\*Belgard Authorized Contractor\*

Winterberry Landscape and Garden Center had its beginnings as Environmental Designs, a small Landscaping Design and Build Company founded by two brothers, Scot and Al Leavitt. To say they had humble beginnings back in 1985 is a bit of an understatement. In fact, the story goes that Scot and Al at one point ate nothing but Ramen Noodles for two straight weeks. But they worked hard, and slowly built their company.

Scot, with his Fine Arts Degree, soon gained a reputation for creative designs that were as much works of art as landscapes. He and Al built their team, many of whom are still around to this day. As they added people they also gained their expertise, and soon the company was expanding its offerings. In addition to Landscape Design and Installation, they were also becoming known for high-quality Irrigation, Landscape Lighting, Fencing, and Maintenance services throughout Connecticut.

At that time, the Southington, Connecticut site now known as Winterberry Gardens, was a sandpit notable only for the wild winterberry shrubs that grew all over it. But that changed one day when Scot and Al drove down West Street on their way to a November job site. They might have overlooked the spot entirely had it not been for the bright red berries that blanketed the field. Instead, it got the brothers thinking about a new home. In tribute they re-named their company after the shrubs that first drew their notice driving along West Street. And of course, it’s remained Winterberry Gardens ever since.

From our family to yours, with sincerest thanks,

Scot & Al Leavitt

**★ — Scott Prenovitz, June 2021**

> I Hired Winterbury in June 2020 to renovate my backyard with plants and trees fire pit and play area and new walkway. They spent three days on the job rushing to complete the job for the holiday weekend. Once complete we did exactly what we were told to water the plants and trees and we did. Two out of the seven hemlocks Winterbury planted have died. The perennials that we requested to be planted low to the ground in front of the boxwoods turned out to be extremely tall towering over the boxwoods. The walkway has gaps in the border due to various size Belgian block used. Grass that was put down to replace the work that was done only grew weeds. Winterberry never came back to repair it. For over a year there have been endless emails back-and-forth about replacement and repair. However when there is a schedule date they cancel. I’ve left messages with management that go in un-returned. Emails have now gone on unanswered. There has been zero effort from management to reach out and they have been copied on all emails. I urge anyone looking to do a project with Winterbury. To use at your own risk.

> RUINED MY LAWN!
> Probably one of the most expensive lawn care services in CT, so the expectation is they will be better than the others. Far from that! Also, their sales pitch really degrades the services of others to position themselves as the experts; all talk, cannot deliver! I would not recommend anyone to use Winterberry Gardens.
>
> I signed up for the season for $1,200.00; a significant premium over the others; however, with great expectations. After their second application my lawn started to brown, this is in early June when grass in CT is green even if you do nothing. Obviously, they burned the roots. They came back with a third application then killed everything that was previously green. Despite numerous complaints and the obvious brown lawn; Winterberry was in denial that they burned my lawn. After I pressed hard that they needed to fix my lawn or reimburse me for the full season ($1,200.00), they did eventually reimburse me for the 2 applications they did not apply (no grass, they killed all of it) and made a lame try to fix the lawn with a substandard mix of grass seeds. See pics below for the ruined lawn.
>
> There are a few characters from Winterberry you do not want within a mile of your lawn. 1) Michael Brancaccio - supposedly a "lawn expert"; I did not see any credentials to support that claim. All will be fine as long as there are no complaints. After I complained that my lawn was browning, not greening, Michael was aggravated that I was not appreciative enough of all the work he was doing and threatened about 'the relationship' - its all about delivery & results Michael! I have most of the less-than-friendly text messages, happy to share with anyone. 2) David Fusco - a talking head that showed up as part of the escalation process as a PR person. Delivery still sub-standard.
>
> Conclusion: After spending $1,200.00 at Winterberry; I had a brown lawn. The following year I spent ~$480.00 at Home Depot on Scotts products and did it myself and was able to restore my lawn to almost where it was before Winterberry ruined it. I have also received several estimates from other lawn services for around $600.00 - $850.00 to do my lawn; significantly less. I'm certain these services could not do a worst job than Winterberry did.

> Bad service
> Not only me with landscaping
> My neighbor ‘s too
> Never get the job done they promised
> Multiple requests ignored
> Do not hire them !

**★★★★★ — clth2jc, May 2015**

> We hired Winterberry to re-design our front yard, fix our front entry stairs, install landscape lighting and plant mature trees. It was nothing but easy from day one. Our designer, Bryan, was knowledgeable, accommodating and made the process easy. He made it easy simply by utilizing technology - which many landscape firms do not. We had 3D views, general plans, and plant descriptions. He was also easy to reach via cellphone/email. The install was laid out in phases and we had a general manager to work with every day. It truly was an easy experience and the results have been amazing. We got through the harshest Winter (yet) with next-to-nothing damage. And, we have three additional neighbors who are now using Winterberry because of our amazing-looking front yard.

> Be careful patronizing Winterberry Gardens. I was very unhappy with the service provided by this company. They left my property damaged, and were very disrespectful once they had my money.
