> I met Ken professionally several years ago while he was working on a project. We hit it off immediately and have become colleagues who collaborate on design projects. He is great to work with or to just bounce ideas off of. Ken is a true professional with an impeccable eye for design. He has the ability to see the entire design project and takes each of his clients' wants and needs very seriously.

> I cannot say enough good things about Ken at Chroma! I posted a very complicated paint dilemma on Houzz discussions and expected some very high level feedback from maybe a few folks. . My challenge is to find a third white for the walls to go with the existing two whites already in place on my cabinets and ceiling/trim. Ken took the time to research the colors I have currently, their light reflective value, etc... and thoughtfully and methodically chose a third that would go well in my environment. He certainly went well above and beyond what I expected to receive on this forum. I can only imagine the time and consideration he shows to those who have engaged his services. I wish I was located on the East coast I would not only use his services I would recommend all my friends. Thank you Ken.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Proper way to hang Valance** *(in Windows)*

What’s the proper was to hang a valance at the top of this window in the kitchen between cabinets? Will have horizontal blinds it covers. Tile backsplash runs up to the top of the cabinets. Window width is 35” including the 1/4 round that acts as the trim. About 4.5” on either side to the cabinets. Should the valance span to the cabinets or is that too far outside the edge of the window? Keep it about 2” outside the window trim? I’m having a difficult time finding the “proper” way to set that up given my seemingly abnormal setup.

A: Justin wrote: "The wife wants a valance to cover the top of the blind and she likes the faux Roman shade valance style. I’ve lost the battle of valance or no valance, so I just need the professional opinion of how far outside the edges of the window to mount the valance for coverage. cabinet to cabinet, or a certain nominal dimension outside the window?"

Your answer is- the returns (sides diving back into the wall) should be immediately outside the width of the window (or its trim if there is trim.) If you inspect your example picture you showed above, you will see the same thing. Your cabinets do not factor into this decision.

**Q: curtain wands for sheers?** *(in Home Decorating)*

hi all. I put up a double curtain rod so I could add sheers. Omgosh...I love my first sheers! But the daily opening and closing worries me ill get them dirty in no time. Can I attach these things called curtain wands to sheers?

A: So these are rod pocket sheers. Those can be fussy to move as they have the most friction and can bunch when openning. The weight of a wand attached on a sheer will pull and potentially tear. Try stiching an anchor piece to the backside of the sheer at the inside edge. Think creatively as to what may work. I'm brainstorming but try a piece of laminated cardboard with a hole punched in it to receive the wand clip.

**Q: Windows in a Closet?** *(in Windows)*

We are building a home and my closet will be bigger than any I have ever had by far. I really want it to feel nice and I am not the kind of person who has 200 pairs of shoes (but I love being organized)
I was planning to have three 2' x 2' windows and they have to be at a height of 6' off the ground (with the top being 8' high). I love windows and the natural light they let in. We are next to very tall trees so I don't have to worry about sunlight and fading clothes. Will I regret losing this much high wall space in the closet? I appreciate any advice that you have! Thanks!

(By the way, the placement of different types of storage on this layout was done by our architect but this may all change.)

A: Will these windows be appropriate for the exterior elevation? Will they add to the appearance of your home? If these windows were eliminated, would your exterior now have an imbalance or break in the rhythm exterior detailing?
The light would be wonderful, but there are other considerations.
BTW- I'm all for it, if it makes sense. All my closets have windows and they look fantastic.

**Q: Help! Where to start and end my kitchen tile backsplash?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are down to the finishing touches on our kitchen, and I'm a little torn about where to start and stop the backsplash on my sink window wall. I'm attaching photos of the backsplash tile (Petraslate Silver Sands Mosaic with Glass) as well as a couple of photos of the wall in question. Our countertop is Pental Quartz in Stormy Sky. My contractor thinks we should have the vertical line of backsplash end even with the edge of the upper cabinets (sort of leaving a frame of wall, which we would paint, all around the kitchen window.) The tile guy thinks we should extend the backsplash horizontally from the bottom of the wall cabinets to the edge of the window, leaving only the upper two-thirds of the window with drywall around it. We could also tile the entire wall, completely surrounding the window with backsplash tile. I'm having trouble visualizing the various options. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

A: Your tile man is correct!

**Q: Help with windows for house - Muntins or not?** *(in Polls)*

I have searched this forum up and down and looked at as many home examples I can find and am still really torn. I think I like the look of the 2 over 2 from the outside but from the inside we have 360 degree mountain and some wooded views. The house is an addition and remodel to an updated farmhouse/open concept on 30 acres in Vermont. I appreciate your input. I have included 4 photos of the elevations.

A: Two over two is an historically accurate farmhouse window. It also looks excellent with your exterior elevation.
These muntins will not disrupt your view. If I thought it was an issue, I'd have said something when I replied to your other recent window thread.
BTW, these elevations do not show the 16' four section sliding glass doors. Did you change the doors or is that wall just not shown?

**Q: Window positioning/sizing help** *(in Windows)*

Thanks to this forum there have been some modifications to our initial plans laid out by the architect - and we're really excited about them. I was hoping to get a few comments about window positioning and sizing. Again, this is an open concept farmhouse addition in the mountains of Vermont with commanding East views. I have attached a few of my 3D renderings and the current floor plan. Right now the center slider is a 16' Marvin. The 4 windows in the living area are 3'2x6'4 double hungs, the two over the sink are 2'6x4'8. Thanks for your thoughts and time.

A: For these windows, your ceiling height should be at minimum 108". And it likely is. The LR room positioning is excellent. I like their spacing and rhythm, and the fact they are all the same size. The height and width proportions are very good, especially for farmhouse inspiration.
I also like the kitchen placement, as well as the size. What you have, seems to be the best compromise in keeping the same scale and rhythm established by the LR. One of those compromises is having a mull directly in view of the sink, and there is no one window solution which will provide that overall width.
So, well done. Please consider a floor outlet placed under the intended location of the sofa. A console table with a lamp behind the sofa would be great and the reason for needed that outlet.
