine passion for what they did.
> As we expected as owners of an older home there were unexpected challenges which were handled with efficiency and candor.
> Home renovations are seldom fun but Roundabout certainly made the experience a significantly less daunting and stressful process.

**★★★★★ — Anthony Concrete Design Inc, Oct. 2013**

> The team at Roundabout are professional and great to work with. Their attention to detail is amazing. We were able to come up together with a great working solution for a custom concrete fireplace surround. It compliments the space beautifully and we LOVE their style and aesthetics. Can't wait to work with them again!

**★★★★★ — Tiltco Architectural, Oct. 2013**

> Create amazing and unique spaces.
> They have an eye for color and texture, shapes and large spaces.
> Great group to work with.

**★★★★ — GW, July 2013**

> My neighbor hired them to do a renovation project and referred them to me. Have not used them yet but referrals are the best way to this type of work!

 - Location: Toronto, ON
 - Photos: 13
 - Description: Set within a semi-detached, double-brick Toronto home, the Rathnelly House transforms a narrow Toronto lot into a sequence of quiet design moments — each one stitched together by natural light. Warm oak and crisp white surfaces dissolve the walls, lending the interior a feeling of weightlessness. At the heart of the home, a custom floating oak staircase rises without a single piece of structural steel: pure joinery, mortised connections, and accumulated craft holding a self-supporting span in mi…

 - Location: Toronto, ON

 - Description: This expansive Victorian home arrived with a rare gift — decades of careful stewardship had preserved its tall windows, graceful trim, and intricate plaster mouldings largely intact. The renovation was designed to honour what remained, weaving contemporary functionality and refined style into the existing fabric of the home without disrupting its inherent character. The result is neither strictly heritage nor strictly modern, but something more enduring — a home of timeless grace that feels as t…

 - Location: Toronto, ON

 - Description: The stellar views from the as-yet-built condo were never in doubt, but it was equally important that the interior space complement the owner’s lifestyle. The design of the unit needed to provide a suitable backdrop to showcase the owners' extensive contemporary art collection, without sacrificing the comfort of the home – a space where they could relax at the end of a hectic day. The end result was an elegant, contemporary home, one where every element contributed to a cohesive and highly-curate…

 - Description: The natural and calming beauty of this expansive former-commercial soy field first attracted these clients to the property, inspiring them to create a homestead for their young family. Working in the context of this setting, Roundabout Studio was tasked with reimagining the classic farmhouse. The goal was to design a home in harmony with its natural surroundings, while offering the owners a space that better suited their contemporary lifestyle. The result is an open gathering place for extended…

 - Location: Toronto, ON

 - Description: For more than half a century this site was home to Cruickshank's, a neighbourhood fixture and much-loved flower bulb distributor. Seeing an opportunity to revive the site and create a house with a meaningful presence on the street, the owner commissioned Roundabout Studio to convert the connected yet disparate buildings into a single, cohesive new home. A unique space was created: its staggered levels giving interest to the open-concept layout and the owner’s love of music being embraced through…

 - Location: Toronto, ON
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: The owners reached out to Roundabout Studio to design an outdoor space that would match the striking, minimalist lines of their home. Green space in the middle of a busy city is not something to be taken for granted. The resulting design made the most of the once overlooked backyard, creating a versatile outdoor entertaining space with unconventional design elements.
- [High Park House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/high-park-house-pj-vj~2191801)
 - Location: Toronto, ON
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: This North High Park home had not been updated since our client first bought the house. But now, with the kids grown and moving out, it was time to renovate. The work involved a complete gut of the house, with a small third storey extension. There was an emphasis on natural light and a muted palette with a focus on materials. The design improved the function of the house and created a visually interesting space more aligned with the couple’s aesthetics.

 - Description: Although considerably new, this house was built in a very traditional style that clashed with our client’s more modern aesthetic - specifically, their large contemporary art collection. However, the home’s expansive rooms and elevated ceilings offered the ideal canvas to showcase this impressive collection. When Roundabout began working on this project, we knew the design needed to establish a connection between these display spaces and the surrounding areas. This was done with the use of millwo…

 - Description: Situated on a historic avenue, this Victorian house was filled with charm, but its interior lacked functionality. Our clients have young children, and the design needed to be compatible with the realities of their lifestyle. While they wanted a space that reflected their own design preferences, they prioritized creating a place in which their children felt at home - nothing was made too precious. ## Community Q&A

**Q: The blk. bar stool’s at the island. where to find and the name pls.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautiful Job,would like the name and where to find those gorgeous blk. Bar stools at the kitchen island. Thank you.

A: Hi there, thanks for the compliment, it's always appreciated! As for the bar stools, the project was completed several years ago, and we can't seem to find the source for that. It's possible the owner sourced the stools himself. We're still in touch, and can bring it up with him next time we speak, which actually should be in the next week. Cheers!

**Q: Who made this stair please? It is quite lovely!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Inquiring about who made this lovely stair! ??

A: Hi there. Thanks for your comment, and we're proud to be able to say that we designed, prototyped, and built it ourselves, along with site carpenters, a millwork shop, and a glass supplier.

**Q: What brand is the tub?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thanks for for comment about the tiling! However, to be honest, construction advice is not something we feel comfortable providing on our Houzz site, especially from a liability point of view.

**Q: Integrated tile flange?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Does this tub have the integrated tile flange on the two wall sides? Or did you use a field installed kit? We ordered wrong tub for our shower enclosure and are considering using a kit for the two sides along wall. Wondering if it's as reliable for keeping it watertight as factory bonded flange. Thank you.

A: Thanks for your question! The tub had integrated tile flanges on two sides. We haven't used the kind of kit you are talking about, so we really can't speak to that.

**Q: what model is the tub** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Ruth,

Thanks for the question. The tub is a 72" drop-in tub model, 'Pur' by Mirolin--here is a link to the spec: https://mirolin.com/product/drop-in-baths/pur/

**Q: Nice door, where is it from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thank you, glad you like the door! It wasn't a purchased door, we built it custom.
