At that time he was working for Asplundh Tree as a General Foreman doing commercial line clearance for PG&E. It was his responsibility to run many crews safely – without injury to his men or property damage for the client. Before long though, he recognized a need in the residential sector and founded Foothill Tree Service in September of that year as an answer to that need. It started small – just a side business on the weekend, but when those first clients recognized that Jim looked after them like friends- they became life-long clients. The clientele steadily grew, and Jim was beginning to realize that ‘Residential work’ is where he wanted to stay; so, he ended his career at Asplundh. He didn’t realize it at the time, but he had started a culture, a legacy- one of safety, of education and of care for our clients. He had no idea that this little side business would see him to his retirement and beyond. Fifty years later, Foothill Tree Service is still being run by Jim’s family. His son, Chad, takes on the brunt of the Arboricultural work, but still operates “Safety First” and with the motto: “Treat our Clients as Friends, and our Employees as Family.” Another standard Jim instilled in our company is that if something goes wrong, WE WILL MAKE IT RIGHT. The tree was laying on both houses. > > A crew of 3 men from Foothill Tree Service plus a crane operator with a 75 ton capacity crane came out and got the tree off both houses with no further damage to the houses and no damage to the fence under the fallen tree. They were amazing, very competent and professional. They also cut up the large branches and trunk into firewood for me, which I was hauling into the back yard while they were handling the tree. Near the end, one of the guys had nothing to do so he grabbed my wheelbarrow when I wasn't looking, loaded it with large chunks of the tree's trunk, hauled it into the backyard and dumped it in exactly the right place. He hauled 3 or 4 loads, saving me a good piece of work at the end of the day. Great bunch of guys. Oh yeah, they also tarped the damaged part of our house to keep out the rain that's expected to fall in a couple days. Also, before the work started, the crew's supervisor pushed hard to get a crew and a crane here to get the job done before it rained. The most recent project involved the removal of a very old and tall oak tree that might have fallen and caused severe damage to the roof. At this time they also removed dead and potentially dangerous limbs from two other trees next to the house and over the roof area. Previous projects involved similar tasks including dead wood thinning, removal of mistletoe and the trimming of branches to help relieve the stress on older trees affected by the drought or decay. With any tree removal, the crew cuts the trunk and larger limbs into manageable 16 or 18 inch size logs. The smaller limbs and branches are chipped and placed at a location of our request. > > Previous to any work done, a Certified Arborist comes out to the property to evaluate every aspect involved with the project and to assess the cost of the project. We are very impressed not only with the knowledge of their Certified Arborists but also with that of their excellent tree crews. They are prompt, hard-working, efficient, thorough, absolutely responsible and very congenial.
