However, I don't want to do an overhaul of what I have because I love many of my pieces and many are long lasting, good quality things. My main issues are adding color, texture and finding art and decor that tells a story. I don't know how to find that "right" designer to add this additional layer. I am not looking to spend a lot, but I think it goes beyond just having a certain budget, it's just tapping into another creative, who has access to and an understanding of my design favorites. Any advise on how to start the search in finding the designer that fits my needs? A: Hello Gia, After reading your question it seems that you are very aware of what your decorating needs are. That is the first “half” of a successful business relationship. Contacting a few interior decorators in your vicinity will give you the opportunity to chat on the phone or email about your needs. Select the person you feel comfortable with and that you feel totally understands what you are requesting. Ask around too from other people who may recommend a decorator that they have used and like. Houzz has people registered so that you can look at their websites, etc. AsI likefriday suggests you want ideas on how to display cherished items to add that personal layer, which will involve getting to know what is important to you and your family, and welcomes the opportunity to assist you with ideas for displaying creatively and incorporating these items tastefully. Best of luck! **Q: Should the buffet match the bookcases or the dining room table?** *(in Furniture)* We live in a narrow town house, and are having white bookcases built into our living room/ dining room. They will go from our couch in the living room area all the way to the end of our dining room. We have the option of having a buffet built to match the bookcases, but our dining table is dark wood. That being said, the table will be covered with a tablecloth most of the time-only the dark legs will be showing. So this is my dilemma: should the buffet be made to match the white bookcases, or should it match the dark wood table? (Also, my floors are dark wood, white wall and door moldings). A: You have had great suggestions in the way of more textured pillows paired with the velvet sofa and moving the plant makes a huge difference. The height of the plant in the stand looks good and you don't have to have a plant flanking the opposite side. Your room is interesting and varied. **Q: Rug colors** *(in Design Dilemma)* This site is seriously saving my life! Working on several rooms here and need to add another. We have no living room furniture and need to start buying! The first item I want to get is a rug. I like more neutral patterns but my boyfriend loves bright. He also doesn't like the very trendy moraccon pattern I see so much. I am including photos of the grey color of the room and the color of our floors (will try and get room photo soon). Also attached is a west elm striped rug we both LOVE but which I found to be really scratchy and want something with a better feel on our feet. The grey rug with a orange boarder I really like and the orange medallion rug he really likes. Thinking will do lots of orange/red accents and maybe some blue tones as well. Thoughts on what would look good? A: Consoles come in different heights, they look best if it they are not taller than the window. If you can't find one short enough, a seating bench with baskets below could be next best thing.
