**★★★★★ — James Rawley, July 2026**

> The team of John and Laura provided first-rate service in designing a master plan for the front, back and sides of our large garden at our historic home in Troy, where extensive work is required.
>
> Their services included a careful review of a questionnaire that I filled out prior to their first visit, during which they held detailed discussions with me and spent at least three hours inspecting our property, taking measurements and photos etc. This served as a basis for a first draft of the master plan and a second visit, during which we again held detailed discussions and they spent considerable time in the garden. The final plan has taken into account our detailed discussions and is accompanied by a number of supporting documents including: a list of suggested trees, shrubs and perennials (Latin and common) with numbers and sizes (very useful for calling or visiting nurseries); color photos of trees, plants and perennials; a list of suggested nurseries and garden suppliers etc. They also clearly marked (with white flags) the location of key trees and shrubs. In addition, John and Laura went beyond the scope of our contract by, for example, identifying and proposing remedies for dealing with highly destructive invasive species, and recommending a first-rate arborist.
>
> While this process takes about two months and requires a modest financial investment, the end result is an exceptionally helpful plan and supporting documents that will no doubt save me much time and money, and result in my selection of a much more appropriate mix of trees, shrubs and perennials (including a high percentage of native species) than would be the case if I had adopted a "do it myself" approach.
>
> In short, I highly recommend the Land Design Inc. team of John and Laura.

## Selected projects

- [Permeable Patio Design Albany NY](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/permeable-patio-design-albany-ny-pj-vj~5583876)
  - Location: Albany, NY
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: This small yard in Albany NY was plagued by drainage issues. The permeable patio was designed with a over sized drainage base which captures both surface and in ground water where it infiltrates naturally. An overflow pipe system moves water to the street drainage if needed. The patio is exactly the same in appearance as a conventional paver patio except for the special drainage stone in the paver joints. Walls define the space are lit by undercap LED lighting. The walls also act as overflow sea…
- [Naturalistic landscape design renovation in Schenectady County, NY](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/naturalistic-landscape-design-renovation-in-schenectady-county-ny-pj-vj~2949826)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: It was very interesting to see a photo of this landscape when it was first planted; it seemed fine and in scale to the small cedar home. However the shrubs grew to their normal maturity and, 6 years later, it was a jungle. We identified the shrubs and perennials to keep and removed the rest. The "dwarf" Little King river birch was limbed up and thinned so we can see its beautiful bark and have native groundcovers at its feet. Low maintenance perennials and native grasses were added and compost,…

  - Location: Albany, NY
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: This simple low maintenance raised bed garden is approximately 16 ' by 16 '. Non pressure treated timbers were used and a simple automatic soaker hose system keeps the garden perfectly watered. An uneven yard is compensated for by a raised center area allowing easy access to beds. Constructed by Land Design, Inc. / LandscapeConsultation.com

  - Description: This project in Slingerlands, Albany County, New York focused on taking unusable peripheral yard areas and turning them into an insect and wildlife sanctuary. Dozens of native perennials and grasses create a native plant community as it would occur in Nature. Redbud and Serviceberry Trees provide future bird roosts as the planting matures and develops.

**Q: I love this veggie garden!** *(in Photo Questions)*

About how wide is this gate? I love it, and would like to build something like this for my garden. Is this 3' or 4' wide? I would guess with the arch trellis above that it is more then 36" wide.

A: Gate is approximately 4 ' wide and was custom built for arbor.

**Q: Beautiful! Are the posts held in place with cement? Thanks** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The post holes were filled with gravel for drainage and a minimal concrete support topping used for stability.
