I'm trying to figure out what type of cabinets we have. I'm sure there's someone here who could tell me! Also, are they nice quality? Would you recommend painting them? The previous owner of our house works at a very high-end cabinet company, so I've always assumed they were nice cabinets and that painting them would be a mistake. I'd love some insight from someone who knows more than I do though! Thanks in advance. A: They're Birch. Birch is often used in lue of Maple. Birch is more common and has more options as to size of styles / rails etc. The door is Birch plywood and the rails are solid. The boxes are melamine with mdf core ( medium density fiberboard ) common for middle grade cabinets... I'd take the advice of Premier Cabinets or if you do paint pay the price and get a highly skilled painter. Just be ready to pay what it will take to do the job right or you'll be sorry later. Open concept (maybe TOO open for some) so everything needs to tie together. Sectional stays and would prefer to keep the buffet as it was my grandmother's. I have several pillow inserts but haven't pulled the trigger on buying fabric to cover them. Feel free to share any navy, light blue, grey, green, or yellow fabrics you think would look good! Might eventually do inside mount bamboo blinds but prefer the openness of nothing right now. My biggest hang up is the dining nook. It feels lacking, but with such a big light, I can't figure out what would look best. Cant wait to see what you suggest! I've been lurking on this page since moving in a few weeks ago, and I must say--it's so much friendlier and welcoming than some of the other forums! A: I am in So. Ca. from a quick glance here is my two cents. The neutral colors with white accents are nice. They give a somewhat warm and formal feeling. I usually tell my clients when it comes to picking the finishes you can one of two basic ways. If you go neutral you will need colorful accent pieces whether it be furniture or wall accents like paintings and other accent pieces. If you go down the color road ie; paint , tile, accent tiles etc. you can then tone down your color selections of paint, floor covering and furniture. You don't want everything competing with everything or it melds and nothing really becomes a focus. I would get rid of the sectional with you walls and existing colors it just melds with the neutral earth tones you have. A perfect example of if your going neutral the furnishings should give the color. I don't think florals are the right colors as some have suggested in this thread as that gives off a very feminine feeling , which is fine if that is what you are after. That said I feel it usually looks better to have a mix of masculine as well as feminine mixed in . Good luck you have an easy fix as many others have suggested . **Q: Kitchen back splash** *(in Design Dilemma)* When doing a back splash, do you have to do the adjacent walls? See attached pix, trying to see if that part needs a backsplash. It was suggested to me to do it half way up the wall but not sure I like that. A: I agree with the stoppers. To do it right you might not have the room (looks tight) to lath and mud then tile. I do not like merely attaching tile to drywall. I also think half way will not look great and all the way up would make the kitchen look smaller (looks small already). In a large kitchen you can use same material as counter top.. in a small kitchen better to go with something differant on splash, the linear look makes the kitchen ares seem bigger. good luck. www.sfconstruct.net. I tend to look at things from the stand point of a professional in the business for over 30 years and value the time and advice given in good faith to anyone who wants or needs it.
