Studio Couture is a residential architecture studio in Sausalito specializing in homes throughout Marin County and San Francisco. Many of our projects involve older homes from the 1950s to the 1970s, steep hillside sites, and neighborhoods where zoning and design review influence nearly every decision.

All work is led by principal architect and builder Scott Couture. Clients have one point of contact from the first meeting through the construction documents, which keeps the process focused and aligned. There are no handoffs or separate teams interpreting the design.

Our construction sets often exceed 50 pages and include structure, drainage, staging, material coordination, and other details that help both the city and the builder understand the project clearly. This level of detail supports a smoother permitting process and a more predictable construction experience.

**★★★★★ — George DDS, Sept. 2019**

> It took several years of planning prior to starting our home remodel. Scott Couture was very patient along the way. His knowledge of the materials and products needed to achieve our ultra modern vision was excellent. The contractor, Tim Vinson of Building Alchemy, was very patient also and his understanding of the vision was in line with ours. The quality of work was impeccable and on the mark. His access to local bespoke custom fabricators was invaluable. We lived in the house during the remodel and all members of the highly trained team were respectful of our privacy. We would highly recommend Couture Architecture for any modern remodel or design.

**Comment from Studio Couture:**

> Thank you Dr. George, working with you and Debby to bring your vision to life was such a pleasure. I look forward to our next project together.

**★★★★★ — Karen R, March 2015**

> I worked with Scott on a recent remodel on a Healdsburg bungalow. We explored several options from a simple refresh of the kitchen to a full remodel and addition of square footage. Throughout the process Scott developed creative solutions that fit our lifestyle and provided advice on how our decisions might impact our longer term plans. We are delighted with the results! His design brought a modern sophistication to a very humble home. The style and functionality perfectly suits us.

**Comment from Studio Couture:**

> Thank you for your kind words - it was a pleasure to create an environment for your beautiful lights and furniture and to work with you on your "modernized bungalow".

> Scott has been amazing on all aspects of our kitchen remodel, starting with coming up with a unique , functional and elegant design, Our house was built in a craftsman style. Scott was able to incorporate organic craftsman elements into a modern kitchen design which works beautifully with the rest of the house. We love the modern open space, so full of light , it makes you feel like cooking!
> Once construction began, Scott was always available to answer any questions from our contractor or ourselves as they emerged with progression of the project. He was there to help trouble shoot the unexpected and he was always a phone call/text away to help with anything that came up. There are always those small details at the completion of a project which get missed or ignored and Scott has been right there to make sure it gets done and done right. A real testament to his creativity, our contractor who does lots of high end work in San Francisco, said he wants Scott to design his next house, no cookie cutter ,"same old same old" design stuff.
> We recently referred Scott to our daughter and son-in-law to help them create a more functional kitchen in their little one bedroom Edwardian before their first baby is born in August. He has once again come up with such a thoughtful, unique use of the space, open, light and spacious but in keeping with 100 year old architectural style. Scott has an incredible eye and creative talent plus he is pretty nice guy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him or use him again on our next project.

**Comment from Studio Couture:**

> Thank you M, your project was such a pleasure to work on and you & W have been fabulous to work with. I look forward to our next endeavor...

> As inexperienced first time home buyers with a young family, my wife and I purchased a "fixer upper" in San Francisco and sought out help to transform our tired 85 year old Marina style house to a contemporary and comfortable home that would work for a growing family.
>
> From our very first meeting, we found Scott inspirational, creative and detail-oriented professional who exuded a passion for his work. He listened to our needs, desires and took the time to get to know us, resulting in an exciting and creative design that blew away all our expectations - keeping the unique character while giving us modern designs we sought!
>
> Guiding us through the design, permitting, construction, finish selection and final walk through, Scott was with us through every step of the way over the past 14 months! His attention to detail & thoroughness, wealth of experience, creative designs and usage of materials had made our renovation process a smooth and enjoyable experience while giving us a truly beautiful and unique home.
>
> Having had such a positive experience with Scott, not only would we highly recommend Scott to our closest friends and family, but he will be the only choice to consider for our future expansion projects that we have already been thinking of!

