I have a specific vision for the home, and the existing paint colors weren’t a good fit for the look and feel I want. I had purchased a lot of paint samples and wasn’t getting the results I thought I would when I actually tried the colors. Although I feel I have a good sense of design and even color, I find choosing paint colors is hard because you need to understand undertones and know the paint lines. I was concerned about finding a color consultant who would understand my vision and know how to help me achieve it through paint color. I had looked at several color consultants’ websites and didn’t get a sense that they used color the way I wanted to use it. Additionally, I had talked to some people locally, but they also didn’t understand my vision and seemed to suggest only “on-trend” colors. When I found Amy’s website, I was intrigued by the classic and historic homes she had worked on, her unique color choices and how well they worked in the spaces shown. At first I wondered if virtual color consulting could work, but when I had my call with Amy, I could tell she understood my vision, knew the paint lines well, and had a proven process for working with clients. Getting together the materials she requested helped me to better define my vision, too. When a choice had to be made between changing the existing trim color—and there is a lot of trim and millwork—and going with the colors I originally thought I wanted, or keeping the trim and going a different direction with walls, Amy helped me understand what the best choices would be. I chose keeping the existing trim and working with a different palette, and I loved the new direction even more than what I had originally had in mind. And it still fits my original vision for the overall look and feel of the house. And in the basement where we did new trim, Amy helped me chose a beautiful color that works with my upstairs colors. Additionally, I spent less money overall not changing all the trim, even though I worked with a color consultant. I would never have known to consider the paint colors Amy chose. Even my painters (who do a lot of very nice work in the area) were blown away by the beauty of the choices and details, like how painting the ceiling a particular color—not just standard ceiling paint—can look. One other benefit to using Amy was that I learned a lot about paint colors and lines during this process. The house has lovely woodwork and tall ceilings throughout and we were eager to get the main level and bedroom level painted. I had a one-hour consultation with someone who, while very nice, left me with sample colors that didn't feel right. I truly do not have a talent for color other than on a very broad scale. Luckily, my brother and sister-in-law were visiting and told me about Amy Krane.
