Turnbull Griffin Haesloop is an award-winning architecture firm founded in 1997 by Eric Haesloop FAIA and Mary Griffin FAIA to continue William Turnbull Jr.’s commitment to designing buildings of enduring architectural value grounded in each project’s unique landscape. Today the Berkeley, California studio is led by Eric Haesloop and focuses on the design of sustainable, site sensitive houses and consults on larger scale projects.

The architecture of Turnbull Griffin Haesloop is inspired by the specific characteristics of each site and each client. In the site design phase, we attend to topography, microclimate, solar orientation, vegetation, water resources, and fire resilience. Green building principles guide us, and we choose building materials that complement their settings. Often indoor/outdoor relationships are the genesis of TGH designs. The built projects reflect our concern with daylighting, details, and the craft of building. We carefully listen to the aspirations and requirements of our clients and respond to the site where we will be building to develop a design that enhances both the landscape and the lives of those who inhabit it.

**★★★★★ — Quantum Windows & Doors, Dec. 2014**

> There is no greater accomplishment for a window & door manufacturer than to be specified by an architect. When the architect firm is Turnbull Griffin Haesloop, however, the honor is even greater. Quantum recently had the pleasure of hand crafting product for a highly custom and unique project designed by TGH. We can't wait to see the finished photography!

  - Location: Not specified

  - Description: The site, a meadow dotted with magnificent oaks, gently slopes down to a spring fed pond creating an unusually lush landscape. The owners requested that the house be designed for outdoor/indoor summer living. They wanted guests to have easy access to the pool and pond beyond. The design frames the verdant oak meadow and pond within the larger landscape. A thin floating roof reaches across the primary outdoor living space to frame the entry and create a dramatic threshold from the car court to th…
- [Cloverdale Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/cloverdale-residence-pj-vj~1639568)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: The site is a vineyard located above Cloverdale on a steep south slope overlooking the valley below. Stands of mature oaks and rock outcroppings frame the existing pool and house site. A 1970s kit log home with few connections to the land or views occupied the ideal location above the pool. Our strategy was to utilize all of the existing site improvements and reuse the wood from the existing kit log structure to build a new house that would open out to the land and take advantage of the expansiv…

