**Q: What are the countertops?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Style and material please.

A: Hi Emi.  Thanks for the question.  This countertop is Macuba granite.  It's a versatile granite that goes well with black, brown, gray and white cabinets.   Let me know if you have additional questions and thanks again!

**Q: Bathroom floor remodel going TERRIBLY wrong** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I moved into a newly renovated house 5 years ago and the shower was supposedly done in 2009. the master bath is beautiful and was a real selling point, there is a walk-in shower and it is done in a tasteful contemporary style.

Problem: tiles along the large glass screen and the entry to the shower all cracked, with the tiles next to them cracking as well. 

Solution: i had a contractor come and inspect the flooring and give me an estimate for new bathroom floor tile and new shower floor tile. He recommended that I just do the bathroom floor and leave the shower since it would be an expensive undertaking to demo and put in a new liner and then re-tile. so the decision was made to replace the tile in the bathroom only and leave the shower. he inspected the tile, and the basement below and there were no signs of water damage.

Catastrophe: (well maybe that's a little dramatic) but anyways, when the tile company came and did demo on my bathroom floor, guess what they found? extensive water damage of the subfloor all along the shower tiles. (pictures attached) now im stuck on what to do next, the tile people dont replace subflooring and their part is on hold effectively. I have no clue about this stuff and any opinions are welcome.

A: Hire a good home inspector.  The inspector is a non-biased third party who can tell you the extent of the damage and what needs to be replaced/repaired for a couple hundred dollars.

**Q: Where did you get the doors** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thanks for asking, Kim.  These solid mahogany doors were custom built for me by a shop in Savannah, Georgia - Brannen Millworks.  Because the project is in a coastal flood plain, the door unit had to be engineered, and then built, to withstand high winds, water intrusion, and debris impact.  And yet they are beautiful thanks to the design and to the mahogany selection. There are several local shops near here that can deliver a similar product, as well as a South American company that has provided some truly beautiful doors and windows for me on other projects.

**Q: Do You Prefer Wallpaper or Paint?** *(in Polls)*

Wallpaper has great texture, style and pizzazz but can it compete with the versatile and smooth aspects of paint? We want your opinion!or

A: Both!  They have great new wallpapers that are removable and reusable...not like the papers they had years ago.  Miranda Harris - hope you are living in a cabbage-free home now. :)

**Q: What colour to paint entire interior** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What color to paint. Our entire house is painted one color...yes walls, doors, trim and casings. It is a mustard beige and we are tired of it. We have a fairly dark house and want to lighten...will re-do all trim in white. Looking at Revere Pewter or Stone Hearth BenMooreCC-490. Any suggestions are welcome. Want to stay on the warm tones.

**Q: Can you tell me the size & brand of these windows? What style is it?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Isn't a 2x2 window less busy than a 3x3?

A: Hello, and thanks for your interest.  These windows are 32" wide and 60" tall, sized and placed so that the countertop takes the place of the wood window sill.  We used Pella windows and doors on this project.

As to your other question, I think you're asking why a triple window unit instead of a double?  In this case, 2 reasons - to let maximum light into the kitchen, and to balance the symmetry and proportions of the front elevation.  Another wrinkle is that, with two windows the vertical divider would block the line of sight of the person working at the sink.

An interesting thing about custom homes is that every situation is different, and there is opportunity to arrange the design elements to match the individual's needs and goals - start with your own rules, and then see how the house design/shape/form follows.
