Crowley Cottrell is a partnership between Michelle Crowley and Naomi Cottrell, practitioners with decades of design and construction experience. We came together in 2011 to form a practice grounded in collaboration and creativity.

We bring clarity and intention to every site, creating landscapes that foster connection and well-being. With a diverse portfolio spanning residential spaces, historic properties, multi-family housing, parks, campuses, and cultural institutions we believe that thoughtful, well-designed landscapes can profoundly impact the lives of those who experience them.

Our approach is collaborative and client-centered, working closely with stakeholders and professionals to align design aspirations with each site’s unique qualities. Guided by expertise, creativity, and a nurturing spirit, we cultivate relationships that honor both people and place.

- [Brandeis House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/brandeis-house-pj-vj~7750156)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: The historic Brandeis House was built in 1914 for Leland Powers, a performing arts educator. The house was later home to two presidents of Brandeis University. The design scope included gardens and terraces for gathering, and creating circulation around the entire house. Set on a steep hill, the home was formerly difficult to reach and its landscapes hard to inhabit.
- [West Stockbridge Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-stockbridge-residence-pj-vj~7750148)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: This 15 acres property nestled in a steep, rocky hillside required a sophisticated grading strategy to circulate around the main house, guest cabin and surrounding woodland. A variety of path networks were utilized to capture the views and create intimate moments within the landscape. Bluestone steps through an allée of columnar beech trees; a walking bridge from the second story of the main house to goshen stone steps through a birch tree grove; pathway steps to a greenhouse and family memorial…
- [Meadow House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/meadow-house-pj-vj~7750143)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This home sits within the 100’ buffer of a historic New England wetland, therefore sensitivity to the natural environment led the design of this private residence. The added deck and pool maximized views of the conservation area and providing opportunity for observation and contemplation. The existing wetland meadow was enhanced and increased through the development of a careful mowing schedule and additions of native perennials. Team: Crowley Cottrell, DSK Architects, Merz Construction Inc, And…
- [Vasthu Shastra Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/vasthu-shastra-residence-pj-vj~7748465)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: The Indian design principles of Vasthu Shastra inspired the design for this landscape. In Vasthu Shastra, the home is divided into quadrants, which correspond to the four elements: earth, fire, air and water. Each element relates to specific colors, shapes, textures, and types of activities. Crowley Cottrell and LDa Architecture worked closely with the clients to translate these principles into a cohesive design for this New England house and landscape. Crowley Cottrell's design uses planting, w…
- [Cottage Farm Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/cottage-farm-residence-pj-vj~7748458)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: Located in the prestigious Cottage Farm National Register Historic District, this grand brick Georgian Revival, dating from 1919, was in need of restoration both inside and out. The house and landscape were defined by traditional elements: formal brick terraces spilling out from living rooms, cast stone balustrades marking the edge of the gardens, and a brick entry court sized for a past era. Renovations included updating these spaces for current uses and simplifying the planting and lawns. Team…
- [Beacon Hill Rooftop](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/beacon-hill-rooftop-pj-vj~7748453)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Crowley Cottrell designed this Beacon Hill rooftop with an elegant uniformed aesthetic. We reconciled the client’s modernist preferences with Beacon Hill Historic district regulations. The design uses a constrained palette of blackened stainless steel, ipe, concrete and planting. With careful engineering, the custom railing looks satisfyingly uniform without any large intermediate posts. Team: Crowley Cottrell, Bodroin and Fruit, Jones Architecture, Cafco Construction
- [Barnstable Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/barnstable-residence-pj-vj~7748441)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Situated in a historic neighborhood this residence sits high above the adjacent street giving it magnificent views of the salt marsh beyond. The dramatic grade change is navigated directly up a grand set of bluestone steps embedded in native plantings or indirectly through sloping grass paths that allow for wheelchairs or less mobile visitors. Historic bricks found during the demolition of the existing chimney are strategically placed in the walkway up from a newly defined parking area. The exis…
- [Concord Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/concord-residence-pj-vj~7748436)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: In an effort of true collaboration, we worked with the architects to site this building in the landscape such that it feels that it has always been there. The living spaces are carefully orchestrated to take full advantage of views of an historic stone retaining wall surrounding a large preserved wet meadow. We further grounded the building by transplanting large trees from the site and establishing a native meadows that carry your eye through to the existing meadows beyond. BSLA Merit Award…
