## Community Q&A

**Q: Should an island be so red to the floor?** *(in Remodeling)*

I’m wondering if we should be securing our island/peninsula to the floor or if it can be floating? 

We have a bank of cabinets 4’ long x 39” wide that will start on a wall and will extend passed the cabinets another 3’ to be used as the table portion of the island. The countertop will be one piece the entire 7’. There will also be a 9” overhang on one side of the cabinets. 

We are planning to install large format tile (like dekton) as the countertop so the material is very thin (6mm). 

Flooring is large format wood looking plank tile. 

Looking for recommendations as to the best course of action.

A: In our area, Sudbury, I am not sure that the island is required by code to be secured... its (inertia) weight alone will prevent movement.  A quick call to Greater Sudbury building services will confirm. There are requirements for island electrical requirements as to how many and what kind depending on the layout and size... always hire a licensed electrician annnd call the ESA for inspection and information. Electrical standards must be strictly adhered to. They are in place for our safety and often the regulations have been implemented because bad things have happened.
