### Reviews

**★ — Laura Dominguez, March 2022**

> Kathy Tufts is a talented designer. I hired her several years ago and she was wonderful. Because of her talent she was my choice for remodeling a bathroom. This is a list of went wrong during the construction:
>
> A.Toilet and tub are wrong color and the bathtub is the shorter than the previous bathtub. I requested a bright white toilet and tub multiple times. Also, the bathtub it is not level after installation.
>
> B.A mosaic made of ¼ inch glass tiles was not competently installed and the mosaic and the side walls’ ¼ inch glass tiles do not reach the ceiling as planned. The bathtub before the remodel was higher and the measurements for the mosaic and side walls tile were taken from it. The tile goes to varying heights on the walls. Where the side wall tiles and the mosaic meet at the corners of the walls there is more space than there should be. The workers tried to fill in the spaces where the mosaic was too short or not wide enough but the pattern/colors of the tile do not match the pattern of the mosaic. The white thin set shows significantly between some of the seams where the six pieces of the mosaic were joined. The thin set will need to be picked out before being grouted because grout will not cover the thin set since the tiles are so small and there is not enough space between the face and the back of the 1/4 inch tiles.
>
> C.The bathroom vanity came with the drawers on the right side and the door of the cabinet on the left side instead of the other way around. The plumbing had to be moved to fit the configuration of the new cabinet as the previous cabinet was the opposite configuration.
>
> D.The marble top of the vanity has one hole for the faucet instead of the Moen Banbury three holed faucet that was purchased.
>
> E.The Moen Banbury bathtub hardware set came with plumbing valve. The valve is in the box while the wallboard and glass tiles have already been installed. The fixtures were available at the start of the remodel.
>
> Since I know next to nothing about construction I hired a remodeling company to evaluate the work and write a report. Also, a neighbor who is a carpenter and former home inspector looked at the project along with a handyman I use. I contacted the mosaic company and I found a mosaic expert through a tile shop who came to look at the mosaic. They each contributed to the list. The mosaic company, the remodeling company and the mosaic installer agreed the mosaic needs to be demolished and redone by an experienced installer because it is very difficult to repair the mosaic.

> The project is not complete.

> Kathy and her crew are doing residence \#2 for me. The first was beautiful and this one will be too. Kathy provides excellent recommendations for how best to achieve desired results. The attached photo is a custom built- in (work in progress) in the living room. Come back later for final photos that will speak a thousand words. I very highly recommend Beyond Design. (P.S. My first house sold within a week - about 7 years after the renovation!)

> Wallpaper removal, prepping and painting two story foyer and hallways on first and 2nd floor. Very professional. Excellent job. Surpassed very short deadlines. Would hire again

> Great design eye and project manager even in the face of unforeseen challenges (that oftentimes come up when doing work on old Arlington houses). She came up with some great design ideas for our kitchen that we never even thought of. Planning on using BDI again for future work.

**★★★★★ — Tony Snedgen, July 2018**

> I own a flooring installation company and we have worked with Kathy Tufts and Beyond Design for over 6 years. Kathy is awesome to work with. She is fair, down to earth, well organized and she cares that her clients, employees and sub contractors are happy

**★★★★ — Keith Mangino, June 2018**

> I think BDI did an excellent job all around. They exhibited good workmanship, sound judgement, and offered good value. Kathy Tufts proved to be an excellent designer with a keen eye for what worked given our preferences and budget. We had them do our upstairs, including baths and bedrooms, as well as our kitchen and family room remodeling on the main floor. Overall, we would use them again for our remodeling needs.

> We enjoyed working with Kathy and her team on a downstairs renovation. Updated and expanded the bathroom, created a small kitchen from a wet bar, and added built in bookcases. We particularly appreciated Kathy's eye for design and attention to detail. We are currently working with Beyond Design on a master bathroom renovation.