**Comment from Studio Couture:**

> Thank you, you both were fabulous clients to work with and I look forward to our next project together.
> Scott

**★★★★★ — Adam Sold, Oct. 2014**

> Couture Architecture, led By Scott Couture, has been the best architect team we have ever worked with. We hired Scott Couture to design a major addition to our hillside house in Mill Valley. Scott provided a fresh and contemporary design, listened to our wishes and spent time understanding our needs, and then flawlessly incorporated them in his Artistic vision. The result is a design that fits well in the complex terrain, cost effective and respectful of the environment.
> The crew Scott brought along, from Geo tech to GC - Building Alchemy, through sub contractors and all, work well together and operate as a cohesive team.
> Too good to be true? Try them out. They are the dream team!

**Comment from Studio Couture:**

> Thanks Adam, we look forward to guiding you through this fabulous multi-phase project and the final "move-in" party.

> Scott Couture was our architect on our project in Sausalito, CA, remodeling a 50 year old house. which he transformed into a modern, cutting edge design that is very livable and functional. He has the ability to see space as no one else can and render his visiion with alacrity, professionalism, wonderful conntractors and timely production. We highly recomment Scott and look forward to future design projects with him.

> 1500 square foot remodel of main level with kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom and study. Took an 3 story high end redwood country house from 1980 and did a sophisticated, ultra modern remodel. Scott pushed creativity far beyond what I had originally imagined. He is one step above a modern architect. The lines are sleek and moves smoothly from one room to the next. He was a pleasure to work with. Honest with his assessments. Scott knows how to work within a budget. We are looking forward to doing our next level with him.

**★★★★★ — adhind, April 2013**

> A professional, creative and fully experienced architect who works so well with our contractor. Scott Couture has thought through so many details of a design and construction project for us. He has excellent relationships in the municipal planning and building departments giving us a confidence in a complex process.

**Comment from Studio Couture:**

> Arthur, thanks for the kind words and for brining a little bit of that New England attitude to the Bay Area. Always fun.

**★★★★★ — suzee96, April 2013**

> We have been working on one of Scott’s projects in San Anselmo. He is a talented architect and a good communicator and he lives up to his commitments. He is very knowledgeable and has a great attention to detail. He is also creative, professional and efficient.
> The project was thoroughly designed and very well prepared for the building stage and Scott has proved to be a valuable member of the client, architect and contractor team.
> It was a pleasure to collaborate with Scott and we are looking forward to work with him and his clients on any of his future projects.”

**Comment from Studio Couture:**

> Thanks Zee - Shideler Skyvara Construction, one of the best in the Bay Area!

**★★★★ — 1larsb, April 2013**

> My wife and I have worked with Scott on a couple of different project. The largest one was to replace our deck. Scott has a wonderful modern aesthetic, and a great eye for applying his aesthetic to turn around the ho hum to something special. He transformed a basic deck and difficult to use yard to a wonderful outdoor extension of our living space, and made the street visible portion something that significantly improved to the look of our home. People who walk by our house often stop to comment on how much they love the changes. Scott achieves his design by managing all parts of the project and paying close attention to all the details. He hires talented people to do the work and he is excellent at working with the city to get all the paperwork and approvals in place. A major plus for getting the job done.

**★★★★★ — tommayes, March 2013**

> Before he became our architect, Scott was simply our friend. As an amateur architect, I always picked Scott’s brain for ideas which led to lively discussions about style and design. When we were fortunate enough to purchase a turn of the century house that felt and looked all of 100 hundred years old, there was only one person we turned to. I handed Scott my napkin drawings, and what appeared shortly thereafter was an extraordinary and intricate plan. Scott’s understanding of our needs – both utility and aesthetic – was exact. I am biased, but I can attest that our home is the most beautiful and functional in all the area. Scott followed the fundamentals of the initial design and then expounded with captivating details. Scott is a detailed oriented individual, and the results show. He is also very professional in manner and scope. Scott referred and integrated other professionals such that the entire process was cohesive from an engineering and landscape perspective. We feel very lucky that Scott masterminded our project from start to finish. We have our dream home. Thank you to our friend Scott and his associates at Couture Architecture.