Hupomone Ranch is an original 160-acre homestead located in the Chileno Valley, just three miles west of downtown Petaluma. - [Stinson Beach Lagoon Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/stinson-beach-lagoon-residence-pj-vj~2049572)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: Located in Stinson Beach, the site offers a southern exposure to the Seadrift Lagoon and a view to the north of the Bolinas Lagoon. This house creates an indoor / outdoor retreat to share with extended family and friends. The house forms a courtyard to the south that captures the sun and blocks the wind. The courtyard also creates privacy for the outdoor deck, fire pit, and hot tub. The living spaces open out to the courtyard while an interior dining bay tips up to capture views of the of the Bo…
- [Coyote Camp Sonoma](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/coyote-camp-sonoma-pj-vj~2049595)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: Located on a remote site in Sonoma County, this 640 square foot cabin was designed to appear as a barn when the sliding wooden doors are closed. When the doors slide open, the house opens up to both sides of the site. The one room house is divided by casework screens that shield the kitchen on one side and a bed inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s bed at Monticello on the other. The house’s exterior cladding is redwood milled from a reclaimed water tank. The roof is rusted steel. The interior walls a…
- [Mill Valley Guesthouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mill-valley-guesthouse-pj-vj~2049604)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Sited in an existing small level clearing at the top of a steeply sloping Mill Valley lot surrounded by mature cedar and redwood trees, this 640 square foot guest house is designed to serve multiple generations and functions: a guest room for visiting parents and friends, a media room, and a hangout space for teenage children. The porch and media room are situated on the more open side of the site and the guest room is tucked into the trees. The flat roof punctuated by round skylights extends th…
- [Elmwood Cottage](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/elmwood-cottage-pj-vj~1369838)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: Located in a densely developed older neighborhood near the U.C. Berkeley campus with transit lines and a small commercial district, the project seeks to provide much needed car-free rental housing. The new 432 square foot accessory dwelling unit is an infill project sited to reshape and enhance an existing backyard, providing privacy while protecting views for both the new cottage and the existing main house. The 50’ by 140’ site was developed in 1908 and as is typical with older lots, the exist…
- [Knights Valley Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/knights-valley-residence-pj-vj~2052383)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: This house was inspired by Charles Keeler’s definition of California architecture as "landscape design with occasional rooms in case of rain." Built by William Turnbull and Mary Griffin as their own family retreat in Sonoma County, the building is an exploration of how minimally they could impact the site. The house, only 640 square feet, is deceptively simple and combines architecture and landscape to make large rooms out-of-doors. The house and well buildings are sited on a bench, the only fla…
- [Sausalito Hillside Remodel](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/sausalito-hillside-remodel-pj-vj~605163)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: Turnbull Griffin Haesloop transformed this two-unit 1940s ranch-style building into a serene, single-family retreat that captures sweeping views of San Francisco Bay. Perched on a steeply sloping hillside in Sausalito, the house is nearly invisible from the street. We replaced the original aggregation of roof shapes on the upper level with a simple, light-filled building volume. A cascading series of garden terraces creates an inviting entry sequence along the north side, allowing the original f…
- [Kentfield Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/kentfield-residence-pj-vj~616747)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: The house is sited to engage the undulating hillside and capture the spectacular views of Mount Tamalpais and the San Francisco Bay. A curved retaining wall follows the contours of the hillside and anchors the house to the steep site. The house is tucked under the living roof, which visually merges the house with the land. Growing out of the hillside, the roof is carved away to form a protected courtyard for the pool. Three volumes housing the living room, kitchen-dining area, and master bedroom…
- [Atherton Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/atherton-residence-pj-vj~915)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Located on the peninsula south of San Francisco, this house sits on an internal suburban flag lot. The previous 1950s house, removed due to structural problems, featured mature landscaping and a manmade pond that the clients wanted to preserve. They wanted their new house to be a private retreat that maximizes the drama of the pond and takes advantage of the privacy of the site. The design solution breaks the program into four buildings – main house, study, pool house and garage – that ring the…
- [Sebastopol Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/sebastopol-residence-pj-vj~616831)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Designed for two graphic designers, this house bridges between two stands of redwood trees, with the northern window wall facing out to the expansive view. Decks located at either end of the house open onto paths that lead to the pool on one side and the studio/garage on the other. The southern elevation screens the interior from the driveway and road above, but allows southern light in through the clerestory windows. As you enter, a dormer rises up over the dining area to frame the view. The ma…
- [West Marin Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-marin-residence-pj-vj~357501)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Nestled on a knoll top within an expansive West Marin ranch, this compound creates a gathering place for an extended family. The cluster of buildings shapes a courtyard that frames a view back to Mount Tamalpais. The courtyard shields the strong winds and creates a warm sunny spot for the plunge pool and hot tub. Inside the main house, a large living /dining /kitchen space allows sixteen people to gather. Bedrooms and bunkrooms let them sleep over. The house is filled with inviting spots to read…
- [Sea Ranch Residence 1](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/sea-ranch-residence-1-pj-vj~914)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: The site for this small Sea Ranch house is edged with mature evergreen trees and opens to a meadow with views out to the Pacific Ocean. The clients wanted an understated, flowing house that captured their love of Japanese simplicity. Our solution starts with a vernacular barn form and carves away to shape an exterior octagonal deck that opens to the meadow and the view. A continuous band of windows and doors follow the outline of the cutout to capture the panoramic views. Cedar ceilings and shee…
- [Sea Ranch Residence 2](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/sea-ranch-residence-2-pj-vj~921)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 4
  - Description: Located at the southern end of The Sea Ranch on a narrow lot with adjacent neighbors, the master bedroom structure was pulled apart from the main house and linked with a deck to frame the ocean view and let the landscape and exterior living space take center stage on the site. We set the main house back from the oceanfront and tucked the master bedroom building behind a mature cypress grove. By organizing the program into distinct structures sited in relation to the stand of trees along the edge…
- [Lake Tahoe Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lake-tahoe-residence-pj-vj~616859)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Located on the eastern side of Lake Tahoe, this residence was designed as a gathering place for an extended family of four adult sisters and their parents. The family once shared a unique lakefront compound designed by William Wurster and they wanted the new house to recall their fond summer memories and incorporate their knowledge of the Tahoe microclimate. Sited on the footprint of a 1950s house and garage, the main house and guest house nestle in among existing pine and fir trees and form a w…
- [Stinson Beach Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/stinson-beach-residence-pj-vj~920)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: This beach house replaces a beloved William Wurster house that burned down on the site. The client requested we design the new house to capture the spirit of the original house while meeting all the current seismic codes and FEMA requirements for houses in high risk coastal zones, which included raising the floor level of the house. We shaped the building volumes of the new house to create a variety of wind-sheltered outdoor spaces that take full advantage of the views to both the Pacific Ocean…
- [Colorado Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/colorado-residence-pj-vj~923)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: The site for this house is part of a working ranch, set on a spectacular plateau at eight thousand feet, with stands of aspen and distant views to Steamboat Springs. The project is divided into three small buildings, each sited to tuck into the edge of the aspen grove and form a loosely arranged compound. The clients requested modestly sized living spaces for both philosophical and practical reasons: they wanted to use each space on a daily basis and minimize energy consumption. Large roofs, sca…
- [Napa Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/napa-residence-pj-vj~916)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Sited on a knoll above Napa Valley and surrounded by vineyards, the house frames and captures the spectacular views of Mt. Veeder to the north and Mt. Diablo to the south while maintaing the sense of the knoll. The house pulls apart, allowing the hill to flow through, and a delicate entry hall bridges the two wings. Each wing of the house adapts its form to the contours of the hill, diminishing the apparent volume of the structure. A lavender-edged path leads down to a pool.
- [Napa Residence 2](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/napa-residence-2-pj-vj~919)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 4
  - Description: Located in the hills above Napa Valley, this 2,500 square foot house perches on a steeply sloped site surrounded by oak trees with views to the valley beyond. The tall uphill façade of the house and the adjacent bermed garages form an entry courtyard to the residence. Beyond the mostly solid courtyard wall, the house unfolds and projects out over the slope: the roof plane fans open to follow the crenellations of a window wall that fills the interior spaces with daylight and steps outward to fram…
