Workshop11 is Stephen Shum's latest creative outlet for residential design and construction as well as the fabrication of furniture and hardware. Stephen began producing works in 1992 as a student of Architecture in Boulder, Colorado. Soon after Graduating with a Master's Degree in Architecture, he opened DCWORKS, Inc., a design studio in Denver, Colorado. Here he began applying his Architecture background and Construction knowledge to the design and fabrication of custom furniture and interiors for the surrounding loft buildings.

After Returning to the Washington, D.C. area in 2005, Stephen began working with a local developer and some of the areas leading Architects as both a Designer and Project Manager, constructing Residential and Commercial projects.

Although Workshop11 is a design construct firm, collaborations with other designers and Architects are welcomed. Working as a Collective can be very productive and rewarding, as exemplified in the work on the Pyle Residence designed by William Feeney Architects.

With a small studio, Workshop11 not only has the ability to Design and Construct buildings, but adds the capability of Fabricating many of the custom design elements, that can take those works to 11.

> After living in our 1930 DC home for 10 years, we decided to do a significant remodel to give it a more modern look, including a more open floor plan, a lot more windows and better use of space. Stephen Shum, owner of Workshop11 came highly recommended by a real estate agent we used in the past. After meeting with Stephen and listening to his vision for our house, we knew he was the one. We loved his designs - he's a true artist and crafstman. He started on time, was great to work with throughout and most importantly finished on time. Unlike so many builders, Stephen doesn't cut any corners and delivers a beautifully built and incredibly well crafted home. He delivers excellent value and you get a lot for your money. It's been two years and we love coming home every day to our amazing home. It's everything we could have dreamed of and more. We highly recommend Workshop11

> Stephen Shum renovated our sons small 1929's family home in DC with it's many small dreary rooms. He renovated the Colonial house into a contemporary dwelling, that twinkles at night and invites you into open spaces. Glass folding doors the length of the entire house makes the garden a part of the interiors, giving the house another dimension. New plans are being made presently for an addition. When I approached Stephen about my much smaller renovation, he was not only willing, but enthusiastic about it's possibilities. Stephen has his own workshop and craftsmen on site and every detail is handmade under his supervision by his team of workers. The results are shown here in the following photos.

> Workshop11 to the rescue. We had recently completed a whole house renovation in 2010 with another architect/contractor. Within the first year, we started having problems—not to mention the headaches during construction. The shoddy work completed by both the architect and contractor caused problems that necessitated a redesign and redo of entire exterior—finishes as well as structural work. Workshop11 fixed all problems inherent in the design and construction. They have an eye for quality and attention to detail for both design and construction. We would not hesitate to use them again and look forward to it. They are passionate about what they do and it shows.

> We contracted with Workshop11 President Stephan Shum to replace all our home's windows and install wood clad sliding glass doors made by Jeld-Wen, which he recommended. Unfortunately, every time it rains, we need to place towels to absorb the water in the tracks of the sliding doors and on our wooden floor. There was little to no supervision of his two workers, who installed the doors incorrectly. When informed of the problem, Shum indicated he would be over soon. I am still waiting. The Jeld-Wen inspection report highlighted the problems:
>
> "Per tech report, home owner complaining of air draft at threshold/sill. Tech has determined that there are no signs of sealant applied to sill framing prior to doors being installed, no sill pans installed. Steps 3 & 4 of JW installation instructions are not followed. Homeowner also complaining about gap between sill and finished wood floor. Tech advised Home owner that the installer has the responsibility and is not door related. Recommended contractor return, remove door units and install per JW installation instructions.
>
> I have also emailed you the install instructions.
> Thanks,
> Jill Morris"

> Workshop11 built my current house, I can't imagine working with anyone else. I will be building another personal residence in about a year and will be using them again. Having someone with the knowledge, credentials and artistic talent is extremely rare. I'm very thankful to have found this relationship. The professionalism and talent is consistent throughout the entire team of workshop11. Everyone was a pleasure to deal with.

> I wanted a studio/office built onto my house but I wanted a very contemporary design as well as a 'hands-on' owner/architect. Looking in the major design magagzines I saw all of the 'big-time' architects, but I like the high-end smaller guy. Driving around a neighborhood one day I noticed a house being built that really struck me.......it was pretty amazing and I don't get impressed very easily. I went inside and it was all custom work, with alot of handmade steel work throughout.....and in excellent taste. He happened to have been there....we talked, one thing led to another and I hired him.
> Extremely high quality, extremely high ethics and integrity, if it's done, it's done right. If something needed changing for one reason or another, there was never a negative issue about it.
> He was not inexpensive, as he couldn't be because of the time it takes for his high quality work....but his value was very good. I thought the high price I paid was gotten back by the quality of the room with many custom features. I highly recommend him.

> Working with Workshop11 to build our dream home was a dream come true! Never having done a project of this scale and after hearing horror stories from people who used architects to design houses they couldn't afford to build, we were nervous about such a massive undertaking. Stephen worked collaboratively with us to make sure we designed a home that was modern and also practical for our family. He worked within our project budget, and always came up with creative ways to design something or build something that went beyond our expectations. We quickly learned to trust Stephen and his crew implicitly. And, despite his laid-back demeanor, Stephen is a closet-perfectionist that thinks carefully about how things look and function, and made sure everything was well-designed and well-built. Given Workshop11's ability to do metal design in addition to home design/build, everything in our home is custom and beautiful. After living in the house for almost two years, we still can't believe we get to live in this amazing modern home!
