> I love this house every single day I'm in it. And some make a credible argument that our detached bedroom, added later, also by their design, is the best part! Inside and out flow seamlessly, which is what our psyches need. Recently we made a rookie mistake. We needed help with big plans for landscaping to be integrative with our big add-on deck. We first turned to a landscape person...FAIL. We so should have turned to Designworks first. We pitched the landscape person's lame 'concept.'; We are building to Designworks plans. (Did i mention they provided valuable consultation that added to the transformation remodel of our Boulder City desert home?)

The dramatic projecting roof of the house provides a shelter for the deck and allows the rooms to fully open to the view beyond. Balancing this are entry elements consisting of a detached garage and a covered arcade that connects to a towering entry counter form. The insulated roof panels coupled with an earth sink heat pump allows the house to be very energy friendly.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Large walk in pantry layout??** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Argh. You have this room for a pantry. There's an open doorway (bottom) and an open window/pass through (left) into the dining room. Also a header running the full length of the room, 12 x 4". What you need:
--countertop under the pass thru (open under, no cabs)
--microwave on a wall
--any other countertop w/cabinets under
--mini fridge on the countertop
--spot for a vacuum, mop/bucket (preferably behind a door, not sitting out)
How would you best configure the space, assuming you have no limitations such as using current cabinets, no other appliances to work around, and want to utilize as much cabinet/counter space storage as you can? (the way we had it worked out before there was a bunch of open wall space and I didn't like that)

A: I see no problem with your wish list, there is plenty of room for it all! First you can't easily move the door or pass-through so configure the pass through to that the "pass" is actually on the other side of the wall. In other words so that the window sill extends to create a shelf on both sides of the wall, say 10" or so on the outer side and 4"-6" on the inner side netting about 18" of shelf space to actually pass and or present things in the window. The "pass" shelf can widen out at the far end of the window to become a full counter as it runs into the corner. This would not crowd the door. Witch way does the door swing? You should draw that into your plan. I would stack an RV size fridge and microwave someplace opposite the pass window. A stub wall adjacent the door makes a small turn to the back "long" wall and hides the perfunctory cleaning supplies. The rest of the space is counters, cabinets (perhaps with glass or frosted door panels and boom you have a really big pantry and nice place to "display" the back side of this operation. Hope that helps. Reach out if you need more help. And for the record I think the pass-through is a great design opportunity. Leave it, guests will enjoy coming up to it to chat with whoever is behind it.
Best of luck!
Ivan

**Q: Tile transition- what do you think?** *(in Windows)*

My tile will be laid in a brickwork setting, above the range and either side of the upper cabinets (17” of visible tile) . I have a large window on the opposite wall. Would you continue the same height of tile (to the left of the window)? Or transition to a lower height of tile (7” of tile), after it runs under the window ( to the left of the window, where the cabinets end)?

A: That big window dominates that wall so a short 17" section to the left of it will look like its trying to compete but failing. Let the tile continue under it to the end of the counter at 7". It will look fine and then go up to the bottom of the counters every where else. You might hang a floating shelf or two on that left side at say 8-12" and use that as a functional transition and then carry the tile up to the shelf. But I think 17" will just look like there is the section just hanging out there in the midst of the continuing wall unconstrained if you will. Another option could be to "dissipate" the tile as a transition but not sure what style you are after here.
Best of luck.

**Q: Art** *(in Photo Questions)*
