> My project was a total master bath remodel.  I had never worked with an interior designer before, but I can't imagine a better one than Maria Ristau, Pratt Residential Design.  We started with empty space and very few specific design features.  I wanted a "start from scratch" approach and Maria's imagination was well suited to that challenge.  I really enjoyed our brainstorming sessions as the final concept emerged from many possibilities.  With that settled, she brought all the details together with professional quality drawings and provided hands on guidance through floor and shower tile selection, vanity cabinets and countertops, trim and wall color coordination, closet features, light fixtures, and the other myriad details required to finish the project.  She was prompt in responding to any and all questions I raised and I quickly came to rely on her expertise and experience regarding even the minutest details. Are you able to share the name and color of the counter top and confirm if it is granite or quartz?

A: Hello Anna, thank you for admiring this kitchen!  The counter is granite sourced from Elemar natural stone (other suppliers may name it otherwise) as "Lapidus."  Always hand-pick your slabs if at all possible.

**Q: Has anyone used Rustica Hardware for their sliding door?** *(in Home Decorating)*

Curious to see whether it's a good company to order from.

A: I specified an unfinished door (so we could control color) with a client on a house last year.  She was very happy with the result!  I am about to specify three more on another project.

**Q: Advice on IKEA KITCHENS - Yes or No** *(in Remodeling)*

My daughter would like to redo her kitchen.  She currently has cherry cabinets that are 25 years old.  Although they are in OK condition, she would like a white kitchen.  Rather than painting them she is thinking of starting from scratch as there are a few layout changes she'd like to make. The kitchen is relatively small (10 x 12) L shape plus a small island.  I've heard some pretty good things about IKEA kitchens but don't know much.  Are there different levels some being better quality than others. She is not interested in foil doors, but wants wood. Other brands that are well made but don't break the bank.  Her home is outside Boston in a highly sought after town.

A: If she wants wood doors then “the rta store” is probably worth her consideration.  https://www.thertastore.com    it would be a real challenge at that budget to do much of a remodel -  maybe if she did everything herself & didn’t change any plumbing or electrical. Removing cabinets usually means destroying the counter.  I would encourage her to ask around semi- locally for a custom cabinet builder that will do the installation and take responsibility for a perfect fit.  Keep in mind with ikea it will take a week of someone’s time (likely) to sort through, assemble, and install.  IKEA excels at the organization & the drawer glides are ok but everything must be perfectly square to look & function correctly (which usually takes a determined pro) if she does go that route.  Have her order a sample door first for any online purchase.

**Q: Love backsplash! What is it called?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Donna!  The backsplash is a 2x4 natural stone (Limestone, but similar products are out there in marble & travertine too) with a beveled edge.

**Q: Wood or tile floors in my kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are remodeling our 20 year old house and are debating about what type of flooring to put in the kitchen?  I'm hesitant to put wood floors in since kids will be coming in from the pool....  thoughts?

A: Either is a beautiful choice but your lifestyle & taste matters most  --- Go for the option you'll be happiest with -- If you love wood and will enjoy it earning history & patina then it's a great fit.  If you want the least amount of change over time with the least amount of maintenance, tile may be right for you (just be sure you select something that will not be slippery when wet if your kids are running in from the pool!).  The problems that arise with water & wood are usually due to water getting UNDER the wood -- so a floor finished in place with a  quality poly & no surface cracks is the best defense.
