What Kathy designed and implemented for us is a DREAM kitchen. We loved Kathy's design ideas so much that we hired her to help with the entire house design, from our exposed railroad beam, tiling, right down to the hardwood floor color. She is not afraid to go bold in a very elegant way. Kathy is a thinker and took her time to make sure the perfect plan was executed to get our vision. Kathy's creativity is endless and versatile . Many designers are repetitive with the layout. We were building our home and Kathy communicated with our GC, Electrician, Plumber, tiler and custom hood company. Kathy came to the job site countless times to make sure lighting wires were run in places we wanted island sconces, bar lights, kitchen table high hats etc. It was way beyond her duties! For the kitchen, we envisioned something transitional with high quality cabinets that would "play well" with the gray cedar and white walls in an open floor plan the kitchen shares with the main level of the home. As we love to cook and informally entertain, the kitchen was conceptualized as the focal point of the main level where guests would feel comfortable wandering in and from which those cooking could look out and interact without having to turn around or feel isolated. > At the outset, the project presented significant challenges: the room is irregularly shaped with only one full exterior wall for tall appliances and upper cabinets. The ceiling is cathedral. We also wanted an open area looking over to the dining room and we needed to keep within the color parameters already established in the house. Like many renovations, we were striving to keep the budget proportional to the value of the house, which we plan to remain in 5 - 10 years. > During the interview process - we met with several prospective designers - Kathy impressed us with various qualities that held constant throughout the project. She was extremely sensitive to the budget parameters and never attempted to upsell us into features which may have reduced her labor or enhanced her "bottom line." She is a problem solver with an excellent sense of what works aesthetically. She listens sensitively to the clients' objectives and reactions. As problems arise, she addresses them, whether this involves communicating with the general contractor or coming to the house to ensure that work is properly executed. Finally, she is a team player who used her own cabinet installers (excellent) and collaborated smoothly with our General Contractor, countertop fabricator, lighting and tile retailers, including meeting us at the showrooms to help with our selections. > The end product is, needless to say, our dream kitchen aesthetically and functionally. Well 10 ft ceilings are glorious.....You could develop a beautiful coiffured ceiling that could take up 12" of height and bring the cabinetry and crown to that.
