David Hotson was the architect and designer. The firm's designs throughout the home were stunning and unique. We were especially impressed with the level of detail and artistic talent. The completed townhouse was a work of art. The lines of the home were brilliantly planned. From a contractor's point of view, David and Mike were wonderful to work with as they made themselves available to discuss the project whenever needed. They have excellent communication skills which is especially important when completing luxury renovations and construction. They held weekly meetings onsite so that the project progressed smoothly and quickly. Their plans were detailed and very specific which saved a lot of time. David exceeded our expectations on all levels. From the very beginning he came up with an ingenious solution, reorganizing the loft to creating a beautifully proportioned living space and finding places for other amenities like a comfortable home office, a spatially dramatic and versatile sleeping loft for overnight guests, an ample laundry room, and a space-efficient children's bedroom with built-in bunk bed surrounded by bookshelves, a desk and a multilevel play area. Our children love it and so do we. But the best part of working with him was his extraordinary attention to detail. Every small aspect of the design fits together so artfully that he accommodated all of our family's needs while transforming the loft into an elegant and cohesive whole. David gut-renovated our Soho loft — which started off with diagonal walls, a red-painted plywood kitchen with naked male torso brassing for cabinet handles, a silver-painted jacuzzi tub for 6 (missing only an overhead disco ball) — you get the idea. It’s now a pristine, minimalist, serene oasis graced with the Hotson signature of one volume effortlessly and seamlessly unfolding into another. We absolutely love it. We interviewed over a dozen (including some famous) architects for the renovation because, well, I am extremely picky. When we met David and saw his work, we knew that he was the one. The guy is a quiet juggernaut. If you hire him, you will get something distinctive and awesomely beautiful. > > David is well known for very innovative, very high-end work and he is exceptionally good at it, but he is a personable, good humored, highly motivated, and down-to-earth, and you don't have to be rolling in it to have him transform your living space. We are of middling means with a very tight budget and were still able to get a strikingly beautiful architectural masterpiece. That would give you the option of also burning wood if you wanted to in the future. Does that answer your question? **Q: Belay system** *(in Photo Questions)* Do you need someone to belay you or is there an automatic system set up? A: There is an automatic belaying reel bolted to the steel truss at the apex of the pyramidal four-story living room space, so it is possible to leap off the column and be lowered gently back down to the ground floor. **Q: How do you round out the walls like that?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: Gypsum wallboard manufacturers have created thin wallboard materials that can be applied to standard stud framing that has been installed along a curved path. For tighter radii the paper surfaces of the wallboard can be moistened….. Is the fireplace on the picture a focus model, or a smaller copy? A: The fireplace in this loft is a FireOrb (http://www.fireorb.net)..... It is a wonderful design (by the late, great Doug Garafolo) and is smaller and less costly than the Focus suspended fireplaces (which are also beautiful). **Q: What is the material used for the wall and ceiling?** *(in Photo Questions)* Love the crisp lines and clean smooth textures. What is the material used? A: The wall surfaces here are skim-coat plaster applied over a gypsum substrate between specially milled wood plaster beads, which form the reveals or shadow-gaps between the facets. This space --and the even more intricate facetted space of the stairwell in this project-- was constructed by an extraordinarily talented construction team who assembled the layers of sub-construction so that the joints between the finished facets intersect precisely. **Q: Is that a slide?** *(in Photo Questions)* Is that a slide?
