## Community Q&A

**Q: Will mulch as a backyard attract termites?** *(in Landscape Design)*

I'm planning on using free mulch to cover most of a small backyard. It doesn't rain much here (in Northern California) and I was thinking a 2"-3" depth would keep the mulch from getting too moist and attracting termites. I have a wooden fence and a wooden shed; would making a buffer between the mulch and the wooden structures be enough to keep them safe from termites? I'm not concerned about how mulch looks since the ground right now is just decomposing fake turf with patches of dirt.

A: Most mulch especially colored mulch anymore is treated to repel fungus and insects.

**Q: Curb appeal help** *(in Landscape Design)*

Would love to get some ideas for improving the curb appeal of my brother's new house. The photo with the green grass was photoshopped by the realtor and the other photos show the actual circular driveway going past the front door. Don't like the add-on by the front door that the prior owner did to add a closet at the entrance but it is not in the budget to redo it. Appreciate any advice you may have. Thanks!

A: Redoing the garden beds would make a huge difference. Look into replacing the bushes with maybe a bicolored boxwood such as Golden Euonymus depending on your planting zone. Or at least something a little brighter.