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Modern Charmer began when the client purchased the home with the intention of completing a full remodel prior to moving in. While the site offered strong views toward San Francisco and the Bay, the existing house was dark, fragmented, and did not engage its surroundings. The arrival sequence was indirect and compressed. Entry from the street occurred through a narrow driveway and low porte-cochere, followed by additional level changes before reaching the front door. Inside, the entry sat at the…

  - Description: Urban Condos is a three-unit residential building located on a compact industrial parcel in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood. The project was designed to maximize light, usable space, and livability while working cleanly within zoning and planning constraints. Early design studies focused on unit efficiency, daylight access, and how circulation could be handled without sacrificing interior square footage. By placing vertical circulation within each unit rather than in shared common a…

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: West Dry Creek is a remodel and addition that rethinks how a modest 1950s home engages its site overlooking Dry Creek Valley. Rather than replacing the existing structure, the project introduces a restrained architectural intervention. A steel framed, glass lined living space cantilevers toward the view, bringing daylight deep into the interior and creating a direct relationship between the home and the surrounding landscape. Inspired by traditional glass conservatories, the new volume is expres…

  - Description: Lamborghini Living is a reinvention of a well-built home whose interior felt heavy, visually cluttered, and disconnected from its views. The goal was to modernize and quiet the space while improving access to natural light and strengthening the relationship to the bay. Without altering the existing structure, the main level was opened and the solarium removed. A new roofline was introduced to draw reflected natural light deeper into the interior, transforming the quality of light throughout the…

  - Location: Tiburon, CA
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Tiburon Modern is a ground-up residence designed on a steep, undeveloped hillside parcel with expansive views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, and the bay. The primary challenge was solving access to the top of the site while creating a highly livable home within Tiburon’s hillside design guidelines. A sweeping driveway was developed using existing right-of-way to provide comfortable grades, fire access, and direct arrival at the main living level. This allowed the garage, primary suite…

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 4
  - Description: West Marin Modern is an interior remodel completed in two phases for an artist client seeking light, clarity, and spatial calm. The existing home was defined by heavy textures and dark finishes, but budget constraints ruled out structural changes. The design strategy focused instead on material refinement, light, and sculptural form. Textured surfaces were removed and replaced with smooth, light finishes, allowing the existing timber beams to emerge as a unifying architectural element. Sculpted…

The living level stair well was closed and divided the space: we opened it up, gave it some shape and turned it into a sculptural centerpiece. Walls and ceilings where brightened up by skim coating the existing drywall and painting them super white. Rich, bright color was added selectively with walls, carpets, and furniture. - Description: Before I drew a single line, I got on a plane to Mongolia. My clients wanted a home in the Bay Area that carried their cultural Mongolian roots forward. Early design conversations centered around openness and flexibility, but it was clear we were not talking about a typical California open plan. If I was going to design their home properly, I needed to understand where they came from. In Mongolia, inside the National Museum, I stood within a traditional ger. A circular, felt-covered structure or…

## Community Q&A

**Q: This is amazing, can you share the blueprint/materials for this?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I would love to make this for our kids.

A: Hi Ashley, The MOD was custom made in our shop about 15 years ago - mostly based upon napkin sketches and trial and error fabrication. No formal drawings were made - we just enjoyed the path of the fabrication. Here is a link to a document with some information on the materials and photos of the details. https://www.dropbox.com/s/yuj4fjth7fnscmr/2007%20ClubHouse%20MOD.pdf?dl=0

**Q: What is the brand of the table?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I would like to buy this table. What is the model and make?

A: They are the homeowners pieces we brought in from their Florida home. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the manufacturer.

**Q: Do you happen to know where the light fixture is from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It is handblown glass globes & lamps from John Pomp Studios (absolutely beautiful glass) with a custom layout and ceiling canopy designed by Couture Architecture. Assembled and delivered by John Pomp Studios. Please note it is worth, and priced, as a handmade piece of art.

**Q: lighting** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi I wondered if you could tell me where the lights are from? They are beautiful

A: They are hand blown glass lamps from John Pomp with a custom designed layout and blacked steel canopy (by our office).

**Q: Stair supports** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love the vertical stair supports. Where did you get them? Thanks

A: We designed them and had them custom fabricated. They are just simple steel rods with threaded ends and off the shelf turnbuckles. Quite a challenge for the contractor to pull off aligning them - beautifully executed by CalCADE Construction of San Francisco. We blackened the steel to give them the traditional wrought iron look. Thanks for asking...

**Q: what epoxy product was used on the floor? it is BEAUTIFUL** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Karen, the floor is Lavaflow Epoxy, Catalina Blue. It is site poured and mixed out so the applicator has to be an artist. In our case the Ken Hopkins of Garage Solutions gave us something worthy of a Clyfford Still hanging in a modern art gallery.
