## About

### Houzz Badges

- 1,000 Ideabook Saves

Dynerman Architects is a small, versatile, design-oriented firm located in Washington DC. Led by Alan Dynerman, FAIA, the firm has earned a reputation for listening to and embracing our clients' goals, professional service and design excellence. Our office works from a point of view that is based on a few simple ideas:

1\. That the nobility of architecture is rooted in its reality and utility;

2\. That the two mediums of architecture are materiality and construction;

3\. That the integration of architecture and site is the first measure of good work.

Embracing these essential ideas, our body of work does not cleave to specific styles or trends, formal or philosophical. From this stance our office has built a practice that encompasses a range of project types from residences to conference centers to university planning studies.

The firm is founded on the passion that we have for our work. We believe that what we do is important; it is satisfying and at times humbling. As architects, we are entrusted with the responsibility and privilege to develop the arenas of human interaction.

> Alan Dynerman was the architect on a complete renovation of our Cleveland Park house. While we added only one room to the footprint of the house, every existing room was effected in some way by the rethinking of the space we had and the space we needed. From the largest walls to the smallest detail, Alan designed and then supervised the renovation giving us a house that combines the historical aspects of the 1920s origin with a modern addition that reflects and respects many aspects of what came before. Skylights opened up new light, a Rennie MacIntosh arch design graces our fireplace, bathrooms were modernized and office spaces were added. At the same time, windows were saved and moved, weight bearing columns were hidden in walls, and secret door closets took advantage of space under the eaves. We have been exceedingly happy in our house and with every aspect of Alan’s work as an architect.

> Alan has designed our house that is currently under construction. I have worked with several other quite well-known top notch architects in the past on both commercial and residential projects. Alan Dynerman is in a completely different class.
>
> His process is highly interactive. He starts with really trying to understand how you want to live your life at home —what is important to you. The other architects I worked with in the past went through the motions on this. Alan goes much deeper. He is deeply concerned about the practical aspect of how things should work for you.
>
> He then starts working on a whole range of possibilities — considering everything. He presents these to you. You respond to them and discuss them. Out of this process a preferred solution emerges.
>
> From this point on, the design will go through a whole series of refinements. Things keep getting better and better. He will come back to you and tell you that he has re-thought this or that detail and has come up with what he thinks is a better solution.
>
> This is the way you get really Great design. This is the way my friends who are very successful authors and composers work. This is the way I saw my friend Steve Jobs work over many years.
>
> The result: you will end up not with an "Alan Dynermen house", you will end up with YOUR house — better, more refined, more aesthetically and functionally gratifying than you could possibly have imagined.
>
> Two other things that really distinguish Alan from the other top notch architects I have worked with:
>
> 1\. Alan is the only architect I have ever met who worked his way through college and architectural school actually working construction. This gives him a practical knowledge of what works and what does not that you simply could not get any other way. I cannot over-emphasize how important this is. This practical hands-on experience is essential in helping and architect to avoid designing in things that will later cause problems — and in being able to work closely and collaboratively with the builder during construction.
>
> 2\. Alan has a deep interest in and deep knowledge of architectural history. He has taught it. He works from fundamental design and construction principals in a way that I had never before encountered.

**★★★★★ — Adams Design, Inc, April 2014**

> Alan Dynerman is an extremely talented architect whose projects are dynamic and thoughtful. If you are seeking designs that are intelligent, personal and even inspired, I can recommend Dynerman Architects.

**★★★★★ — Monica Salamon Abrams, April 2014**

> Alan Dynerman designed our entire new house from start to finish. He created a fabulous home for our family. His design is stunning and practical. He was also great to work with. He listened to our wants and needs and incorporated then into a terrific, contemporary design. He was also instrumental in working with our builders to complete the project on a very tight schedule. Many people complain about the process of building a house, but we would happily do it again with Alan Dynerman.
