**Q: Are the ceiling planks just painted or did you replace?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wondering about painting the planks or replacing them with pre-painted white bead board.

A: The ceiling planks are, in fact, painted.

**Q: Where did you get the cabinets and what is the species and color** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The cabinets were sourced from our subcontractor, will have to ask about which species of wood.

**Q: Window framing** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wondering how you accomplish the window height without sacrificing the header?

A: Believe it or not, there's no true header above the window.  The windows in these cases go tight to the posts/beams and there's a filler piece above.  The Deck House decking system is capable of spanning the entire distance from beam to beam without the need of a supporting header.

**Q: How is water on the upper deck handled?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautiful project. We have 1979 Deck House, and want to do the same thing. However, the standard 3x6 cedar TNG decking does not keep rain from leaking onto lower patio. Do you waterproof the upper deck, or is there a drainage system, or do you just get wet?

A: The TNG you see is the standard Deck House roof decking.  On top of that is tapered insulation covered in the rubber roofing (tapered so the water drains away from the house).  Above the rubber roof is the floating deck you see surrounded in cable rail. Marion is a great area!  A little out of our range, unfortunately.

Deck House is a company founded in 1959 by William Berkes and Robert Brownell in Acton, Massachusetts. All Deck Houses are prefabricated in the factory and use a post and beam construction together with Cedar tongue and groove ceilings. Trim is mahogany and, until recently, siding was also a furred Mahogany. 

Deck Houses can be found in many places, but particularly large numbers of them are in Massachusetts and North Carolina. I've added a couple of images of our house.

A: That's a very good point Kazys... the vast majority of Deck Houses we work on are coated with an exterior stain.  We've had very good results with Sikkens Cetol SRD stain on the siding.

We remodel 3-4 Deck House kitchens each year and have seen all sorts of solutions implemented.  We are actually finishing up a kitchen this week and starting another next week.  Most customers go with lighter wood tones for their cabinetry.  White doesn't usually match the Deck House style, unless you've painted your decked ceilings and most of the mahogany (which it doesn't appear you have)