**★★★★★ — Beatrice Allen, July 2017**

> Beyond Design has completed two large projects on the interior of my home. Kathy is a professional and made the design happen. Our consultations made the areas pop with style, architectural detail, and a finished and up to date look. My fireplace was completely rebuilt and the mantle was custom made. We loved her staff who are so polite and hard working. They left the rooms clean at the end of the day. The jobs were completed on time and with minimal disruption for me. I know you will be satisfied with your results.

**★★★★★ — Lucy Green, June 2017**

> Kathy Tufts led a team of contractors in remodeling our bathroom and painting our bedroom. She guided us through the decisions, working within our budget and affirming our choices, while giving expert design advice where we needed it. She and all of the contractors were prompt, professional and thoughtful. Kathy has vast knowledge and expertise in decorating, and remodeling. The quality of the work is excellent. We could not be more pleased with the outcome of this project.

**★★★★★ — MARK GREEN, June 2017**

> Very professional from the start. Worked with us to scope the project within our budget and then worked with us through the project to deliver a beautiful result. We will definitely call for future projects.

**★★★★★ — Sharon Ferrier, June 2017**

> Kathy is awesome! She is very responsive and gives great advise - I love working with her. The project was not easy and there was little time to get everything done! She got everything taken care of and made it seem a breeze, even though it was a lot of work!
> Thanks Kathy!

**★★★★★ — Granite Center, June 2017**

> Always does excellent work! She is so talented and professional. I would highly recommend Beyond Design to anyone planning on remodeling their kitchen, bathroom, or basement.

Appliances were pre-existing so we integrated them into the overall look to blend with the cabinets. The new island, granite countertops, newly refinished wood floors, and an updated paint color transformed this space to a more functional and attractive space.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Metal wall HELP** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We put up corrugated metal in our bathroom; any suggestions on how to make the light switch and outlets look nice and like they belong?

A: Christina, Gosh, please accept my sincerest apologies if what I wrote seemed hurtful. I was trying to offer ideas. I'm a contractor as well as a designer. I tend to air towards the conservative when it comes to installations with a heavy slant towards nice design.
I mentioned the moisture in case it would help. It was beyond scope and unsolicited, albeit meant to be helpful. I'm sorry it didn't read as such. I truly wanted to help you get the best results possible with your project. I think what you've done is great!

**Q: question about colors** *(in Photo Questions)*

I like the cabinet colors. What is it called? Thanks!

A: Hi! The cabinet color is Sherwin Williams \#7020 "black fox". Thank you!

**Q: Did you paint the interiors of the cabinets?** *(in Photo Questions)*

My friend has oak cabinets that look identical to these cabinets. I've encouraged him to paint the cabinets white - at least the frames and doors. What did your clients do, if anything, to the interior? Was it already white or another color? Thanks for your reply

A: Hi, We paint the interior of the doors but not the interior of the cabinet "boxes'.

**Q: Stacked stone** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hello, can you please tell me the name/brand of the stone around the kitchen island and where I can buy it. I am in the process of doing the same concept around my kitchen island and this stone color would be a perfect match. If you want you can email me the information at hono0726@gmail.com.
Thank you

A: The stone is architectural ledge stone "California Gold". You can buy in from The Tile Shop..

**Q: Porch or not to porch?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

hey all... this is the front of my house in new England and I would like opinions or options etc on what to do with my curb appeal... I would like a small front porch or some type of seasonal landscape DC flowers/ hedges/ perennial/ year round color etc ..idk?!!!?

please give me your thoughts!!! thanks
this a picture from the street..

A: Hi,
A porch would be great across the front but keep in mind that adding adding a porch roof will diffuse the light coming into your front rooms. If you don't have them already then you may want to consider adding recessed lighting to help remedy the reduction in natural light.

~ Kathy

**Q: color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

hi, I was wondering what the exact colors you used in the dark blue bedroom was? I appreciate it. thanks.

A: Hi, thank you for your inquiry. The paint color is Sherwin Williams "Naval" \#SW6244 in matte finish.
