**Q: Layout/design advice please** *(in Design Dilemma)*

\[My husband and I just bought this split level home from the 1960s. We aren't sure what to do with the family/living room combo to make it more cozy/functional for a young family. As you can see, the current owner's decor is very dated! We would ideally like to incorporate a tv somewhere, but not over fireplac\[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/what-to-do-with-this-room-dsvw-vd~5498888?lt=hl)e. Thanks in advance!

A: Here is a rough floor plan with a furniture scheme that might be able to help you. Not sure what the dimensions of the space is so this is a rough floor plan. I would do a sofa with a side table and a swivel chair facing the wall where the piano is and put the TV and console there. 

Then I would put 2 Poufs on either side of the fireplace that can be pulled around the front when using the fireplace with the kids. 

Where the table is currently I would put 2 chairs and maybe some ottomans depending on the space you have available. Also a round upholstered ottoman might be nice there too! I would use the fireplace and open walls for an assortment of art and some family photos.

**Q: multiple fireplaces** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My daughter wants to update her family room fireplace. The problem is, she has another FP in her living room which was already redone.  Do the two fireplaces need to match?  One is very formal, with a white surround and the one she is redoing will be more rustic with a reclaimed barn wood wall above the fireplace up to a shed ceiling, with a much heavier wood mantle.  Both fireplaces are visible from her kitchen - but opposite sides.  Thoughts?  Thank you in advance.

A: The two fireplaces don't have to match but I would try and make sure they are similar. Maybe consider doing a white wash on the fire place that is more rustic to tie them together.

**Q: how to decorate a long wall** *(in Home Decorating)*

I have a very long wall from my entry way to living room.  I need suggestions what to put in place of the table that is to the right of the tall folding divider.  I have the buffet table centered in the entryway.  Across from the divider is steps that go downstairs.  On the other side of the 3 shelf console is the entry way to the kitchen.

A: Hi Marj,
I think you have a great start to the way you have broken up this wall. I love the divider. I also agree that a slim bench instead of the shelves to the right of the divider would be better to break up all the wood accents. Then I would put a piece of art work with some color above the bench. For the credenza near the front door I would add a mirror above the credenza to make the entry way open up a bit. I would also consider doing a long runner instead of the small entry rug you have there. Maybe add some color to the rug and the art work above the bench. Hope this helps!

**Q: Choosing Curtains for the Living Room!** *(in Home Decorating)*

First, I hope you're all having a relaxing Thursday!

I'm having a really tough time pairing curtains with my living room rug/couch setup.

I have tried solid navy, white, and beige curtains with no luck. I would love a patterned curtain to add interest to the room, but I don't know how to begin mixing patterns! I'm also totally willing to change the pillows on the couches, those are just what came with the set. The couches are cream colored, but have "yellowed" ever so slightly over the years.

A: Hi Emily,
I like the rug you have in that room. It adds some interest and color to the space. I would recommend doing a light blue color with a small subtle pattern. When we design a space we like to balance the room with some solids, small patterns and bold patterns. You have the sofas as your solids so I would like to see you try a small pattern with a color on the curtains to make the rug seem like it is part of the collection.

**Q: Formal living room/parlor design layout help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all!  Just purchased a new home and it has two barely used rooms in the front entry.  One is a small formal seating room / parlor / entry and a formal dining room.  We are going to convert the dining room into an office and add pocket French doors, but I am having trouble with the other space.  Would like it to be clean and have an uncluttered look, but warm and welcoming as well.  Current furniture is from my previous home which also had one of these semi-unusable rooms as well...would like to not spend a fortune on buying all new stuff..but realize some things may be necessary for the new space.  Had a white shag rug in previous space, but unfortunately too large for use here...also just reupholstered the two chairs (massive project for this novice) so would like to use them as well (Trim and tacks haven’t been added yet).  Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A: Hi Jill,
I love the chairs you had redone! They are fun! I would suggest you definitely need a rug here to pull the space together. Maybe a rug that has both the magenta and the navy color or do something very neutral. I don't usually recommend shag rugs for a space unless it is a bedroom or kids play room. This is a sitting area and even though it wont be used much you still want to have a rug that can stand some traffic better than a shag rug. I would also recommend that you do some curtain panels on the window either functional with some tie backs or just some decorative short panels on either side of the window. I would do a small pattern here to balance out the solid sofa and the bold chairs. If you have some space maybe consider doing a piece of artwork above the navy sofa. Lastly, I would try and put some greenery or branches in the vase you have on the floor. I always believe every room should have some plants artificial or not. Hope this helps!

**Q: Fixture feedback** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hello,
I am obsessed with this fixture (pic is off, it's brass) but was wondering if anyone here has it or is familiar with it.
How hard is it to keep clean (bugs and stuff)?
Heard the globes are VERY fragile, is this true and a problem?

A: Hi Jeanne,
We have sold many chandeliers similar to this one to previous customers  of ours and they seem to love it! If you have dust that collects inside the glass you should be able to remove the glass and clean it out. The best way we have found is to use the office keyboard dust cleaner that will blow the dust out. With the chandeliers we sell we haven't had a problem with the globes being fragile so you shouldn't have any problems.
