> I'm simply speechless with this company, I've been looking to install shutters for my 2 sliding doors for a while now and I finally found the right company. Excellent Blinds made the entire process seamless, from beginning to end they gave me top-notch service, the entire team works like a well-oiled machine. The sales technician gave a very fair price, the administrative staff kept me updated with my progress every step of the way. The installation team came in and took every Covid safety precaution and left my home better than new. My only regret is not finding them sooner. Stop looking any further because hand down this company will exceed all your expectations!!

**★★★★★ — Eva, Oct. 2021**

> Great company and great service! Everyone in the team was on top of the game. What I liked the most was that they kept me posted from the day I called to make an appointment all the way till the day I have my shutters installed. I had to wait for 5 weeks for my shutters but their communication was very effective. I got reminders for all my appointments. Plus, they always answered my questions timely and patiently.
> Quality is another main reason I chose them. So far I liked my poly shutters so much! They do have wood shutters, but I'm glad that I chose the poly one because they are moisture resistant. It looks organic and goes along with my wood furniture. The sales William also told me that it would be very durable because the poly is solid and with metal inserts.
> Highly recommended.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Suggestions for awkward nook before entering master bedroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I’m looking for some ideas for this space. Any help is appreciated! The room is right before you walk into the master bedroom

A: I would recommend painting the wall and then adding a painting. Lose the table in the corner.

**Q: Am I crazy to paint my lower cabinets black?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Am I crazy to paint the lowers cabinets in my ugly builder-grade kitchen black? I love black; it's my can't-make-a-decision color.
I started with FMP Bayberry (see lowers on the left) and am not loving it. Then I thought perhaps a sage green (Lichen?). But, ugh, I'm not sure.
The uppers will be FMP Raw Silk (but I haven't bought the paint yet!). The white appliances will unfortunately stay until they no longer function. Ugly pink countertops will be replaced with white quartz.

A: You're not crazy, but you should go all black. Consider redoing the floor and walls to contrast and adding new silvertone hardware to the cabinets.

**Q: Butcher block confusion!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Today our cabinet maker delivered and installed our Boos walnut butcher block countertop and I just knocked on it and it sounds like a hollow core door!
I thought butcher block was solid wood - we paid $3,000, which seems more in line with what a solid wood costs. I've had a butcher block top before and it felt much heftier than this. The only thing I've ever heard that is wood and sounds like this is a cheap hollow core door.
It came with Boos paperwork and a little Boos gold triangle insignia that was not attached but just in a bag with the paperwork.
What gives? Any thoughts about this?

A: The hollow sound is probably the resonance from the cabinet underneath. It's common in fixtures like this. Pro tip: Hold your palm underneath the board of the overhang, then knock on the topside, you should hear a significant difference.

**Q: shades for french doors and sidelights?** *(in Home Decorating)*

Here's our new wall of glass, just installed in our kitchen/family room. It's freaking me out. Not sure I love it - but that's beside the point now. Anyway! I need to get some shades on these suckas. There's almost no wall on either side to do draperies, so what do y'all recommend? It's a 1908 house and vibe is pretty traditional (would've done more panes - like 12 - but wouldn't have worked with the style of the windows in the rest of the house, fwiw). The doors are out-swing. Thanks!!
(I know there are many posts on this topic - but it's too many, it's overwhelming and all a little different from my set up)

A: @Zara Personally I would go with motorized shades for the simple fact that it's convenient. Nothing is cooler than just pressing a button and having something motorized do all the work for you. Another option with motorized is to go automated. You can use your smartphone to control the shades from anywhere and even set a time and day for the shades to raise and lower.

**Q: Insulating windows drafts** *(in Heating & Air Conditioning)*

guys - I have some cheap windows installed in this house we purchased and they are faulty by design as you can see in the pictures (red circles indicate where we feel cold draft). Hence, we bought this part on somebody's advice - https://www.swisco.com/Single-Hole-Aligner/pd/Spiral-Balance-Retainers/26-139

However, it only blocked 50% of the draft. So, we tried just some rectangular black foam which you typically put around a window AC and that works better but still only blocking maybe 70%. Is there some sort of expanding rigid foam that I can cut a slit into and put it around and it expands a bit to keep drafts out (not talking about Great stuff since that will be permanent and could cause issues I guess). Thanks

A: You could put up some honeycomb shades during the interim until you get new windows. Obviously it's not permanent solution, but it will help insulate the window.

**Q: what are the current window trends for 2022?** *(in Home Decorating)*

I need to replace my wood blinds they are 22 years old. We get very strong string all day long so I do need to cover the window. Roller shades? Too contemporary? Help
Painting the room a light beige

A: OMG, this is why I love my job. Zebra shades, hands down. You get the whole convenience factor attached to roller shades, especially if you go motorized, PLUS as an added benefit, Zebra shades act almost like blinds where you can adjust the panels to modulate the light entering the room as well.
