Daniel worked through the Building Code and my drawings to provide me with the required specifications and references. He also made a number of suggestions on the permit drawings which I had prepared. He took the trouble to explain the issues and demonstrated an excellent grasp of the subtleties of the Building Code. TABC also provided review & comment on my final permit application as well as code references to satisfy some additional Building Department requests. I received the permit shortly after submission. I am highly satisfied with the services provide; it's difficult to find an architectural firm willing to work on technical issues without a design component. Adding space to the existing structure was a challenge, particularly with our goal to preserve the heritage character of the building. They were quick to understand our vision, and presented us with several alternatives for a design. The plans we chose were very detailed and addressed the many issues of adding new space to the existing infrastructure - old plumbing, hot water radiator heating, and stone foundation. They diligently monitored the construction as it progressed, ensuring a quality build. The end result was amazing... two exterior stone walls became interior walls, reclaimed barn beam was incorporated in the design, an open concept with the shower. A: Hi Andre We designed the custom millwork for this project (as we do on all our projects). I happen to have been a professional woodworker for 15 years before becoming an Architect. It is a mix of walnut for the display niches, and painted glass for the doors. For this project, Kim Scott-Wood of Scottwood Construction was the Construction Manager and hired the millwork company who built this piece. They did a great job! They are from Inline Fibreglass http://www.inlinefiberglass.com/ One of their advantages is that they will custom size everything. Their triple glazed windows cost about the same as some other suppliers double glazed and well worth the extra cost for the comfort. This project had existing 1940's single pane steel windows that looked amazing but were always icing up , drafty and generally pretty lousy at keeping the outdoors out. We wanted to replicate the look as clsoely as we could but with modern levels of performance. Daniel **Q: where are the drawers from?** *(in Photo Questions)* Are those custom cabinets under the Pax's or something from Ikea? A: Hi Betty This is all standard Ikea PAX units. The carpenters did a fantastic job making them appear to be custom built-ins by making a drywall bulkhead above to the height of the PAX units Daniel **Q: Exterior Colour Scheme** *(in Photo Questions)* We are looking to change our exterior colour scheme of a house much like this. I like what you came up with here. I notice the eaves are black. What is the colour of the soffit and fascia (ie is it full white or some off white?) Also the bay window and posts and beam are they white or cream or some other colour? Thanks! A: Hi, all the exterior trim on the right-hand side is Benjamin Moore OC-49 Titanium. Since this photo was taken, the neighbours on the left have matched the colour of their trim and also added a similar porch enclosure. **Q: Does it work to put wall to wall glass right up to kitchen cabinets?** *(in Photo Questions)* I am renovating my Toronto annex house. We are moving the kitchen to the back of the house and opening it up will ceiling height back doors, wall to wall. Problem is the counters that will be on side walls will meet that glass..would that look strange to have them meet the glass? Help! A: Hi, That's a good point and a problem that we have encountered before. (excuse the poor pun) In this case, we applied two strategies to solve the problem. On the outside of the window, we have used the same counter material beside the BBQ at the same height and width as in the kitchen. Then we detailed the glass frames to be flush with the countertop. the result is that the counter appears to flow through the window from inside to outside whereas in reality there is a fully insulated wall between them. By also carrying the stone veneer wall through from inside to outside, we strengthen the impression that the space flows seamlessly from inside to out. Depending on your space, another approach could be to detail the exposed end of the countertop with a waterfall edge (as in the left side of the Island above). From outside you would see the finished end of the counter. Be sure to leave yourself enough space to be able to keep this clean, though! I hope this helps. Look for our contact info on our Houzz pro homepage or at tabc.ca Daniel **Q: Wall color please?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: the taupe tone is actually a trick of the warm LED lighting (very early generation back in 2006) and the reflected colour of all the wood. the wall panels themselves are an off-the-shelf pre-painted hardboard panel in a warm off-white. We don't have paint chip numbers for this as it was from the manufacturers very limited colour selection. One of the lessons we learned developing this prototype is that with small production runs, you are at the mercy of the available supply chain. Custom orders are only cost-effective in large volumes and a primary goal of this project was a $100,000 home. This photo shows the view in the opposite direction in broad daylight.
