We're in IL and they poured the footings in Dec. before the weather got too cold and then continued to build through Dec-Feb. We weren't in a hurry which helped since there was a wait for the vinyl windows until March (winter plan shut down). We "took possession" in April after the final village inspection which was a slam dunk. From that moment on, we've had neighbors coming by to see it and ask about it. They've all recognized the attention to detail, the value of the windows, upgraded spindles, and hefty build character. We just finished staining and now everyone that walks in says they feel like their in a cabin in the north woods. We can't wait to retire and live out there all day long. Wouldn't the open area under the deck lend itself to leaf accumulation? Nesting wildlife? A: The sweep space is the gap between the bottom of the rail and the deck so that the deck can be easily cleaned off. We do not see debris accumulate under the deck when it's left open as in this picture. It does make it easier for animals to get under but if you close if off with solid skirting they will dig under and now it's a cozy home for them.
